Floating Floorboards Explained: Materials, Underlay, Gaps and Installation Checks

Floating describes how floorboards are installed, not what they are made of. This guide covers product selection, subfloor checks, underlay, moisture barriers, expansion gaps, tools and installation decisions.

Floating floorboards are installed without being nailed or glued to the subfloor. The planks usually lock together, while an underlay supports the floor and separates it from the substrate. “Floating” describes the installation method, not one particular material: laminate commonly uses a floating click system, and engineered wood may be floated or installed with adhesive depending on the product. The exact product guide controls every important detail, including subfloor condition, underlay, moisture protection, expansion gaps and permitted installation areas.

What “floating floorboards” actually means

A floating floor is a floor assembly that rests on the subfloor instead of being mechanically fastened or bonded across its entire area. Individual boards may connect with a click or locking profile, creating one continuous surface that can expand and contract as conditions change. The floor is held in position by its own weight, the interlocked boards, skirting or trim, and the specified perimeter clearances.

The term does not identify a single flooring material. Laminate planks are often designed specifically for floating installation. Engineered wood can also use a floating click method, but some engineered products require or permit glue-down installation instead. Solid wood, parquet, vinyl and other systems have their own rules; never assume that instructions for one product apply to another.

Why the method matters

  • Movement: the floor needs room to respond to seasonal humidity and temperature changes.
  • Sound and feel: the underlay affects acoustic performance, impact feel and minor surface irregularities.
  • Moisture risk: the subfloor and the floor covering may require different moisture controls.
  • Warranty compliance: using an unapproved underlay, adhesive or gap can invalidate product-specific coverage.

There is no universally best installation method. The correct choice depends on the exact board, the substrate, moisture exposure, underfloor heating, room size and the manufacturer’s warranty conditions.

Start with the exact product guide

Before buying boards, underlay or an installation kit, record the product name, collection, thickness and intended installation method. Download the current installation instructions for that exact product and market. Manufacturer documents can differ even when two floors look similar.

  1. Confirm the permitted method. Look for wording such as “floating,” “click floating,” “glue-down” or “mechanical fixing.” If several methods are listed, note which substrates and room conditions apply to each.
  2. List approved substrates. The guide should identify whether the product can go over concrete, plywood, wood boards, existing vinyl or another surface.
  3. Copy the stated tolerances. Record the required flatness, moisture limits, acclimation period, temperature range and expansion dimensions rather than relying on a generic flooring rule.
  4. Check exclusions. Bathrooms, unheated areas, conservatories, commercial spaces, stairs and rooms with underfloor heating may have separate restrictions.
  5. Keep the document on site. Installers need it while checking the subfloor and laying the first rows, not just after a problem appears.

Subfloor checks before installation

All of the manufacturer guidance reviewed starts with a similar principle: the surface must be clean, dry and stable. Some documents also require a firm, structurally sound and flat substrate. The acceptable flatness and moisture values are product-specific, so a single number should not be treated as a universal floating-floor standard.

Stability and structural soundness

  • Walk the entire area and mark movement, soft spots, squeaks, loose panels and cracked or hollow sections.
  • Check that wood-based sheets or boards are securely fixed and that concrete is not crumbling or delaminating.
  • Do not cover a subfloor that flexes under normal foot traffic; a floating finish will not correct a structural defect.

Cleanliness

Remove dust, grit, plaster, paint drips, staples and other debris. A small stone beneath a plank can create a concentrated high spot, clicking sounds or a damaged locking edge. Vacuum after scraping and before rolling out underlay.

Flatness

Use the tolerance in the product guide and a straightedge long enough to reveal dips and ridges. A floor can be structurally sound yet too uneven for a particular locking system. Level or patch only with a compatible material, and allow repairs to cure fully before installation. The reviewed instructions do not provide a universal repair recipe, so persistent or extensive unevenness is a reason to obtain a flooring professional’s assessment.

Dryness and moisture testing

Concrete and wood require different checks. A pin-type moisture meter is identified in Pergo’s LMP summary as a way to measure wood-subfloor moisture. That tool is useful only when used according to the meter and flooring manufacturer’s procedures; its reading is not automatically an acceptance value. Concrete may need a separate test method and a moisture barrier. Record readings in several locations, including edges, doorways and areas near plumbing, and compare them with the exact product limits.

