Fireproof Coating Thickness on Steel: How to Find the Rated Value

Fireproof coating thickness on steel is never a universal number. Match the required rating, member, exposure and exact certified coating system, then measure the installed dry film against that design.

There is no universal fireproof-coating thickness for structural steel. The required dry-film thickness comes from the approved or certified fire-resistance design for the exact coating system, steel member, exposure and fire-resistance period. A general product range, a thickness used on another project or a field measurement cannot substitute for that design.

To determine the value, identify the governing project approval, read the thickness table for the selected system and member, apply the coating within the manufacturer’s certified limits, and inspect the cured coating with the procedure and gauge required by the project documents.

Why one thickness cannot be correct for every steel member

Fire-resistive coatings are tested as complete systems, not as isolated layers of paint. The steel shape, size, exposed sides, fire-resistance rating, primer, substrate preparation, coating formulation and exposure conditions all affect the thermal protection achieved by a given thickness.

UL Solutions explains that recognized designs include tables specifying intumescent and mastic coating thicknesses for different steel shapes and hourly ratings. Those tables are the controlling design information. They are not interchangeable between products, and a value for a column cannot automatically be used on a beam or deck assembly.

The phrase “fireproof paint” is common in everyday searches, but project documents should identify the actual fire-resistive material and rated design. Spray-applied fire-resistive material (SFRM), intumescent fire-resistive coating and mastic fire-resistive coating have different test data and application rules. A calculation or adjustment method intended for SFRM does not establish the thickness of an intumescent coating.

  • Required rating: the period, such as 60 or 90 minutes, and the test or code basis accepted by the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Governing approval: the current listing, certification or engineering design permitted in the project jurisdiction.
  • Exact coating system: product, formulation, compatible primer, reinforcement, topcoat and any required sealers.
  • Steel member: shape, size, weight or section factor, orientation and the number of exposed sides.
  • Assembly and exposure: beam under a floor deck, beam exposed on several sides, column encased or exposed, interior or exterior location, and any moisture or environmental conditioning required by the listing.
  • Installation conditions: substrate condition, temperature, humidity, ventilation, application equipment, drying time and access for inspection.

If any of these are unknown, the thickness is not yet determined. Ask the project’s fire-protection designer, specifier or authority having jurisdiction to resolve the missing design input rather than selecting a value from a generic chart.

Step-by-step method for determining the design thickness

  1. Confirm the rating and jurisdiction. Read the life-safety drawings, specifications and code analysis. Verify the code edition, test standard or listing required by the approving authority and whether the rating applies to the whole assembly or only the steel member.
  2. Identify the certified system. Record the manufacturer’s exact product name and formulation, the current certification or listing number, approved primer and finish coat, substrate restrictions and permitted exposure. Do not treat a similar-sounding product as equivalent.
  3. Classify the steel member and configuration. Match the member shape and size, orientation, exposed perimeter and assembly location to the design. A beam below a slab may have a different table entry from a fully exposed beam; a column may have another entry altogether.
  4. Read the table for the exact rating. Use the row and column that match the member and rating. If the table lists several thicknesses by section factor, use the value for the measured or specified section factor. Do not interpolate, extrapolate or borrow a value from another coating unless the approved design expressly permits it.
  5. Check system prerequisites. Confirm surface preparation, primer compatibility, galvanized-steel permission, reinforcement, minimum and maximum application limits, environmental conditions, drying and curing requirements, and required coverage tolerances.
  6. Document the selection. Put the listing or design reference, member identification, rating, specified thickness, primer and topcoat in the project inspection and submittal records. This creates a traceable basis for later field readings.
  7. Inspect the installed coating. After the coating reaches the condition required by the specification, measure dry-film thickness using the specified procedure and calibrated equipment. Compare the readings with the design value and acceptance rules; do not use the readings to invent a design value.

How to read a fire-resistance design table

A design table is usually organized around the variables that control heat transfer. The headings may use different terminology, so read the definitions in the listing rather than assuming that a familiar term means the same thing in every system.

