The five-phase model—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test—is a practical scaffold for human-centered problem solving. Use it to learn about people, frame a challenge, explore possible responses, make an idea tangible, and learn from real reactions; it is a flexible loop, not a sequence that every project must follow once.
IDEO describes a related but different seven-phase process, so the two frameworks should not be treated as identical. Its guidance likewise emphasizes that design work is not step-by-step: teams revisit their understanding and choices as they learn.
What are the five phases of design?
The five phases describe complementary activities. Their order can help a team get started, but evidence from any phase may send the work back to an earlier question.

| Phase | Purpose | Typical activity or output |
|---|---|---|
| Empathize | Understand people’s experiences and context | Observe, interview, or spend time in the relevant setting |
| Define | Focus the challenge using what was learned | Synthesize findings into an open, actionable question |
| Ideate | Explore possible responses | Generate alternatives, then identify promising ideas to pursue |
| Prototype | Make an idea tangible so it can be examined | Create a sketch, model, or rough mock-up |
| Test | Learn from people’s reactions to a prototype | Share it, observe, and use the findings to improve or reframe |
How do you use each phase?
Empathize: learn from people and context
Learn directly from the people affected by the challenge through observation, interviews, or immersion. A team’s assumptions are not a substitute for understanding people’s experiences, needs, and circumstances.
Define: frame the challenge
Synthesize what you learned into a focused challenge without prescribing the answer. An open prompt such as “How might we…?” can invite exploration while keeping the team oriented around a need rather than a predetermined solution.
Ideate: generate and prioritize possibilities
Generate a range of ideas before settling on one. Then make choices about which possibilities are most promising to develop or test next. Design work alternates between opening up options and narrowing them; a team cannot pursue every idea at once.
Prototype: make an idea tangible
Create an early, low-commitment representation that helps people react to an idea. A sketch, model, or rough mock-up can be more useful than a polished artifact because it is easier to change and can help answer a specific question.

Test: learn and adapt
Share prototypes with relevant people, observe their reactions, and use what you learn to improve the concept. Testing is not merely a final pass-or-fail gate: it can reveal that an idea needs refinement or that the team should revisit its understanding of people or the challenge.
How can you compare possible design solutions?
When several concepts seem plausible, consider how well each balances desirability, feasibility, and viability. These are perspectives for making a decision, not substitutes for research or testing, and their relative importance can depend on the context.
| Perspective | Question to consider |
|---|---|
| Desirability | Does this address a need that matters to people? |
| Feasibility | Can the organization build or deliver it with its capabilities and technology? |
| Viability | Can it succeed and endure within real-world organizational or economic constraints? |
How can painters apply the five phases?
Painters can use the model to explore a commission, mural, exhibition experience, or visual identity. It can help clarify how people will encounter the work and make creative assumptions easier to examine without replacing the painter’s judgment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Empathize: talk with the client, audience, curator, or community and learn about the setting and how the work will be encountered.
- Define: frame the creative challenge around a meaningful need, leaving room for more than one visual answer.
- Ideate: explore different compositions, palettes, scales, materials, and relationships to the space.
- Prototype: make a sketch, color study, model, or rough mock-up that can help others respond to the direction.
- Test: share the work-in-progress with relevant people, observe and record their reactions, and decide what to revise or investigate next.
Not every project needs every kind of prototype or formal testing session. Choose a low-commitment way to make the idea concrete and learn what matters for the specific project.

Is the five-phase model a linear process?
No. The phases are a starting scaffold, not a requirement to complete each one once in order. A test may change what the team understands about people or the challenge, prompting a return to Empathize or Define; a prototype may lead to new ideas that the team wants to explore.
A useful rhythm is to learn about people, frame a need, generate options, and choose what to make or test next. Repeat when new evidence changes the team’s view. IDEO also cautions that its own process is not a step-by-step method, though its current process uses seven phases rather than this five-phase taxonomy.

What makes a useful prototype?
A useful prototype is tangible enough to help investigate an idea or assumption, but early and low-commitment enough to change. It might be a sketch, model, or rough mock-up rather than a finished product.
How does IDEO’s process relate to the five phases?
IDEO’s current process describes seven phases, so it is related but not the same taxonomy. Both can support human-centered work, and IDEO emphasizes that design is not a rigid step-by-step process.
The Bottom Line
Use Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test as a flexible way to learn and make decisions—not as a guarantee of success or a mandatory checklist. Explore people’s needs, make ideas tangible, and let evidence guide what to do next.
