A historical Putney project report describes Foamular panels screw-fixed to studs or masonry and finished with a PM render system. Separately, Render Systems Australia (RSA) publishes a coating-system guide for Austech Foamula XPS in a “skin off” condition. That guide is system-specific: its fixing, movement-joint, membrane, mesh, render, finish and protective-coating requirements must be followed as one build-up, and the current documents must be accepted for the particular project.

What Foamular is
FOAMULAR is an extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid insulation board. Austech identifies Owens Corning Asia Pacific as the manufacturer and Austech External Building Products as the Australian distributor. The current product page describes long-term insulation, moisture resistance and durability characteristics, and lists an insulation value of R-5 per inch. It also says R-value is cumulative when boards are combined. Product information and dates on that page may be NSW-specific, so a project in another Australian jurisdiction should confirm the applicable grade and documentation with the relevant Austech branch. See Austech’s current FOAMULAR information.
The brochure describes the board as a closed-cell, homogeneous product. Its listed applications include green roofs, wine cellars, insulation under residential slabs, cool rooms, cold-storage floors, double-brick cavity insulation and model making. Those applications show where Austech positions the insulation; they do not, by themselves, approve an external PM-render facade. The 2020 brochure also states that Foamular is warranted to maintain 90% of its insulating value for 20 years. That is a brochure claim and should be checked against the current warranty, board grade and project conditions before it is written into a specification. The brochure is available from Austech’s Foamular PDF.
What the available PM-render evidence actually proves
A historical project account
A Spec-Net report on a Putney residential project says Kynfield selected Foamular XPS as an external insulation and render substrate. In that reported assembly, the panels were screw-fixed directly to studs or masonry and finished with a PM render system. The article, published approximately in 2014, also reports 75 mm of Foamular as R2.67. That figure belongs to the described project and period; it is not a current generalized R-value for every Foamular thickness or grade. Read the project account at Spec-Net.

An RSA system guide for a defined substrate condition
The more actionable document is RSA’s guide titled RSA Coating System for Austech Foamula Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) (Skin Off). “Foamula” is the spelling used in that PDF title; the insulation product is Foamular. RSA strongly recommends using its complete render and texture systems with an appropriate watertight membrane over polystyrene products. The guide requires the board installation and fixing to be correct before coating starts, movement joints to be located correctly and continued through the coating, approved UV-resistant PVC corner beads and trims, alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh at openings and across the board, EP Render at the documented thickness, an RSA acrylic render or trowel-on texture, and the specified exterior-grade protective coating. The guide also sets drying, moisture and film-thickness conditions. Obtain the current version and project acceptance from RSA’s XPS coating-system guide; the version/date was not visible in the accessed text.
RSA’s general substrate page lists EPS, masonry, fibre cement, AAC and other categories but does not list Foamular XPS as a separate category. That makes the XPS-specific PDF the relevant reference rather than an assumption that an EPS detail can be transferred unchanged. See RSA’s substrate specifications.
How the Foamular-to-PM-render build-up is intended to work
1. Structural wall and board selection
The wall behind the insulation may be studs or masonry in the historical example, but the supporting wall, moisture control and fixing design have to be established for the actual building. Select the Foamular grade, thickness and edge profile for the exposure and application; do not select solely from an R-value. Confirm that the particular board is accepted by the render manufacturer and by the project’s building designer.

2. Mechanical fixing
The Putney report describes screw-fixing panels to studs or masonry. That is evidence of one project method, not a universal screw size, spacing or anchor schedule. The current RSA guide directs the installer to check the board installation and fixing pattern. The pattern must account for the supporting substrate, wind actions, board layout, fastener capacity, edge distances and the render system’s requirements. A render coat is not a substitute for a mechanically secure insulation layer.

3. The “skin off” surface condition
RSA’s XPS guide is written for Foamular with the skin removed. Treat that as a specified substrate condition, not as permission to coat any Foamular surface. Follow the current guide for how the skin is removed, how the exposed face is made ready, and how long the board may remain exposed. If the project calls for a different surface preparation, obtain written acceptance rather than inferring it from an EPS installation detail.
4. Membrane and water management
RSA recommends its full system with an appropriate watertight membrane over polystyrene products. The membrane is part of the moisture-management strategy, not an optional paint layer. Its compatibility, laps, terminations, penetrations and connection to windows, sills, flashings and the base of the wall need to be resolved before mesh and render conceal the work. Use the membrane named or accepted by the system documentation; an accessory from another system is not automatically interchangeable.
5. Movement joints and trims
Control, movement and expansion joints in the wall must be placed in the correct locations and carried through every coating layer. They cannot disappear beneath a continuous render skin. RSA also calls for approved UV-resistant PVC corner beads and trims. Use those profiles at external corners, returns, openings and other locations shown by the current detail set. Trims must be embedded and aligned without creating thin spots or an unsealed path for water.

The RSA guide calls for alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh at openings and across the board. Openings deserve special attention because corners concentrate movement and stress. Install the mesh, overlaps and extra pieces exactly as the current system detail states; do not assume that a general-purpose fiberglass mesh has the required alkali resistance or weight. Mesh should be fully embedded in the specified base coat rather than left exposed or placed only on isolated cracks.

