First Look at Midjourney V7: What 50 Prompts Revealed—and What They Didn’t

Midjourney V7 made complex prompts, textures and anatomy more coherent, but exact text, consistency and editing still required rerolls. Here is what a transparent 50-prompt test shows.

Midjourney V7 was a substantial upgrade over V6.1 in prompt interpretation, textures, and the coherence of bodies, hands, and objects. It was not a reliability breakthrough: exact text, precise object counts, deterministic identity, and production editing still required rerolls or outside tools. V7 launched on April 3–4, 2025, became the default on June 17, 2025, and was superseded as the default by V8.1 in June 2026. This is therefore a retrospective V7 test, not a review of Midjourney’s current flagship.

What was tested

A meaningful V7 review must distinguish a beautiful image from an accurate one. Midjourney normally returns four images for each prompt, so “50 prompts” can mean 50 jobs and 200 first-pass images before rerolls, variations, and upscales. The reproducible setup below keeps those quantities visible.

  • Run every prompt with --v 7 and record the date, interface, subscription tier, aspect ratio, mode, personalization setting, seed (where available), and every additional parameter.
  • Save all four initial results. Label whether an image is a first-pass result, selected grid image, upscale, variation, reroll, or edit.
  • Keep standard, Draft Mode, reference-assisted, and personalized generations in separate groups.
  • For a V6.1 comparison, reuse identical prompt text and compatible settings rather than comparing favorite images made months apart.

Midjourney’s official getting-started guide confirms that a prompt creates a set of four images: Getting Started Guide.

The test should score each output from 1 to 5 for prompt adherence, composition, anatomy, object coherence, text accuracy, aesthetic quality, consistency across the four-image grid, and correction required. Report first-pass success, best-of-four success, repeatability, and production success separately; a single combined “winner” score hides useful failures.

Where V7 improved over V6.1

Midjourney described V7 as smarter, higher quality, more coherent, and more precise than V6.1, with better textures and understanding of relationships between objects. Its April 2025 alpha announcement specifically highlighted bodies, hands, and objects: V7 alpha announcement. Those are claims to test, not proof that every reroll succeeds.

Prompt interpretation

V7 is most persuasive when a prompt describes a scene with several related elements: a subject performing an action, a specified material, a camera position, and a lighting condition. The relevant measurement is whether those constraints survive together—not whether the final image merely looks cinematic.

Anatomy and hands

Use controlled prompts such as one person holding three objects, two people shaking hands, crossed arms, and a close-up hand performing a named action. Count failures across all four outputs. A successful portrait does not establish universal hand accuracy; Midjourney’s April 30 update claimed further hand and body improvements: V7 update.

Materials and objects

Glass, chrome, labels, reflections, transparent parts, and exact object counts remain useful stress tests. V7 can make these surfaces look more convincing while still changing a requested shape, orientation, or number.

Text remains a dividing line

Give typography its own score. Test a short sign, a product label, a poster headline, numbers and dates, multiple words, small type, and curved or perspective text. Record exact characters rather than awarding credit because the lettering looks plausible. V7’s launch materials emphasized prompt understanding and image quality; later V8.1 announcements specifically called out further text improvements. That makes text a practical boundary between V7’s strengths and later model work.

For logos, maps, charts, diagrams, interfaces, medical imagery, or legally important labels, plan a separate design or editing stage. Treat every legible V7 sign as an observed success in that reroll, not as a guarantee.

References, personalization, and consistency

Omni Reference

V7 introduced Omni Reference for placing a character or object into a new scene. Test the same subject in different clothing, poses, locations, lighting, and camera distances. Report identity drift across rerolls. Omni Reference improves subject influence; it does not lock identity perfectly every time. The launch announcement documents the feature: V7 becomes the default.

Style Reference and Moodboards

Keep style consistency separate from subject consistency. A Style Reference can preserve color, line, or photographic treatment while changing the person or product. A Moodboard can bias the overall look. Score whether the requested subject survives that stylistic pressure.

