The first step before tiling a floor is to assess and prepare the substrate—not to spread adhesive. Confirm that the floor is stable, clean, dry, rigid enough for the intended use and tile system, and suitably flat. After any problems are corrected with materials approved for that system, plan the pattern and dry-lay the tiles. Only then should you mix and apply adhesive.

What is the first step to take before tiling a floor?
Start by identifying what is beneath the proposed tile and checking whether it can support the complete installation. The Tile Association’s substrate-preparation guidance describes a suitable base as clean, dry, dimensionally stable and capable of supporting the intended use. Its technical bulletin also calls out rigidity, moisture, cleanliness, flatness and movement-joint assessment as pre-installation checks.
This order matters because tile, adhesive and grout form a relatively rigid surface. If the base moves, carries moisture, sheds dust or varies too much in height, the finished surface can crack, debond, sound hollow or leave lippage between adjacent tiles. A beautiful pattern cannot compensate for an unsuitable base.

Once the floor passes the substrate check—or has been repaired using a compatible system—move to layout. Place tiles without adhesive, adjust reference lines and grout spacing, and make sure the cuts at walls, doorways and transitions are acceptable. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Ceramic Tile FAQ states: “Placing the tiles on the floor before applying the adhesive (so-called dry layout) will help.” Dry layout is therefore an early step, but it follows substrate assessment.
The correct pre-tiling sequence
Use this sequence as a decision path rather than treating it as a shopping list. The exact underlayment, primer, patch, membrane and adhesive depend on the substrate, tile, room and installation instructions.
- Identify the substrate and proposed tile system. Determine what surface the adhesive will contact and whether an underlayment or board is part of the system. Note the tile type, tile size, room location and expected use.
- Inspect the base. Look for movement, damage, moisture, contamination, loose material and unevenness. Check the entire area, including edges, thresholds and transitions.
- Stop for corrective work. Do not cover a cracked, damp, unstable or dirty surface. Select a repair or preparation method specifically approved for that substrate and the intended tile system.
- Read current product instructions. Check the data sheets for the tile, underlayment or board, primer, patching material, membrane and adhesive. Follow their surface, drying, mixing and application requirements.
- Plan the pattern and joints. Decide orientation, starting references, grout width and how the pattern meets walls, cabinets, doorways and other floors.
- Dry-lay the tiles. Place representative rows without adhesive, including spacers and planned cuts. Adjust the layout before anything is bonded.
- Mark reference lines. A chalk line can establish a straight grid for a suitable layout. Other patterns may require different control lines or a full-room layout.
- Apply adhesive only after the preceding checks pass. Mix and spread the selected adhesive exactly as its instructions specify, working within its open time.
Identify the substrate before choosing preparation materials
“The floor” is not a single material. The surface may be a slab, a wood-based assembly, an existing underlayment, a tile backer board or another approved base. Each has different limits for movement, moisture exposure, priming and adhesive compatibility. The first useful question is therefore: What exactly will the tile system be bonded to?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRecord the layers, not just the visible finish
Look at exposed edges, removable trim and transitions where possible. Note whether the visible surface is the structural base or a separate layer. A substrate that appears flat may still have a loose overlay, a weak skim coat or contamination that prevents reliable bonding. If you cannot establish what a layer is or whether it is firmly attached, treat that uncertainty as a reason to seek the system manufacturer’s advice before proceeding.
Match the tile and room to the system
Tile size, tile composition, room location and expected traffic influence adhesive and preparation choices. TCNA advises choosing adhesive for the tile, substrate and location rather than treating one mortar as universal. A floor in a dry room may have different requirements from one exposed to frequent water, and a large-format tile may demand tighter flatness control than a small mosaic.
Use regional guidance appropriately
The cited material includes US TCNA guidance and UK Tile Association guidance. Terminology, building requirements and accepted installation methods can differ by country or project. Use current local requirements and the latest manufacturer instructions for the installation being built. The Tile Association’s 2016 technical bulletin is useful for identifying categories of checks, but its dated standard references should not automatically be treated as the latest edition of any standard.
Inspect the floor: the checks that decide whether you can continue
Perform the inspection before buying preparation products or opening adhesive. A written checklist helps prevent a clean-looking area from concealing a structural or moisture problem.

| Damage | Cracks, broken areas, soft spots, delamination or unsecured edges | Repair or replace affected material before covering it. |
| Moisture and dryness | Visible dampness, recurring moisture, water damage or a surface that has not dried as required | Find and resolve the moisture source; observe the product’s drying requirements. |

These checks are related but not interchangeable. A floor can be clean yet too flexible, or flat yet damp. Passing one test never excuses the others.

What to do when the floor fails a check
Do not hide a defect under tile. The correct remedy depends on the material, the extent of the problem and the selected installation system.
Movement or flex
Movement must be addressed at its source. Tightening an edge or adding a random layer of material may not provide the rigidity the system requires. Follow the underlayment or structural repair instructions for that substrate. If movement remains, postpone tiling.
Cracks, soft areas or delamination
Determine whether the damage is superficial or indicates a failing layer. Remove loose material and repair only with a compatible product whose data sheet permits use beneath the planned tile assembly. A crack-repair product, leveling material or membrane is not automatically suitable for every crack or substrate.

