Kristi Linauer’s “Bathroom Makeover Day 17” documents a freehand floral floor cloth made for a bathroom makeover. The cloth began with a smooth-backed vinyl flooring remnant, large simple flowers and leaves, several paint colors, and white mixed in for variation. The 2013 post is a project reveal rather than a complete modern installation manual; its linked 2011 tutorial supplies the construction sequence, while also recording limitations and unanswered questions about primers, cleaning, and movement on the floor.

What Bathroom Makeover Day 17 actually documents

Published March 6, 2013, Linauer’s post shows one decorative floor cloth made for a bathroom. A reader had suggested fabric from Calico Corners as a possible shower-curtain accent, and that fabric became the visual starting point for the floor design. Linauer wanted oversized, bold flowers and leaves instead of a small repeating pattern.

She painted the floral forms freehand. The shapes were intentionally basic rather than botanically detailed, and she used four paint colors plus brown for the stems. White paint was mixed into the colors to change their intensity and, in her words, give the flowers and leaves more life. The result is best understood as a hand-painted accent that coordinates with the room, not as a commercially tested bathroom mat.

The floral post points to Linauer’s earlier article, “How To Make A Hand Painted Floor Cloth,” published April 6, 2011 and updated October 12, 2012. That tutorial explains the cutting, priming, painting, and sealing sequence in greater detail, but its example is striped. The stripe layout should not be mistaken for the exact floral design process.

Why the vinyl remnant mattered

For the floral cloth, Linauer selected a vinyl flooring remnant with a perfectly smooth back. She contrasted it with an earlier remnant whose dimples collected dirt and made cleaning difficult. That observation is one of the most useful practical details in the project: the back texture can affect maintenance even when the decorated face looks suitable.

A remnant is also easy to size for a particular room. In the linked tutorial, Linauer bought a remnant from Home Depot, marked the desired dimensions, and cut it with a utility knife and an L-square. Her account establishes what she used, not a universal rule that every remnant will accept the same primer or finish. Inspect any piece in person or verify its construction before committing to paint.

What to inspect before buying or cutting

  • Look for a back that is smooth rather than deeply dimpled, since Linauer found the dimples trapped dirt.
  • Check that the remnant lies flat enough to measure and cut accurately.
  • Plan the finished dimensions around doors, fixtures, and the path people use to enter the room.
  • Keep the offcut until the finish system has dried; it can serve as a small compatibility test area.

The historical construction sequence

The following steps combine the linked tutorial’s documented method with the floral post’s design choices. They describe what Linauer did for her earlier cloth and how the floral version was framed; they are not a current, independently tested bathroom recipe.

  1. Measure and mark. Decide the cloth’s finished size, then use an L-square and a utility knife to cut the vinyl remnant. A straightedge keeps the corners consistent and reduces ragged cuts.
  2. Prime the back. Linauer applied one coat of latex KILZ primer to the back of the vinyl. The tutorial records a significant drying problem: she wrote, “I found this to be VERY frustrating. This primer never dried to a completely dry finish.” She also reported that the tackiness went away after the paint dried. That is her experience with that project and product combination, not a conclusion about all primers.
  3. Allow the primer to settle. The primer remained tacky for several days in her account. Do not stack, roll, or place the piece in service while the surface is still tacky. The tutorial does not provide a controlled drying time for every climate, vinyl type, or coating.
  4. Map the design. The floral article describes freehand flowers and leaves inspired by the fabric reference. Lightly positioning the major shapes before painting can help distribute large blooms and keep stems from crowding the edges, while preserving the informal hand-drawn quality.
  5. Paint in stages. Linauer used four colors and brown stems, mixing white into the colors to create tonal changes. The linked tutorial describes painting in stages; its published example uses stripes, so translate the staging principle to the floral composition rather than copying stripe measurements.
  6. Add the white variation. White was not merely a background color in the floral account. Mixing it into the flower and leaf colors created lighter variations that made the simple forms read as more dimensional.
  7. Apply the documented wash, if following the historical method. In the earlier tutorial, Linauer diluted white paint with approximately one part paint to two parts water and applied the wash with a paper towel. This belongs to her earlier floor-cloth experiment; the floral post does not state that the same wash was used on every flower.
  8. Seal after the paint is dry. The tutorial reports three coats of non-yellowing lacquer. Because the lacquer looked very shiny, Linauer added two coats of clear matte spray finish. These are historical material choices, not a validated combination for every vinyl flooring type or for wet bathroom conditions.
  9. Let the complete coating system cure. The posts do not establish a laboratory-tested cure schedule, slip rating, or water-resistance result. Treat the cloth as unfinished until every layer is dry and hard according to the current coating manufacturer’s instructions.

How the floral design differs from the striped tutorial

The tutorial’s stripes demonstrate a repeatable layout, but the bathroom makeover cloth is a different visual problem. Large flowers and leaves need a hierarchy: a few dominant blooms, supporting leaves, and stems that connect the shapes without filling every gap. Linauer’s use of simple forms makes the design approachable for a painter who is comfortable drawing basic petals and leaves but does not want to reproduce a detailed botanical illustration.

Building a similar composition

  • Choose the largest flowers first and place them so the composition feels balanced from the room’s main viewing angle.
  • Use leaves to bridge empty spaces rather than adding many small flowers that could make the pattern look busy.
  • Reserve the brown stem color for connections and outlines that need definition.
  • Mix white into the original colors in small batches so lighter versions remain related to the base colors.
  • Keep a written note or small sample of each mixture if you need to touch up a damaged area later.

These are design implications of the documented choices, not additional steps claimed by Linauer. The defining characteristics of her cloth are the bold floral inspiration, freehand execution, four principal colors, brown stems, and white variation.