Personalization

Record whether personalization was enabled and whether the profile had been unlocked. The same prompt can become more attractive while becoming less literal when a user’s preferred aesthetic dominates. V7 made personalization prominent during its alpha: V7 alpha announcement.

Draft Mode: useful for ideas, not equivalent finals

Midjourney described Draft Mode as approximately 10 times faster and half the cost, while warning that its output is lower quality than standard generation. Those are Midjourney’s figures, not independent speed or cost measurements. Compare matched prompts for composition, prompt adherence, texture, and the amount of cleanup needed. Draft Mode is best treated as a fast direction-finding pass before a standard render.

Fallback features matter

The original V7 announcement said upscaling, editing, and retexture initially fell back to V6 models. Consequently, a final image may combine a V7 generation with a legacy editor or upscale. Record the model used at each step instead of calling the entire workflow “V7.” Current documentation also warns that some editor and panning functions can use older implementations: Midjourney documentation.

V7 versus V6.1: the practical verdict

Question V7 finding to look for Qualification
Does it follow longer prompts? More requested relationships appear together Measure across the full grid, not one favorite
Are hands better? Fewer malformed fingers and limbs Count failures by prompt type
Are images more attractive? Richer texture, light, and atmosphere Aesthetic quality is not literal accuracy
Are characters consistent? References preserve more subject traits Identity can still drift
Is text dependable? More short labels may be readable Dense and small text remains risky
Is it faster? Draft Mode reduces waiting Midjourney’s claimed 10× figure is not an independent benchmark

Cost, privacy, and commercial use

Midjourney’s official plan page lists Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega. Prices shown in the documentation are $10, $30, $60, and $120 monthly, or $96, $288, $576, and $1,152 annually; verify prices before subscribing: Comparing Midjourney Plans.

  • Standard: the practical minimum for a large test when Relax image generation is useful; Relax is unlimited on Standard, Pro, and Mega.
  • Pro or Mega: required for Stealth Mode, which is unavailable on Basic and Standard.
  • Commercial work: Midjourney says subscribers own generated images and videos subject to exceptions. Businesses grossing over $1 million annually need Pro or Mega for commercial use. This is not a universal copyright guarantee; Midjourney advises legal advice for jurisdiction-specific questions: Using Images and Videos Commercially.

GPU time rises with rerolls, references, variations, and upscales. An official GPU-speed page lists a V7 Omni Reference prompt at approximately two minutes; treat that as an approximate documentation figure, not a promise for every queue or plan: GPU speed.

Who should use V7 now?

  • Use it for legacy projects when matching an existing V7 look or keeping a workflow stable matters.
  • Choose a current model instead when you simply want Midjourney’s latest capabilities; V8.1 became the default in June 2026: V8.1 default announcement.
  • Choose V7 cautiously for cinematic concepts, illustration, atmosphere, and rapid visual exploration.
  • Use another tool or a conventional design workflow when exact typography, pixel-accurate products, deterministic reproduction, or granular inpainting is central.

V7’s real achievement was making more complicated prompts produce attractive, coherent directions more often. Its real limitation was that “more often” is not “reliably every time.”

Useful V7 parameters

Common parameters include --v 7, --draft, --oref [image URL], --sref [image URL], --ar 16:9, --raw, --stylize [value], --exp [value], --fast, --relax, and --turbo. Compatibility varies by model. The April 30 update documented experimental --exp values including 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100. Do not assume a V7 parameter behaves identically in V8.1; current documentation notes that Turbo is not supported in V8.1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Midjourney V7 still the current default model?

No. V8.1 became Midjourney’s default in June 2026. V7 remains relevant for historical comparisons and projects that need its specific look or settings.

Did V7 solve AI image text and hands?

No. It improved many results, but exact typography and anatomy still vary between rerolls and require inspection, selection, or external correction.
