FLUX.1 Kontext is Black Forest Labs’ family of image-generation and editing models, announced on May 29, 2025. Its clearest distinction is an image-first editing workflow: provide a picture and an instruction, then refine that same visual across multiple turns. That makes it a meaningful competitor to Midjourney and OpenAI for controlled revisions and reference-image continuity—not a proven universal winner in image quality. The comparison below reflects the model and pricing information available in August 2026.
What is FLUX.1 Kontext?
Most text-to-image tools begin with a prompt and create a new image. An editing tool may instead ask you to paint a mask, select a region, or adjust image-to-image controls. Kontext is designed to let you provide an image alongside a plain-language instruction: for example, “Change the jacket to red, but keep the pose and background.” Black Forest Labs describes the system as handling text and image context for generation, modification, and coherent re-rendering.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat makes the important comparison about workflow, not just the quality of a fresh image. For a painter or designer, the practical question is whether the model can preserve the parts of a composition that already work while changing the part that does not.
Black Forest Labs announced the family and its Playground on May 29, 2025. The technical paper followed on June 17, 2025, and the open-weight Kontext [dev] release was announced on June 26, 2025. The paper describes a flow-matching model for in-context generation and editing in latent space; that explains the technical approach, but it is not an independent head-to-head proof of superiority over competing products. Black Forest Labs’ launch announcement and the technical paper provide the original descriptions.

What makes iterative editing useful?
Kontext is intended to support a continuing conversation with an image rather than a one-shot prompt. A typical sequence might be:
- Generate or upload a base image.
- Request one specific change, such as replacing a plain background with a snowy forest.
- Use the revised image as context for another instruction, such as adjusting the lighting or adding a sign.
- Continue until the asset is ready, checking after each pass that important details remain intact.
For painting, illustration, and concept work, this can be useful for exploring wardrobe, setting, palette, weather, or campaign variations while referring back to a chosen composition. Other plausible uses include product-background replacement, object addition or removal, sketch-to-scene development, sign-text revisions, and sets of images built around one visual identity.

Specific instructions help: say what should change, what must stay, where the change belongs, and what style, material, lighting, or camera treatment you want. If wording in an image must be exact, state that clearly and verify the result. “Character consistency” is a stated design goal and promoted use case, not a guarantee that a face, hands, pose, or surrounding details will remain pixel-identical through repeated edits.

Kontext [max], [pro], and [dev]: what is the difference?
| Variant | Access and role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| FLUX.1 Kontext [max] | Hosted through Black Forest Labs’ API and supported partners; positioned as the highest-quality proprietary Kontext option. | Paid hosted access; the API terms do not grant rights to download or self-host proprietary API models. |
| FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] | Hosted API and supported partners; intended for production generation and editing. | Paid hosted access; availability and terms can vary by provider. |
| FLUX.1 Kontext [dev] | 12-billion-parameter open-weight model for research, experimentation, and local or hosted development. | Released under the FLUX.1 Non-Commercial License for research and non-commercial use; do not assume a commercial product or hosted service is covered. |
Black Forest Labs lists support for ComfyUI, Hugging Face Diffusers, TensorRT, and existing FLUX.1 [dev] inference code. The [dev] weights are available via the Hugging Face model page; the release announcement describes the model and supported ecosystems. “Open-weight” is the precise description: access to weights does not by itself establish unrestricted redistribution, commercial deployment, or derivative-model rights. Review the current model card and license for the intended use, and contact Black Forest Labs about commercial licensing where needed.
The hosted [pro] and [max] APIs are governed separately. Black Forest Labs’ API service terms say API access is licensed for building integrations and do not grant rights to download, self-host, or create derivatives of those proprietary API models.
How does Kontext compare with Midjourney?
Midjourney and Kontext can both be used in creative image workflows, but their strengths are framed differently. Midjourney is a consumer-oriented hosted service associated with aesthetic exploration and community discovery. Kontext puts reference-image editing and developer access closer to the center of its proposition.

- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
| Need | FLUX.1 Kontext | Midjourney |
|---|---|---|
| Creative exploration | Can generate and then revise an image through instructions; suited to users who want to steer changes from a reference. | Often a natural fit for rapid visual ideation and style discovery in a hosted creative service. |
| Reference-image editing | A central advertised capability: provide an image and request a change. | Editing and reference features depend on Midjourney’s current tools and workflow; no equivalent current feature-by-feature evaluation is established here. |
| Consistency across revisions | Designed for iterative edits and visual continuity, but repeated turns can still introduce drift. | Do not assume either service guarantees identity or detail preservation; a controlled current comparison would be needed to rank them. |
| Local deployment | Possible with [dev], subject to its license, hardware, and setup requirements. | Not established as a local, open-weight deployment option by the available product information. |
| API and application integration | BFL offers hosted API access; [dev] also supports developer workflows. | A first-party API workflow is not established in the available information; check Midjourney’s current product documentation before building around one. |
| Ease and community | Hosted Playground avoids local setup, while APIs and local workflows add technical choices. | Its consumer-oriented service and community discovery can be more convenient for creators who do not need deployment control. |
This is a workflow distinction, not a quality ranking. No current independent benchmark establishes a definitive winner between Kontext and Midjourney for realism, typography, instruction following, editing fidelity, or character consistency. Check Midjourney’s current plans and feature availability directly at Midjourney; a current price was not established for this comparison.
How does Kontext compare with OpenAI image generation?
OpenAI’s GPT Image models also accept text and image inputs and can generate or edit images. The concrete API comparison here is with GPT Image 1, not an unspecified ChatGPT image feature: OpenAI’s model documentation describes the API capabilities and pricing, while a separate GPT Image 1.5 page reflects another model and price schedule.
| Criterion | FLUX.1 Kontext | OpenAI GPT Image 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow emphasis | In-context editing and iterative visual continuity are central to the product positioning. | Multimodal image generation and editing are available through OpenAI’s platform. |
| Access | BFL Playground/API, partner services, and [dev] weights. | OpenAI products and hosted API; the API is documented at GPT Image 1. |
| Local execution | Possible with [dev], subject to license and hardware. | GPT Image 1 is a hosted API model, not an open-weight local model. |
| Billing structure | Hosted [pro] and [max] have listed per-image credit prices; local inference shifts cost toward hardware and operations. | Image output pricing varies by quality and dimensions, with separate token charges also relevant. |
| Openness | [dev] is open-weight; [pro] and [max] are proprietary. | Proprietary hosted model. |
| Safety and provenance | Policies depend on BFL’s service or the specific deployment provider. | OpenAI documents safety controls and C2PA metadata for its image API in its API launch information. |
OpenAI lists approximate GPT Image 1 output prices for 1024×1024 images of $0.011 at low quality, $0.042 at medium, and $0.167 at high quality. Those are model- and output-setting-specific figures, not the full cost of every request: dimensions, input images, and text or image token charges can matter. OpenAI also lists GPT Image 1.5 as a previous image-generation model with different pricing; consult its model page rather than treating “OpenAI image generation” as one fixed product.

What does hosted use cost, and what should businesses check?
Black Forest Labs’ pricing documentation lists one credit as $0.01 USD and states that Playground and API pricing are the same. In that documentation, FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] is 4 credits ($0.04) per image and [max] is 8 credits ($0.08) per image. These are listed hosted prices; confirm the current rate and model before budgeting because prices and model offerings can change. See BFL’s pricing documentation.
A per-image figure is not necessarily the cost of a finished asset. A multi-turn edit may involve several generations, retries, input-image handling, and a chosen output quality or resolution. For a fair workflow comparison, count the number of attempts needed to reach an acceptable result, not just the price of one output. BFL’s credit units and OpenAI’s quality-, dimension-, and token-based charges are not directly interchangeable.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose Kontext [max] when hosted reference editing is central and you prefer BFL’s highest-quality proprietary option over minimizing per-image cost.
- Choose Kontext [pro] when you need hosted Kontext editing or production API integration at its lower listed price point, subject to confirming current capabilities and rates.
- Consider Kontext [dev] for research, non-commercial local experimentation, or development where control matters enough to justify hardware and setup. Secure separate licensing before commercial deployment.
- Consider Midjourney when fast creative exploration, a consumer-oriented interface, and style discovery matter more than local execution or an application API.
- Consider OpenAI GPT Image when your product already uses OpenAI APIs, you want managed multimodal infrastructure, or its platform safety and provenance features suit your requirements.
What are Kontext’s limitations?
- Edits can drift. A sequence of changes may alter facial features, hands, pose, objects, or composition that you wanted to retain.
- Local changes are not always isolated. A request aimed at one detail can also affect nearby forms, lighting, or background structure.
- Precise text and fine geometry need review. Typography is a promoted capability, not a guarantee of exact spelling; logos, jewelry, hands, and fine product details remain demanding cases.
- Local use is technical. Model downloads, suitable GPU resources, dependencies, quantization choices, and workflow configuration can affect feasibility and speed.
- Hosted use has operational trade-offs. Per-image charges, latency, rate limits, privacy terms, and reliance on provider availability matter in production.
- Availability changes. Partner listings, endpoints, model names, and prices are subject to change; verify the specific service you intend to use.
Verdict: a serious editing competitor, not a universal replacement
FLUX.1 Kontext’s strongest case is iterative editing from a reference image, combined with an open-weight developer option. That makes it especially relevant to creators who need controlled revisions, and to developers who value deployment choices. Midjourney remains a sensible fit for hosted creative exploration; OpenAI’s GPT Image is a managed multimodal option for teams already working in that ecosystem. No evidence here supports declaring one model the best across all image tasks, so choose by workflow, licensing, and the cost of producing a finished asset.
