You can use AI to repair a damaged digital image of a painting or other artwork, but generated pixels are an interpretation—not proof of what was originally there. Keep an untouched source, limit edits to the damaged area, compare generated alternatives, and save the result as a separate, editable derivative.
This guide covers digital image editing, not physical conservation. AI cannot stabilize flaking paint or repair a physical canvas, and the research does not establish how long a typical repair takes.
Choose a workflow for the damage
For a small blemish or damaged section, use a selection-based repair so the tool works only in the area you choose. For changes to the entire image, a whole-image editing feature may be appropriate, but it gives the system a broader scope to alter the composition.

Tool features and availability can change. Adobe’s pages describe Firefly restoration for JPEG, PNG, and WEBP uploads up to 100 MB, and Photoshop’s current instructions distinguish whole-image Prompt to Edit from Generative Fill on a partial selection. Protect the original and make a working copy
- Keep an untouched copy of the source image before editing.
- Open or save a separate working copy. In Photoshop, preserve the source layer and use separate retouching layers, masks, or other editable methods where practical.
- Identify the defect and select only the area that needs repair. Avoid a whole-image edit when the problem is localized.
- Generate a repair, then review the result and any available alternatives before accepting one.
- Inspect the repaired area and its edges alongside nearby texture, color, perspective, and details. Treat this as a careful visual check, not a guarantee of historical accuracy.
- Keep the editable project and export a separate derivative. Label uncertain or generated reconstruction in working files or captions.
Photoshop’s nondestructive editing guidance describes adjustment layers, Smart Objects, masks, and retouching on a separate layer as ways to keep edits flexible and revisable. Exact controls may vary, so consult current application help if you need menu-by-menu instructions.
Repair is not the same as reconstruction
A repair may address a localized visible defect. When substantial painted content is missing, an AI system may generate a plausible completion, but it cannot confirm what was there. Do not present generated pixels as recovered historical truth.

The ReVis case study of the Hunt Frieze at Vergina describes a digital reconstruction assisted by Photoshop Generative Fill. It says the result was assembled from surviving fragments and informed by scientific investigation and art-historical interpretation, and characterizes it as a newly composed image. This is an example of reconstruction as interpretation, not proof that AI recovered the original appearance. See ReVis’s reconstruction case study.
Review the result before sharing
- Does the repaired area fit the neighboring edges, texture, color, and perspective?
- Has the edit changed recognizable details beyond the selected region?
- Is the result clearly identified as an AI-assisted edit or reconstruction when that distinction matters?
- Have you kept the untouched source and editable project so the change can be reviewed or revised?
FAQ
Can AI recover missing parts of a painting exactly?
No. AI can generate a plausible completion, but it cannot prove what missing parts looked like. Treat substantial additions as reconstruction, not recovered evidence.

How do I keep an AI repair from changing the whole artwork?
Work on a copy and select only the damaged region when using a selection-based feature such as Photoshop Generative Fill. Compare the result with the source before accepting it.
Does a repair tool for scratched photographs also reconstruct painted artwork?
Not necessarily. Topaz Labs describes Dust & Scratch as a photo-cleanup model; that product guidance does not establish its suitability for reconstructing painted imagery.

No. This workflow edits a digital image. It does not stabilize or repair the physical artwork.