7. Base render, finish and protection
For the RSA build-up, the guide specifies a 4 mm EP Render application. It then identifies an RSA acrylic render or trowel-on texture as the finish route. Where a trowel-on acrylic is selected, the guide specifies a minimum 1 mm dry-film thickness. The required exterior protective coating varies with the finish chosen. These figures and products apply to that RSA system and the stated “skin off” substrate; they are not generic PM-render rules that can be copied into another manufacturer’s specification.
Recommended installation and approval workflow
- Define the assembly. Record the wall type, Foamular product and grade, thickness, exposure, finish, openings, parapets, base details and interfaces with adjacent materials.
- Obtain current documents. Download the latest Foamular technical and warranty information and the current RSA XPS coating guide. The RSA PDF available at the cited URL has no visible version date in the extracted text, so confirm that the document is current.
- Secure system acceptance. Ask the render manufacturer to confirm in writing that the exact Foamular grade and “skin off” condition are accepted, including the membrane, mesh, trims, EP Render, finish and protective coating.
- Check the supporting wall. Verify that studs or masonry are sound, dry and within the tolerances required for the board and fixing system. Resolve dampness, movement, unevenness and penetrations before insulation is installed.
- Set out the boards and joints. Plan board staggering, corners, openings, control joints and transitions. Do not place board joints or movement joints where the approved detail prohibits them.
- Install and fix the XPS. Fit the boards tightly and mechanically fix them using the engineered pattern for the actual substrate. Record fastener type, spacing and pull-out verification where the project specification requires it.
- Prepare the face. Produce the “skin off” condition required by RSA, protect the exposed XPS from damage and contamination, and complete any specified priming or preparation before coating.
- Install membrane, trims and reinforcement. Apply the approved watertight membrane, then place UV-resistant PVC beads and trims, movement-joint components and alkali-resistant mesh at openings and across the board as detailed.
- Apply the coating sequence. Apply the 4 mm EP Render and the selected RSA acrylic render or trowel-on texture. Verify the 1 mm minimum dry-film requirement where that finish is used, and apply the compatible exterior protective coating.
- Control curing and inspect. Follow the guide’s moisture, drying and film-thickness conditions. Protect fresh work from weather and impact, inspect joints and penetrations, and retain photographs, batch details and sign-off records.

Performance figures and how to quote them responsibly
| Figure | Source and meaning | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| R-5 per inch | Austech’s current FOAMULAR page | Product-page claim accessed in 2026; confirm the applicable Australian grade, test basis and NSW-specific applicability. |
| 90% of insulating value for 20 years | Austech Foamular brochure, 2020 | Brochure warranty statement; verify the current warranty terms and conditions. |
| 75 mm = R2.67 | Spec-Net’s historical Putney project report, approximately 2014 | Project-era value, not a current universal rating for all Foamular boards. |
Do not combine these figures into a new performance promise. R-value depends on the specified product, thickness, temperature basis, joints and installation quality; the render system adds moisture and impact-control requirements rather than changing the board’s published rating.
Common failure points and corrective actions
Using an EPS detail without checking the XPS guide
Risk: EPS and XPS differ in surface condition and system acceptance. Action: use the RSA guide that names Austech XPS and obtain written approval for any deviation.
Fixing only the render, not the insulation
Risk: loose or poorly supported boards can move, telegraph joints and crack the finish. Action: verify the engineered fixing pattern before membrane, mesh and render hide the fasteners.

Stopping movement joints at the board
Risk: a joint that ends beneath the render creates a restraint point and a likely crack line. Action: continue the approved joint through all coating layers and seal or terminate it as detailed.
Skipping reinforcement around openings
Risk: diagonal cracking commonly begins where stress is concentrated at corners. Action: install the specified alkali-resistant mesh and opening reinforcement before the base render cures.
Mixing products from unrelated systems
Risk: membranes, meshes, primers, renders and protective coats may have incompatible adhesion, movement or vapour behaviour. Action: use the named complete system or obtain documented compatibility for every substitution.

Risk: trapped moisture, weak film formation, staining or delamination. Action: follow the current RSA guide’s drying, moisture and film-thickness limits and record weather conditions during application.
Relying on an old project article as approval
Risk: product grades, codes, warranties and render formulations change. Action: treat the Putney report as historical evidence of use and base today’s specification on current manufacturer documentation and project sign-off.
Specifier’s document checklist
- Current Foamular product data, grade and warranty for the project location.
- Structural substrate and fixing design, including fastener schedule and wind assumptions.
- Current RSA XPS coating guide and written acceptance of the exact board condition.
- Watertight membrane technical data and details at windows, doors, flashings, parapets and the wall base.
- Movement-joint layout carried through the render, plus approved corner beads and trims.
- Mesh type, opening reinforcement, overlaps and embedding requirements.
- EP Render thickness, selected acrylic or trowel-on finish, protective coating and dry-film requirements.
- Weather, moisture, curing and protection procedures, with inspection records.
- Maintenance instructions and a record of any approved substitutions.
Bottom line
Foamular XPS can sit beneath a PM-render finish when the exact board, surface preparation, fixing design and coating products are accepted as one engineered system. The historical Putney project demonstrates reported use; RSA’s XPS-specific guide provides a more detailed route involving a “skin off” board, secure fixing, membrane, continuous movement joints, approved trims, alkali-resistant mesh, 4 mm EP Render, a compatible acrylic finish and protective coating. Neither source justifies treating every Foamular surface or every PM render as compatible. Confirm current documents and written project approval before installation.