Table item What to match Why it changes thickness
Fire-resistance period Required minutes, such as 60 or 90 Longer protection generally requires a different listed thickness.
Steel shape and size Beam, column, joist or other listed section and its section factor Steel with more exposed surface relative to its mass heats faster.
Exposure/configuration Under-deck, three-sided, four-sided or other tested arrangement Decks, encasement and exposed sides alter heat flow.
Coating system Exact product, primer, reinforcement and finish Test results apply to the complete certified build-up.
Environment Interior, exterior, wet or conditioned exposure allowed by the listing Moisture and environmental conditioning can affect performance and adhesion.

An Intertek design listing, CC/IF 90-01, illustrates why a generic number is unsafe: its table gives different Firefilm IV thicknesses for under-deck and beam locations and different values for 60- and 90-minute ratings. The example demonstrates the table principle; its values are not a universal recommendation for another project or product.

SFRM, intumescent and mastic systems are not interchangeable

Spray-applied fire-resistive material

SFRM is generally a spray-applied, relatively thick fire-resistive layer. Its design procedures and section-factor calculations belong to the particular listed SFRM system. A generic SFRM thickness-adjustment equation must not be applied to an intumescent or mastic coating. UL Solutions specifically warns that such general SFRM equations do not apply to intumescent or mastic coatings.

Intumescent fire-resistive coating

Intumescent coatings react to heat and expand into an insulating char. The expansion ratio and dry-film requirement are established by the certified system and test assembly. The primer, steel preparation and environmental limits are part of the approval, not optional accessories.

Mastic fire-resistive coating

Mastic systems are also listed by product and assembly. Their appearance and application method may resemble other protective coatings, but the thickness table and inspection rules remain product-specific.

What the broad “typical range” does—and does not—tell you

UL Solutions reports a broad typical application range of 0.03 to 0.50 inches for mastic and intumescent coatings, with the publication page accessed in 2026. UL also reports that these coatings typically expand approximately 15 to 30 times when tested under ASTM E119 or UL 263 conditions.

Published figure How to interpret it What it cannot do
0.03–0.50 inches typical application range Describes a broad product category reported by UL Solutions. It cannot select the required thickness for a particular member or rating.
Approximately 15–30 times expansion Describes typical expansion under the stated fire tests. It cannot replace the certified dry-film table or account for primer, geometry and exposure.

These figures are descriptive ranges, not project requirements. Using the upper or lower end as a default can produce noncompliance, unnecessary cost, excess weight or application problems.

Application conditions that can invalidate an otherwise correct thickness

UL Solutions identifies several compliance points that must be controlled during installation:

  • Surface preparation: remove contaminants and prepare the steel exactly as the system requires. Rust, oil, salts or a weak existing coating can prevent adhesion.
  • Primer compatibility: use only a primer permitted by the certification. A primer that is chemically suitable in general may still be outside the listed assembly.
  • Galvanized steel: galvanization can affect adhesion. Application over galvanized steel must be specifically permitted by the applicable certification, with any required preparation followed.
  • Environment: observe temperature, relative humidity, substrate temperature, ventilation and protection from rain or condensation. Moisture can reduce performance for some intumescent or mastic products.
  • Application method: use the approved spray, roller or other method, along with the specified thinning, mixing, passes and recoat intervals.
  • Drying and curing: allow the listed drying time and protect the coating from damage before it reaches the required condition.
  • Thickness and coverage tolerances: meet the project’s minimum, maximum and local-variation rules. A single high spot does not compensate for an under-thick area.
  • Finished-condition inspection: repair damage, holidays, cracking, delamination or exposed steel in accordance with the system instructions before acceptance.

ASTM E2924-14 covers specification, application and inspection of intumescent coatings, but ASTM states in Section 5.2: “This practice is not intended to replace the manufacturer’s application instructions.” Confirm the current edition and contract requirements before incorporating any standard into a specification.

How to measure applied fireproof coating thickness

Measurement answers a different question from design. Design tells you what thickness the certified system requires; field inspection tells you whether the installed coating matches that requirement.

