Yes—you can adapt modular, velvet-lined jewelry trays to use nearly all of a drawer without ordering a fully custom insert. The documented method uses one spare tray as raw material: separate its velvet-covered cardboard pieces, cut the base and sides to the gap, trim the velvet, and hot-glue the section back together. It works for the thin, heavy-cardboard tray construction described by the project author; it should not be assumed to work on wood, molded plastic, or other insert materials.

Start with the drawer, not the organizer
Measure the drawer’s usable interior before shopping. Record the clear width, front-to-back depth, and height at several points, because runners, hinges, or a drawer front can reduce the space available to an insert. The project documented by Kristi Linauer used an interior measuring 41 5/8 inches wide by 15 inches deep. Her first idea was a grid made from poplar strips, but she chose ready-made trays to avoid building and covering a complete insert from scratch. Read the project account.

- Measure height from the drawer bottom to the lowest obstruction.
- Subtract a small removal clearance; the Brown Safe guideline is a minimum 1/8 inch on the finished exterior dimensions.
- Write the target dimensions on a diagram before buying trays.
How modular trays solve a leftover gap
Search for modular velvet-lined jewelry drawer organizer trays rather than a single fixed-size organizer. The category typically offers several grid sizes that can be combined. In Linauer’s project, each selected set contained four different grid sizes. Four trays fit across the drawer, but a strip of unused space remained. Instead of accepting the gap, she used one additional tray as material for a matching filler section.
The source does not identify the tray brand or model, so the project cannot be reproduced by ordering a named product with certainty. Compare each candidate’s exterior dimensions, tray height, grid openings, and construction. You want a tray whose bottom and side pieces can be separated without destroying the velvet and whose cardboard is thin enough to cut cleanly.
Plan the layout around the jewelry
- Use larger compartments for watches, bangles, or layered necklaces.
- Reserve narrow grids for rings, earrings, and individual pendants.
- Place frequently used pieces near the drawer front.
- Sketch the tray arrangement at full scale, including the remaining gap, before cutting anything.
A perfect width is not useful if the compartments do not match the pieces you own. Count the categories of jewelry first, then select a combination of grid sizes that minimizes wasted compartments as well as wasted drawer space.

What the documented project cost—and what that comparison does not prove
In an April 18, 2025 update, Linauer reported paying $65.88 for two sets of trays and spending about one hour modifying one tray. She compared that with a custom design-tool estimate that had passed $500, saying the adapted trays saved at least $430 for her drawer. Those are her project costs and estimate, not an independently verified current market comparison, and they do not include a universal labor value or shipping assumption.
| Option | Figure in the cited source | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Two sets of modular trays plus modification | $65.88, reported by Linauer in 2025 | One drawer, one purchase, and about one hour of her time; prices may differ now. |
| Custom design estimate for the project drawer | More than $500, reported by Linauer | An estimate from a design tool, not a published industry average. |
| Custom-insert minimum order amount | $500, stated by Brown Safe on a page dated 2017 | A single company’s stated minimum; verify current terms directly. |
| Marketplace made-to-measure example | $375 displayed on an Etsy listing viewed in October 2026 | A volatile listing price, not a quote for the project drawer or layout. |
For your own decision, compare current delivered prices for equivalent outside dimensions. Include the second tray set, shipping, cutting tools, replacement glue, and the value of your time. A custom quote may include a different velvet, thicker substrate, installation, or a layout that uses space more efficiently, so headline prices are not automatically like-for-like.

- A spare modular velvet-lined tray to cut up
- Sharp scissors for trimming velvet
- A razor blade or utility knife for the cardboard
- A hot-glue gun and glue sticks
- A ruler, square, pencil, and measuring tape for marking
- A cutting mat or sacrificial work surface
Keep the original tray pieces and velvet until the fit is complete. Work slowly and test the section in the empty drawer before applying permanent glue. The documented technique is specific to the described cardboard-and-velvet construction; do not force a razor blade through rigid wood, acrylic, metal, or molded plastic using these instructions.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step-by-step: cut one tray to fill the gap
- Mark the required section. Assemble the unmodified trays in the drawer. Measure the remaining opening, then subtract the removal clearance you need. Mark the target width and depth on the spare tray.
- Remove the inner velvet-covered strip. Gently lift the strip around the inside of the tray. The goal is to reuse it without bending the cardboard or pulling the velvet away from its surface. Patience here prevents a visible damaged edge later.
- Separate the sides from the bottom. Work around the joints until the tray sides and base come apart. Keep track of which piece was the front, back, left, and right; their finishes may not be identical after cutting.
- Cut the bottom. Transfer the measured width to the cardboard base and cut with a razor blade in controlled passes. Use a straightedge and a protected work surface. A single aggressive stroke is more likely to wander or crush the edge.
- Dry-fit the long sides and base. Put the cut bottom and long side pieces into the drawer with the other trays. Check that the section sits flat and that the outer edges do not bind on the drawer sides.
- Trim the short sides. Mark each short piece against the actual dry fit, then cut it. Linauer identifies the corners as the trickiest part: small errors compound where two trimmed edges meet, so test each corner before cutting more.
- Trim the velvet. Use scissors to cut the covering neatly along the new cardboard edges. Leave enough material to wrap or meet the side pieces without exposing a ragged edge.
- Reassemble with hot glue. Apply glue to the cut ends and attach them to the side pieces. Hold each joint until it sets, checking that the sides remain square. Avoid bulky glue beads that reduce compartment width.
- Reinstall internal strips. Trim the original internal strips to the new dimensions and glue them back in place. They hide some cut edges and restore the finished appearance of the grid.
- Test the finished section. Place the modified tray beside the others, slide the drawer in and out, and inspect all corners. If it catches, remove only the high spot and retest rather than forcing the drawer.
Getting clean corners and a finished appearance
Measure every short side from the actual assembled position instead of assuming the opposite side is identical. Cardboard thickness, velvet overlap, and a slightly out-of-square tray can change the final length by a few millimeters. Label the pieces as you remove them, and photograph the original arrangement if the tray has several internal dividers.
Cut velvet from the visible side only after the cardboard dimensions are confirmed. Make long, light scissor cuts rather than repeatedly nibbling the edge. If a cut end will be visible, position the original finished edge toward the drawer opening and put the newly cut edge against an adjacent tray or drawer wall. This is an appearance strategy, not a claim that the joint will have factory-level durability.

