The flag of Saudi Arabia is a green rectangle bearing the white Islamic declaration of faith, the Shahada, above an unsheathed sword. Its width is two-thirds of its length, and its design is intended to be legible on both sides. The inscription expresses the declaration’s religious meaning; the sword is part of the official design, though the cited official specifications do not give it a definitive symbolic interpretation.
What is written on the Saudi Arabian flag?
The white inscription is the Shahada, translated on the Saudi flag’s official website as: “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The official flag-law summary identifies the lettering as Thuluth script. It is a declaration of Islamic faith, not decorative text; Saudi government sources identify the Kingdom as an Islamic state.

What does the design look like?
The official specification describes a green rectangular field with the Shahada centered in white and an unsheathed white sword directly beneath it, parallel to the inscription. The sword’s handle points toward the lower part of the flag and sits on the right side. The inscription and sword should be clearly visible on both faces.

What are the flag’s dimensions and proportions?
The flag’s width is two-thirds of its length. For example, a flag 90 centimeters long would be 60 centimeters wide. The same ratio applies at any scale; the specification gives a proportion, not one mandatory physical size.
Why is the sword on the flag?
The sword’s placement and appearance are part of the official design. The cited official specifications establish those details but do not provide a clear, attributable explanation of what the sword symbolizes. It is therefore more accurate to describe its required position than to present a particular symbolic interpretation as settled fact.