A floor that is damp, subject to recurring leaks or still drying after construction should not be enclosed beneath boards. Find and correct the moisture source first. If the substrate remains outside the specified range, stop rather than hoping an underlay will solve it.

Underlay and vapor barriers: a compatibility decision

Underlay is not an optional universal accessory for a floating floor. The cited Pergo floating-wood and Tarkett laminate guidance requires underlay for the products covered by those instructions. Underlay can provide cushioning, acoustic separation and a controlled interface, but its thickness, compression, thermal resistance and moisture properties must match the flooring.

“For a floating installation it is always necessary to use an underlay.” — Pergo, manufacturer installation guidance.

Choose by both product and subfloor

Situation What to verify Why it matters
Concrete subfloor Whether the product requires a separate vapor or moisture barrier, whether the barrier is integrated into the underlay, and the permitted moisture level Concrete can transmit moisture into boards; an incompatible or duplicated barrier can also create installation problems
Wood-based subfloor Approved underlay type, ventilation or moisture requirements, and the wood moisture limit Wood can move and may need a different moisture strategy from concrete
Existing vinyl or resilient flooring Whether the product allows installation over it and whether a polyethylene layer is prohibited, unnecessary or required Surface composition, adhesion and trapped moisture vary by product
Underfloor heating Maximum floor temperature, thermal resistance and commissioning procedure Excess heat or excessive insulation can damage the floor or reduce heating performance

Shaw’s cited Epic and Epic Extreme HDF instructions illustrate why generalization is risky: for those covered products, 6 mil polyethylene is not required over vinyl, wood or wood-product subfloors, but it is required over concrete. That statement applies to those instructions only, not to every product from that manufacturer or any other brand.

How to install the underlay

  1. Prepare and approve the subfloor first; underlay is not a substitute for leveling or drying.
  2. Roll out the specified product in the direction and layout required by its instructions.
  3. Keep seams tight or overlap them only when the guide says to do so. Tape seams with the specified tape if required.
  4. Do not stack multiple layers unless the flooring manufacturer explicitly permits it.
  5. Trim at walls and penetrations so the material does not buckle beneath the boards.

Expansion gaps: leave room for movement

A floating floor must not be wedged tightly between walls, cabinets, pipes, columns or door frames. Plan a continuous movement gap around the perimeter and at any intermediate break required by the product guide. Cover the gap later with skirting, trim or an approved profile; do not fill it rigidly with adhesive or grout.

The dimension is product-specific. Pergo’s LMP summary (Version 07.2026) gives 1 mm per metre of floor width, with an 8 mm minimum for that system. Eagle’s laminate instructions specify a 1/4-inch perimeter gap and require at least a 1/2-inch gap for areas above 2,500 square feet. These figures must not be blended into one generic rule.

Where installers commonly miss the gap

  • Door jambs and casings, where boards may need to slide underneath after the jamb is undercut.
  • Radiator, water and electrical penetrations, which need collars or other approved finishing details.
  • Kitchen islands, built-in cabinets and fixed partitions. A product may require the floor to stop before a fixed object rather than float beneath it.
  • Long, wide or irregular layouts, where transition profiles or additional breaks may be required.

Use spacers that match the specified dimension, check the gap as rows progress, and remove temporary spacers only when the instructions say. A gap that narrows in the middle of a room can pin the floor and cause peaking or separated joints.

Tools and materials checklist

A basic floating-floor installation kit often includes the following items, but the product guide remains the authority:

  • Spacers sized to the required expansion gap
  • A tapping block designed for the locking profile
  • A pull bar for the final board in a row
  • Fine-tooth saw, jigsaw or approved cutting tool
  • Tape measure, pencil, straightedge and square
  • Vacuum or soft brush for removing grit
  • Moisture-testing equipment appropriate to the subfloor; Pergo’s LMP summary specifically mentions a pin-type meter for wood
  • Safety glasses, hearing protection and suitable dust control

Do not strike a locking edge directly with a hammer. A tapping block spreads the force, while a pull bar closes joints where a block cannot fit. Using an improvised tool can crush the profile and create a defect that appears only after several rows are loaded.