Modular adaptation versus ordering a custom insert
| Decision factor | Adapted modular trays | Made-to-measure insert |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Requires measuring, arranging, and cutting a spare tray; leave removal clearance. | Designed to the supplied dimensions, with the maker’s clearance requirements. |
| Layout | Limited to the grid sizes available in the tray sets, but sections can be combined. | Compartments can be specified for your jewelry, subject to the maker’s design options. |
| Effort | Hands-on cutting, trimming, dry fitting, and gluing; the project report says about one hour. | Less fabrication work for you, but you must measure accurately and communicate the layout. |
| Finish | Can match existing trays; cut corners and edges require careful finishing. | One coordinated piece may avoid visible seams, depending on the maker. |
| Cost basis | The cited project used $65.88 for two sets; current prices vary. | Quotes vary by dimensions, materials, layout, and seller; marketplace prices change. |
Choose adaptation when the drawer is close to standard tray dimensions, you can tolerate a visible seam, and you are comfortable cutting cardboard. Choose made-to-measure work when the drawer has unusual obstructions, the finish is a prominent design feature, or you do not want to risk damaging a tray. A current marketplace example is a made-to-measure velvet insert listing that displayed $375 in October 2026; availability and price can change, so treat it only as an example of the category. Common failure points and fixes
The assembled trays leave an uneven gap
Recheck the drawer at front and back. If the opening is not parallel, use the narrower measurement for the insert and plan where the visual gap will be least noticeable. Do not assume a nominal drawer width is the usable interior width.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The velvet pulls away during disassembly
Stop pulling and lift a longer section gradually. If the covering has already detached, keep the loose piece flat and trim only after the cardboard is rebuilt; stretching it while gluing can create wrinkles.

The corners do not meet
Dry-fit both short sides with the base and long sides installed. Mark the actual overlap, trim a small amount, and test again. The documented author calls corner fitting the hardest part, so allow extra time rather than trying to correct a large error in one cut.
The drawer binds when closed
Remove the insert and look for glue squeeze-out, a proud velvet fold, or an over-wide edge. Sanding is not appropriate for every velvet-covered cardboard edge; trim the obstruction carefully with scissors or a blade only when the material is the same thin cardboard described in the project.
The layout wastes compartments
Take the jewelry out before final gluing and group pieces by size. Reassign grid sections while they are still loose. Once the internal strips are glued, changing the layout can damage the velvet and cardboard.

Safety and care limits
- Cut away from your hands and use a stable cutting mat.
- Keep the hot-glue nozzle and molten glue away from skin, drawer finishes, and loose velvet fibers.
- Let glue cool fully before loading jewelry.
- Do not claim this method protects fine jewelry from impacts, moisture, or tarnish; the cited sources provide no independent durability or material-safety testing.
- Inspect joints periodically if the drawer is opened frequently. Replace a loose section rather than allowing jewelry to catch on exposed cardboard or glue.
A practical buying and build checklist
- Measure the clear drawer width, depth, and height in several places.
- Apply at least the recommended 1/8-inch exterior clearance for removal.
- Search for modular velvet-lined jewelry drawer organizer trays and record each set’s outside dimensions and grid sizes.
- Arrange the trays on paper or in the empty drawer and measure the leftover opening.
- Buy a spare tray only if its cardboard-and-velvet construction can be separated and cut safely.
- Gather a ruler, square, scissors, razor or utility knife, cutting mat, and hot-glue gun.
- Dry-fit every piece before trimming velvet or applying glue.
- Test the drawer’s movement with the completed insert before adding jewelry.
For a drawer like the documented 41 5/8-by-15-inch example, modular trays can turn an awkward leftover strip into a visually consistent section at far less than the author’s estimated custom price. The meaningful comparison for your home is not the historical $65.88 figure versus a generic “custom” number; it is your current delivered tray cost, your time, the finish you expect, and whether the available grids fit the jewelry you actually own.
