A fluid sculpture from plastic tubing is a shaped tube form with liquid moving through it. The 2009 Make: inspiration post identifies the basic idea as surgical tubing formed with a nifty knitter and a small liquid pump; later project accounts show how adding air can make bubbles travel through clear tubing. The original post is a starting point, not a complete build plan: it gives no tubing dimensions, pump capacity, or construction procedure.

What makes it a fluid sculpture?
The sculpture combines a visible form with motion. Flexible tubing is shaped or knitted into a loose, sculptural arrangement, then liquid is circulated through it. The moving fluid makes the tubing more than a static object; introducing air can add bubbles that drift or surge through the form.
Becky Stern’s short Make: post, published April 2, 2009, names surgical tubing, a nifty knitter, and a small liquid pump. Stern describes the result as mesmerizing, but the post does not include measurements, pump specifications, or step-by-step instructions.

Two documented ways to circulate fluid
Simple concept: shaped tubing and a small pump
The simplest version follows the components named in the original post: form flexible tubing into a sculptural shape and use a small liquid pump to move fluid through it. The source does not specify tubing diameter, length, pump model, flow rate, or how the tubing connects to the pump. Those details therefore cannot be treated as a proven recipe.
Bubble-flow version: water, air, and a return reservoir
A later installation record describes clear PVC tubing knitted into a loose form on an oversized circular loom. A water pump circulated green water, while a separate electric air pump injected air through a needle. The return line led to an open reservoir, where bubbles could escape before the water went back to the pump. The builder described bubbles moving slowly and then periodically releasing in a faster, wave-like motion. The installation was made in 2014, documented in 2024, and is now destroyed, so this is a retrospective account rather than a reproducible specification: the project record.

More controlled circulation: a diaphragm pump and valve
A separate project account describes a self-priming diaphragm pump handling both air and water, with a valve alternating between reservoir fluid and an air intake. The builder varied pump speed using pulse-width modulation and returned fluid to a reservoir. This illustrates one way to control a mixed air-and-liquid system; it does not establish that this pump or arrangement is best for every sculpture: the detailed project account.

If the priority is a straightforward moving-fluid concept, start with the simple version’s broad idea. If visible bubbles and changing motion are central to the effect, the documented variants show why air injection, a return path, and a place for bubbles to escape matter. The sources offer design examples, not a universal sizing or compatibility guide.

Flexible tubing is different from rigid PVC pipe sculpture
Rigid PVC pipe projects use cut pipe sections to make static forms; they are adjacent sculpture ideas, not fluid sculptures. One tutorial lists pipe, a heavy-duty cutter, hot glue and sticks, scrap cardboard, and spray paint. Another describes gluing cut pipe sections into an asymmetrical form. Neither describes circulating liquid: PVC pipe sculpture tutorial and another PVC sculpture guide.
Choose flexible tubing when the design depends on a fluid path and visible movement. Choose rigid pipe when the goal is a fixed geometric object. The materials and making process serve different outcomes.