Floating versus glue-down installation

Decision factor Floating click installation Glue-down installation
Connection Boards lock together and rest on underlay Boards are bonded to the prepared subfloor with an approved adhesive
Product eligibility Only products whose instructions permit floating Only products and adhesives whose instructions permit glue-down
Subfloor sensitivity Requires a stable, sufficiently flat surface and correct underlay Requires a clean, dry, compatible surface and adhesive system
Movement planning Perimeter and intermediate expansion details are central Movement provisions still follow the product design, but the assembly behaves differently
Underfloor heating Check thermal resistance and temperature limits Check adhesive compatibility and the manufacturer’s heating procedure
Repair approach Some click systems allow individual boards to be replaced, depending on layout Bonded boards generally require more invasive removal

Tarkett’s cited guidance describes floating installation with interlocking laminate planks and identifies floating click installation as one option for engineered wood, while glue-down may also be available. The correct method is the one authorized for your exact product and site, not the method that seems quickest.

Installation sequence

  1. Acclimate if required. Follow the product’s temperature, humidity, packaging and waiting-time instructions. Do not invent an acclimation period when the guide specifies another procedure.
  2. Plan the layout. Measure the room, account for the required perimeter gap, and avoid ending a row with an impractically narrow piece. Stagger end joints by the minimum distance stated in the guide.
  3. Prepare transitions and doorways. Decide where profiles, trim and door undercuts will go before the first board is locked.
  4. Install the approved underlay. Keep seams and vapor protection to the configuration specified for the subfloor.
  5. Set the first row straight. Use spacers at walls and maintain the planned orientation. A small error here compounds across the room.
  6. Engage each joint as instructed. Some profiles angle down; others require a drop or slide motion. Never force a joint that is not aligned.
  7. Use the tapping block and pull bar correctly. Close joints with controlled pressure and inspect the surface for raised edges.
  8. Maintain movement space. Recheck walls, penetrations and fixed objects as the floor advances.
  9. Fit the final row. Measure at several points because walls are rarely perfectly parallel. Transfer the gap allowance before cutting.
  10. Finish without pinning the floor. Attach skirting or trim to the wall or approved support, not through the floating boards, unless the product guide explicitly directs otherwise.

Common problems and what they indicate

Peaking, tenting or buckling

Look first for a missing or compressed expansion gap, a fixed cabinet trapping the floor, moisture swelling or excessive heat. Remove the cause before replacing boards. Adding weight on top usually hides rather than fixes the movement restriction.

Open joints or clicking sounds

Possible causes include an uneven subfloor, damaged locking profiles, debris beneath a plank, an incorrect installation angle or movement caused by insufficient support. Disassemble only as the product allows; forcing a locked joint backward can break it.

Soft or springy areas

A floating floor can feel resilient, but a distinct soft spot suggests a subfloor dip, inadequate support or an unsuitable underlay. Find the location, remove boards if necessary and correct the substrate according to professional advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Swelling or edge damage

Water intrusion, wet cleaning, high humidity or an unprotected concrete subfloor may be involved. Stop further exposure, document the affected area and check the manufacturer’s repair and warranty procedure. Do not sand or seal laminate edges unless the product specifically permits it.

When to pause and call a professional

  • The subfloor has persistent dampness, leaks, mold, structural movement or crumbling concrete.
  • Measured moisture or flatness falls outside the product’s stated limits.
  • The room includes extensive built-ins, unusual geometry, stairs or multiple transitions.
  • The installation is over underfloor heating and the commissioning requirements are unclear.
  • You cannot identify whether the existing surface is suitable or whether a moisture barrier is allowed.

A professional assessment is especially valuable before covering a damaged or persistently damp substrate. The reviewed manufacturer documents explain installation conditions, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis or repair specification for every building.

Pre-installation decision checklist

  • Have you identified the exact product and downloaded its current installation guide?
  • Does that guide authorize floating installation over your substrate?
  • Is the surface clean, stable, dry and within the stated flatness tolerance?
  • Have you measured moisture using the method and limits the manufacturer specifies?
  • Is the underlay approved for both the product and the subfloor?
  • Is a vapor barrier required, integrated, unnecessary or prohibited in this assembly?
  • Have you calculated the correct expansion gap for this product and room size?
  • Are doorways, pipes, cabinets, columns and transition profiles accounted for?
  • Do you have compatible spacers, a tapping block, a pull bar and safe cutting equipment?
  • Are underfloor-heating limits, room restrictions and warranty conditions documented?

If any answer is unknown, stop at that decision point and obtain the product-specific instruction or qualified advice. Floating floorboards can be straightforward to assemble, but their long-term performance depends on preparation and compatibility more than on the locking motion itself.