Prepare the inspection package

AMPP SSPC-PA 2-2022 Appendix 11 guidance for measuring intumescent fireproofing on steel calls for the project specification, product data, application manual, applicable certification, calibration procedure and a probe suitable for the coating and geometry. The text is available through a third-party document host, so verify the current official standard when the contract makes it mandatory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select and calibrate the gauge

Use a dry-film-thickness gauge with a range and probe appropriate for the expected coating thickness, steel shape and access. Calibrate it according to the instrument and project procedure on a suitable reference or test standard before taking acceptance readings. Record calibration checks and any required adjustments.

Take representative readings

Follow the project’s sampling pattern and acceptance criteria. Geometry can affect probe contact and readings, especially at edges, corners, welds and irregular surfaces. Keep the member identification, location, date, gauge, probe and readings together so an inspector can trace a failed area to the application crew and repair record.

Evaluate and correct results

Compare the readings with the specified value and permitted tolerance in the listing or specification. If areas are under thickness, identify the cause—missed passes, overspray loss, substrate profile, premature drying or measurement error—then repair and remeasure using the approved method. Do not simply declare a different design thickness because a field value is inconvenient.

Common mistakes and the correct response

Mistake Why it fails Correct response
Choosing a thickness from a product-class range Typical ranges do not account for member geometry or the tested assembly. Use the exact certified system table.
Applying an SFRM equation to intumescent coating The materials and listed test bases are different. Use the intumescent listing and its thickness table.
Substituting a similar primer Primer chemistry and adhesion are part of the certification. Use a listed primer or obtain written approval through the project process.
Ignoring galvanized steel Adhesion may be reduced and the assembly may not be listed over galvanization. Verify permission and follow the required preparation.
Using a gauge to calculate design thickness A gauge reports installed film; it does not establish fire performance. Determine design thickness first, then measure compliance.
Accepting one convenient reading Local thin areas can remain hidden. Follow the specified sampling plan and repair procedure.

How to compare coating systems for a project

No single system is inherently suitable for every building. Compare candidates against the same decision axes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Certified fire rating for the project’s required period.
  • Thickness table coverage for the actual beam, column or other steel shape and section factor.
  • Permitted primer, topcoat, reinforcement and substrate preparation.
  • Interior, exterior, wet or otherwise conditioned exposure qualification.
  • Application equipment, access, ventilation, curing time and repair requirements.
  • Inspection procedure, gauge compatibility and documented tolerances.
  • Architectural finish, impact resistance, moisture protection and coordination with other trades.

Environmental conditioning can be part of certification, and UL Solutions cautions that moisture may reduce performance for some intumescent and mastic products. A system that works in a dry, conditioned interior should not be assumed suitable for an exposed or damp location.

Inspector and contractor checklist

  • Rating and governing code or approval recorded.
  • Current certification or listing identified.
  • Member shape, size, section factor and exposed sides matched to the table.
  • Exact product formulation and batch documented.
  • Primer, galvanized-steel status and surface preparation verified.
  • Temperature, humidity, ventilation and substrate condition logged.
  • Application method, passes, drying and recoat intervals recorded.
  • Gauge and probe calibrated for the coating and geometry.
  • Readings taken according to the project sampling plan.
  • Repairs, remeasurement and final acceptance documented.

When an exact number cannot be responsibly stated

An exact thickness cannot be determined from the phrase “steel structure” alone. The project jurisdiction, code edition, required rating, member geometry, selected coating and certification were not specified here, and each can change the table value. The safe answer is therefore procedural: obtain the approved design, match the member and rating, apply the certified system and verify the cured film against that specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use 0.03 or 0.50 inches as a default fireproofing thickness?

No. UL Solutions identifies 0.03–0.50 inches as a broad typical application range for mastic and intumescent coatings, not as a project requirement. The certified table for the actual member, rating and system controls.

Does a dry-film-thickness gauge tell me how thick the coating should be?

No. It checks the thickness that was applied. The required value must already come from the approved or certified fire-resistance design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an intumescent coating thickness calculated the same way as SFRM?

No. UL Solutions warns that general SFRM thickness-adjustment equations do not apply to intumescent or mastic coatings. Use the applicable system listing.

Can the same thickness be used on a beam and a column?

Not automatically. Design tables can vary by shape, size, exposed sides and assembly location, so each member must be matched to its own listed table entry.
