For a simple finish on a domestic sewing machine, quilt along piecing seams, sew straight or parallel lines, or try a basic free-motion path. There is no established universal fastest method: the time depends on the quilt, machine, design, and your practice. Whichever route you choose, first baste the layers securely and use a setup that your machine supports.

Spread the backing flat, center the batting over it, then smooth the quilt top over the batting. Secure all three layers before they go under the needle; basting helps limit shifting as you sew.
#1 Best Overall
- Use this foot when pivoting, topstitching, or for 1/4" seams.
- Reference markings on the side of the foot for visibility and accuracy.
- Flat bottom ensures that the material will make good contact with the feed dogs.
- Guide on foot makes it easy to obtain a 1/4" seam allowance. Place the edge of the fabric against the guide while you sew.
- This 1/4 inch snap-on foot is compatible with most low shank machines (adapter may be required).
Utah State University Extension describes pin-basting the outer edge about every 2–3 inches and the rest of the quilt about every 6–8 inches. Treat those measurements as that page’s practical guidance, not a universal standard. Curved quilting safety pins can be useful, but suitable pins you already own may work.
- Keep pins out of the needle path and remove them as you approach.
- Test your chosen stitch and handling on a layered scrap first.
- Plan where the quilt will be supported so its bulk does not pull or bunch as you feed it through the machine.
Choose one of three simple quilting paths
1. Stitch in the ditch along existing seams
Use the seams in the pieced top as a route, stitching close to them to keep the quilting plan restrained. This approach gives you existing lines to follow instead of requiring a new all-over design. Try it on a layered scrap first so you can see how your machine handles the seam and adjust your position before quilting the full piece.

- Open toe for decorative stitching: The open toe design allows space for dense decorative stitches to glide easily under the foot, for more consistent stitching
- Manage tricky fabrics such as plaids, knits and slick minky cloth easily with Open Toe Walking Foot with guide bar. This modern twist on the classic walking foot provides a clear view of the stitching area
- Heavy duty construction: engineered for precision and designed for use even with thicker fabric layers
- Widely compatible with popular sewing and quilting machine brands, HONEYSEW open toe walking foot fits on low-shank models of Euro-Pro, Kenmore, White, Necchi, Singer, Brother, Husqvarna Viking, Toyota, Pfaff and more.
2. Sew straight or parallel lines
Straight lines can be planned across the quilt or run parallel to existing seams. A walking foot is a useful option for this kind of guided quilting, but it is not required for every machine or quilter. University of Utah Continuing Education lists one as useful but not required; check your own machine manual to confirm which feet fit and how to install them. Brother’s guidance for the SE1900, for example, applies to that model rather than to every sewing machine.

Decide on a simple line direction and spacing before you start, then follow the plan steadily. This keeps design decisions manageable; it does not establish that straight-line quilting will be faster than the other methods.

3. Try a simple free-motion path
Free-motion quilting lets you guide the quilt in different directions, which can make it easier to draw a simple curve or repeated shape without turning the whole quilt for each line. It takes practice: your hands move the quilt while the machine stitches, so the result depends on coordinating those movements.
Setup is machine-specific. The Brother SE1900 manual instructs users of that model to lower the feed dogs and attach a compatible quilting foot for free-motion work. Other machines may use different controls or requirements, so consult your manual rather than copying those settings. Start with a layered scrap and a basic path before moving to the quilt.

Work at a pace that keeps stitches even
On a pause to reposition the quilt, stop with the needle down, as Utah State University Extension advises. Check the back periodically as well as the front: it can reveal stitch problems that are easy to miss from above. Slow down if your hands cannot guide the quilt smoothly or your stitches become uneven.

Loraine Selman, a 4-H Volunteer Leader in Box Elder County, advises: “You will learn how fast to sew and how fast to move the quilt with your hands. You want to try to create small even stitches.” Practice on a layered scrap is a low-risk way to find a comfortable rhythm before quilting the full sandwich.

Compare the methods by setup and comfort, not a speed ranking
| Method | What guides the stitching | Setup to check | Good fit if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stitch in the ditch | Existing piecing seams | Test how your machine handles the seams | A route based on lines already on the quilt |
| Straight or parallel lines | A planned line direction; a walking foot may help | Confirm foot compatibility in your manual | Guided lines rather than freehand shapes |
| Free-motion quilting | Your hands guide the quilt in different directions | Check the manual for feed-dog controls and a compatible foot | More directional freedom and willingness to practice |
