“Flight of Fancy” is the name of several unrelated quilting patterns, not one standard design. Before gathering fabric or cutting pieces, identify the designer or publisher: the named projects range from 12-inch blocks to full quilts with different sizes and materials.

How to choose the right Flight of Fancy
- You want a layer-cake-friendly lap quilt: choose Debbie Maddy’s Calico Carriage pattern. Its listing covers two 60-by-80-inch quilts and specifies 10-inch squares.
- You want a butterfly-panel quilt: choose Northcott’s 42-by-58-inch pattern and use its panel-based fabric requirements.
- You want a single block: choose either the AllPeopleQuilt or Fabric406 tutorial. Both describe a 12-inch block, but they use their own color choices and construction directions.
When buying or downloading a pattern, match the designer or publisher as well as the words “Flight of Fancy.” A finished quilt size, reference image, or link to the pattern can also help confirm that you have the intended version.
What to know before cutting fabric
For the Calico Carriage lap quilts
The Jordan Fabrics listing identifies Debbie Maddy’s design as layer-cake friendly and says makers can purchase pre-cut bundles or cut their own 10-inch squares. Treat that as a fabric format, not a complete supply list: consult the pattern itself for total quantities and any background fabric before cutting.

For the Northcott quilt
Northcott’s separate design is built around a butterfly panel and coordinating fabrics, with borders, backing, and binding. Its stated finished size is 42 by 58 inches. Do not substitute the Calico Carriage layer-cake requirements for this version.
For a 12-inch block
The two block tutorials are separate patterns. AllPeopleQuilt describes five fabric colors and marked diagonal lines for triangle units; its instructions call for a quilter’s pencil to mark those lines. Fabric406 describes square-in-a-square, rectangle snowball, and half-square-triangle units, then shows layout options. Follow the chosen tutorial’s own cutting and color directions rather than combining the two.

How to make a Flight of Fancy quilt
- Identify the source: confirm whether your pattern is from AllPeopleQuilt, Calico Carriage, Fabric406, or Northcott.
- Confirm what it makes: distinguish a 12-inch block from a full quilt; the Calico Carriage and Northcott versions have different finished dimensions.
- Use only that version’s requirements: check its pattern or tutorial for cutting measurements, quantities, and assembly sequence. The Calico Carriage listing supports 10-inch squares, while Northcott specifies a butterfly panel and coordinates.
- Cut and assemble from the matching instructions: for the AllPeopleQuilt block, mark the diagonal lines as directed; for Fabric406, follow its specified unit construction and layout. Do not infer steps or measurements from another pattern with the same name.