Tile and grout do not make a moisture problem disappear. Identify whether moisture is coming from a leak, the ground, an adjacent room or recently installed material. Let the base reach the dryness required by the selected products, and use a moisture-management system only when its instructions and the project conditions call for it.
Dust, grease or residue
Remove contaminants rather than relying on primer to glue them in place. Cleaning must leave the surface sound and free of residues that interfere with adhesion. If a coating cannot be removed or its composition is unknown, obtain system-specific advice before proceeding.
Unevenness
Tile follows the surface more than many installers expect. High spots can prevent full support; depressions can leave adhesive too thick or create unsupported edges. Use an approved patching or leveling method, and respect its thickness, drying and priming requirements. Do not assume that a generic self-leveling product is appropriate simply because the floor looks uneven.
Primer, underlayment and adhesive: why there is no universal recipe
Priming is conditional, not an automatic first step. The Tile Association advises consulting manufacturers’ data sheets because some surfaces and products require primer while others do not, and the wrong primer can impair rather than improve a bond.
The same principle applies to underlayment, membranes, patching compounds and mortar. Read the instructions for every layer that will touch another layer. Confirm:

Dry-lay the tiles before applying adhesive
Dry layout is the practical bridge between a sound substrate and a successful installation. It lets you see the actual tile dimensions, shade variation, joint width and cut locations before the adhesive removes your ability to adjust them.
Start with the room and the pattern
Measure the usable field, including fixed cabinets, door swings, thresholds and openings. Decide whether the pattern is a straight grid, staggered layout, diagonal arrangement or another design. The best reference point is the one that makes the pattern look intentional in the most visible areas; it is not necessarily the geometric center of the room.

Place enough tiles to expose the consequences
Lay out several rows in both directions, using the spacers that will establish the intended grout width. Include the tiles at walls and transitions. A single tile in the middle cannot reveal whether the final row will be a sliver or whether a doorway will receive an awkward partial tile.
Adjust for cuts and visual balance
Shift the reference lines or rotate the pattern when a small cut would dominate a visible edge. TCNA specifically recommends placing tiles first so the installer can adjust centerlines and grout width to avoid small cuts at walls and transitions. This is a planning adjustment, not permission to ignore required movement joints or to make cuts too narrow for the system.
Mark each decision before removing the dry layout
Once the arrangement works, mark reference lines and note the orientation of directional tiles. Photographing the layout can help when tiles are lifted for adhesive, especially in a multi-room pattern. Keep the dry-laid tiles organized so their intended sequence is not lost.
Using chalk lines as a layout tool
A cited ceramic and porcelain installation guide describes checking the subfloor, finding the room center and snapping chalk lines as one example of establishing a layout. A chalk line is useful for a straight grid because it creates a visible reference that can be checked as rows progress.
It is not a universal rule that every installation must begin at the exact center. A narrow room, an offset doorway, a border, a diagonal pattern or an irregular footprint may call for a different starting reference. Snap lines only after the dry layout shows where the pattern should land, and verify that the lines are square or otherwise match the pattern you selected.

Common first-step mistakes and how to recover
Spreading adhesive over a dirty or damp floor
Why it fails: Contamination and moisture interfere with bonding and curing.
Recovery: Stop, remove the affected adhesive if possible without damaging the base, correct the contamination or moisture source, and follow the product’s instructions for cleaning and drying. If the bond has already failed, remove loose tile and obtain advice for rebuilding the area.
Assuming a flat-looking floor is suitable
Why it fails: Small changes may become severe with larger tiles, tight joints or directional light.

Correct high and low areas with an approved method before returning to layout.
Using a favorite primer or mortar everywhere
Why it fails: Compatibility depends on the substrate, tile and location.
Recovery: Stop and compare the product data sheets. Replace an unsuitable material before covering it, and use only a combination approved for the complete assembly.
Skipping the dry layout
Why it fails: The first visible wall, doorway or transition may receive a distracting sliver cut, and the pattern may drift.

Presuming the room center is always the starting point
Why it fails: Geometric symmetry may place poor cuts at the most noticeable boundaries.
Recovery: Rework the layout around the room’s visual priorities while preserving required joints and transitions.
Bridging a movement joint
Why it fails: The joint exists to accommodate movement; covering it rigidly can transfer that movement into the tile layer.

A practical pre-adhesive checklist
Before opening adhesive, confirm every item that applies:
- I know the substrate and all layers beneath the bonding surface.
- The base is rigid and dimensionally stable for the intended use.
- Cracks, loose areas, damage and movement have been corrected or professionally assessed.
- The surface is clean and free of dust, grease, paint, curing residue and loose material.
- Moisture has been identified and the surface meets the selected products’ dryness requirements.
- Flatness has been checked across the full area, including thresholds and edges.
- Existing and perimeter movement joints have been identified and will be detailed correctly.
- The tile, underlayment, primer, patch, membrane and adhesive instructions agree for this assembly.
- The pattern, grout width, starting references and cut locations have been dry-laid and accepted.
- Reference lines are marked and the tile orientation is recorded.
If any answer is “no” or “I do not know,” the project is still in preparation. Continuing anyway turns an easily corrected planning issue into a bonded installation problem.
When a deeper reference is worthwhile
For a small, straightforward room, current product instructions and applicable local requirements may provide enough information. A more complex project—large-format tile, multiple substrates, wet-area exposure, unusual patterns, extensive transitions or movement concerns—benefits from a comprehensive technical reference. TCNA’s 2026 Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation is described on its official product page as covering product selection, wet-area guidelines, substrate flatness, grout-joint sizes and workmanship standards. It is a reference guide, not a mandatory purchase for every DIY floor.
How to know you are ready to tile
Readiness is not the moment the room looks clean. You are ready when the substrate meets the selected system’s requirements, corrective work has cured as specified, the materials are confirmed as compatible, and the dry layout produces acceptable edges and transitions. At that point, mixing and spreading adhesive is an execution step rather than a gamble.