Finish choices and what the tutorial does not prove

The linked tutorial’s finish sequence is unusually specific: three coats of non-yellowing lacquer followed by two coats of clear matte spray finish to reduce the lacquer’s shine. That sequence explains the appearance Linauer wanted on her earlier cloth. It does not establish that the products are chemically compatible with every vinyl surface, that they will withstand standing water, or that they provide dependable slip resistance.

Bathroom floors introduce conditions the posts did not test. Water, cleaning chemicals, humidity, and bare feet can change how a coating performs. Before using any historical coating combination, read the current technical information for the exact vinyl and finish, test on an offcut, and stop if the film stays soft, remains tacky, wrinkles, or lifts. A successful small test does not certify long-term bathroom performance, but it can reveal an obvious incompatibility before the full piece is painted.

Edges, movement, and floor placement

Linauer intentionally left off fabric binding. She expected binding would make sweeping harder and create a place for dirt to collect. That choice leaves a clean vinyl edge, but it also means the cut must be neat and the cloth should be positioned where its edges will not catch on feet or equipment.

A reader asked, “How does it stay in one place? Doesn’t it slide around and move?” Linauer replied that her cloth did not slide in her small kitchen. For a larger room with a straight approach, she suggested temporary adhesive tape or a cut-to-size rug gripper. This is an anecdotal observation and suggestion, not a safety test or guarantee. A bathroom’s moisture and floor finish may alter traction, so check the cloth repeatedly after placement and remove it if it shifts.

A practical placement check

  • Set the cloth on a clean, dry floor with all corners flat.
  • Walk across it from several directions, including the route taken when entering the room.
  • Check the edges after the first few uses and after the floor has been damp-mopped.
  • Keep temporary tape or a properly sized gripper away from wet areas where it could lose adhesion or trap moisture.
  • Do not assume that a cloth that stayed put in Linauer’s small kitchen will behave the same way in another room.

Cleaning questions and realistic maintenance

The tutorial’s comment thread also asks, “How will you clean this?” Linauer’s preference for a smooth-backed remnant was motivated partly by cleaning: she found the dimpled back of an earlier remnant collected dirt. The posts do not report a controlled cleaning test, a list of approved cleaners, or a measured service life.

For that reason, maintenance should be conservative. Remove loose grit before it is ground into the surface, wipe spills promptly, and test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area or leftover scrap. Avoid treating the historical lacquer-and-spray sequence as proof that the finished cloth can be soaked, scrubbed aggressively, or exposed to every bathroom chemical. If the coating becomes cloudy, soft, sticky, or damaged, take the cloth out of service rather than relying on an unverified repair.

Choosing between a painted vinyl cloth and a fabric cloth

The 2013 floral post directs readers who would rather not paint flowers to an easy fabric floor-cloth method. The meaningful comparison is the substrate and the work involved, not an unsupported claim that one is more durable or safer.

Option Design method Work described in the posts Documented maintenance observation
Painted vinyl remnant Freehand paint on vinyl; the floral example uses large flowers, leaves, four colors, brown stems, and white variation. Cutting, priming, staged painting, and multiple clear coats in the linked historical tutorial. A smooth back was chosen because a dimpled back had collected dirt; slipping advice was anecdotal.
Fabric floor cloth Fabric-based method linked by the floral post for readers who do not want to paint flowers. The floral post points to the method but does not provide a controlled labor or finish comparison. The posts do not establish comparative durability, slip resistance, cost, or bathroom suitability.

Choose the painted route if the freehand floral effect is the reason for the project and you are prepared to test a coating system. Choose the fabric route if avoiding hand-painted flowers matters more than reproducing Linauer’s vinyl construction. Neither choice has a documented objective advantage for wet-room performance in these posts.

What is—and is not—established about bathroom use

Linauer made the floral cloth for a bathroom makeover, but the articles do not provide named project statistics, controlled durability testing, authoritative slip findings, cost figures, or a verified longevity period. They also do not establish that the historical primer, lacquer, or matte spray finish is suitable for every bathroom floor.

That distinction matters when adapting an inspirational project. The documented value is visual and procedural: a smooth-backed vinyl remnant can become a coordinated accent, and simple freehand forms can carry a bold floral design. Performance decisions require separate checking of the exact substrate, coatings, floor conditions, and local safety requirements.

A decision checklist before you start

  1. Confirm that the project goal is a decorative accent rather than a tested wet-area safety product.
  2. Find a vinyl remnant with a smooth back and retain an offcut for testing.
  3. Plan the floral arrangement and the finished dimensions before cutting.
  4. Decide whether the historical primer-and-lacquer sequence is appropriate only after checking current manufacturer information for the exact materials.
  5. Allow for the several-day tackiness problem reported in the tutorial and do not rush the drying stages.
  6. Test the completed finish for obvious softness, tackiness, lifting, or incompatibility before bringing it into the bathroom.
  7. Evaluate movement from the room’s actual approach and consider a removable tape or correctly sized gripper only if conditions allow.
  8. Adopt gentle cleaning practices and inspect the cloth regularly for wear or moisture damage.

The useful takeaway from Day 17

Bathroom Makeover Day 17 is valuable as a documented maker project, not as a current product specification. Linauer’s strongest lessons are to choose the substrate carefully, use a bold reference fabric to guide a simple freehand design, vary colors with white, and think about dirt and movement before the cloth reaches the floor. Her linked tutorial fills in the historical sequence of cutting, priming, painting, and sealing, while its tacky-primer experience and anecdotal slipping comments show why those steps should be treated as evidence of one project rather than guarantees for every bathroom.
