For First Sunday of Advent clipart, the clearest image is a circular evergreen wreath with four candles and just the first candle lit. In 2026, the day falls on Sunday, November 29. Use violet and rose candles when making a specifically Catholic image; for a broader Christian audience, avoid presenting one color scheme or candle theme as universal.
What should First Sunday of Advent clipart show?
Build the image around an Advent wreath: a circle of greenery with four candles, one for each Sunday or week of Advent. On the first Sunday, show the first candle lit and the other three unlit. This progressive lighting reflects the season’s movement toward Christmas, rather than depicting all four candles as already burning. The USCCB’s wreath guide describes the four candles as representing the four weeks; Catholic Relief Services describes them as representing the four Sundays.
Keep the mood reflective and expectant. Advent is a season of preparation and anticipation in Catholic guidance, not simply a generic Christmas countdown; the USCCB’s Advent page offers that context. Evergreen branches, a visible flame, and a restrained seasonal setting can communicate the observance without adding text that assumes a particular congregation’s practice.

Which candle colors are appropriate?
Color conventions vary. Catholic guidance commonly shows three violet candles and one rose candle, with the rose candle used on the third Sunday. For a Catholic-specific design for the first Sunday, make the first violet candle the lit one. The USCCB Advent guidance identifies rose for the third Sunday.
Do not label that arrangement as universal. The United Methodist Church’s Advent wreath glossary describes both all-purple practice and the increasingly common rose candle for the third Sunday. If the clipart is intended for a broad Christian audience, use colors only when the intended tradition is clear, or make the candle colors neutral and let the wreath and single flame carry the meaning.

Should the graphic include a date or Scripture?
For a dated 2026 graphic
Use “First Sunday of Advent” with “November 29, 2026.” Catholic Relief Services lists that date, and the Diocese of St. Thomas gives the same date while noting that Advent begins a new liturgical year. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. See CRS’s Advent wreath page and the Diocese of St. Thomas event page.
For reusable clipart
Leave the year and date off the illustration so it can be reused. A separate caption or text layer can add the date for a particular season. This matters because the date changes from year to year; the cited 2026 date should not be carried forward as a permanent date.

For a devotional version
A short Scripture reference or devotional line can suit a church bulletin, worship slide, devotional page, or Advent calendar. Those are examples of possible uses, not evidence that a particular file is licensed for them. Keep religious wording optional when designing for audiences with different traditions.
How can you make the image clear at different sizes?
- Make the wreath silhouette unmistakable: show a complete circular form and distinguish the four candle positions.
- Make the first Sunday readable at a glance: light one candle only; give its flame enough contrast to remain visible when the graphic is reduced.
- Keep extra detail secondary: greenery, a simple background, or a small Scripture reference can support the focal point, but avoid letting decoration obscure the candle count.
- Separate illustration from seasonal copy: an undated wreath can work in more contexts than artwork permanently lettered with a date or a denomination-specific message.
Which design approach fits the audience?
| Approach | Visual choice | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Broad Christian audience | Four-candle wreath, first candle lit; avoid treating a color scheme or candle name as universal. | Reusable artwork for audiences whose local customs may differ. |
| Catholic-specific | Three violet candles and one rose candle; show the first violet candle lit for the first Sunday. | Artwork whose audience and tradition are explicitly Catholic. |
| Year-labeled seasonal graphic | Add “First Sunday of Advent” and the date November 29, 2026. | A graphic made specifically for the 2026 observance. |
| Reusable undated clipart | Keep the wreath illustration free of a year; place any date or devotional text separately. | Artwork intended for reuse in later seasons. |
