These four winter craft projects turn ordinary paper, paper plates and art supplies into four different decorations: a hanging snowflake, a folded tabletop village, a flat snow-globe picture with moving confetti, and a wreath for a door or window. Choose the snowflake for a suspended display, the village for a small scene, the snow globe for an interactive picture, or the wreath for a circular decoration. Each project below includes the materials and construction sequence from its source instructions, plus practical ways to adapt the design with supplies you already have.
Four projects at a glance
| Project | Finished form | Main making method | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanging paper snowflake | Three-dimensional decoration suspended by string | Cut, shape and join repeated paper segments | Cornell Alumni |
| Paper winter village | Folded paper scene with houses and trees | Accordion-fold a base, then cut and attach details | Crayola |
| Paper-plate winter snow globe | Flat picture with loose paper “snow” that moves inside | Paint, layer plates and plastic wrap, then add punched pieces | Crayola |
| Paper-plate winter wreath | Decorated ring for a door or window | Remove the plate center, color the ring and embellish it | The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum |
The instructions do not provide a consistent basis for comparing completion time, price, durability or difficulty, so the projects are not ranked on those measures.

Cornell Alumni’s snowflake is assembled from six matching paper sections. When the sections are joined, the result is a dimensional decoration that can hang from a ceiling, light fixture or window area.
Materials
- Six 8-by-8-inch paper squares
- A cutting tool
- Clear tape
- A stapler
- String for hanging
Construction steps
- Prepare six equal 8-by-8-inch squares. Cornell says recycled paper, FSC-certified paper, newspaper, wrapping paper or brown paper bags can all be used.
- Cut and shape each square into one snowflake segment, following the pattern and folds in the Cornell Alumni directions.
- Use clear tape where the shaped segment needs to hold its form.
- Repeat the cutting and shaping process until all six segments match.
- Bring the segments together to form the snowflake and staple the joined sections so the structure stays connected.
- Attach string to the completed snowflake and suspend it where all sides can be seen.
Ways to personalize it
Varying the paper changes the visual character without changing the basic construction: newspaper gives a printed pattern, wrapping paper adds color, and brown paper bags create a kraft-paper look. Recycled or FSC-certified sheets support a reuse-oriented version. If a large snowflake is not practical, keep the six-square format but use smaller equal squares; that is an adaptation rather than a dimension specified by Cornell.

2. Fold a paper winter village
The winter village is a standing paper scene rather than a hanging ornament. Its accordion-folded base creates a row of surfaces for cut-out houses and trees, so it works well as a small tabletop display or a backdrop for winter artwork.
Materials
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Markers
- Optional glitter glue
Construction steps
- Fold a sheet of construction paper back and forth into an accordion. Press each crease so the base can stand in a zigzag.
- Draw or trace simple house and tree shapes on additional construction paper.
- Cut out the buildings and trees. Use different sizes or roof shapes to create a varied skyline.
- Decorate the cut-outs with markers. Add windows, doors, roof lines, trunks and other details before attaching them.
- Glue the houses and trees to the accordion-folded base, spacing them so the folds remain visible and the scene can open.
- Add glitter glue if desired, allowing the decorated pieces to dry before moving the village.
Age guidance and adaptations
Crayola’s page displays age guidance beginning at six and includes both “6+” and “8+” labels. Those labels describe the page’s guidance; they are not a universal safety rating for every child or classroom. An adult can prepare complicated shapes while a child handles drawing and decorating, according to the materials and supervision appropriate to that child.

Keep the village monochrome for a snowy architectural scene, or use contrasting construction-paper colors for roofs, trees and a background. Household cardboard can serve as a sturdier base where it suits the design, but that substitution is not part of Crayola’s stated materials.
3. Create a paper-plate winter snow globe
This project resembles a snow globe in picture form. It is not a sealed glass globe: the winter scene is layered between paper plates and plastic wrap, with punched cardstock pieces that move as the finished craft is handled.

Materials
- Paper plates
- Cardstock
- Plastic wrap
- Glue
- Paint
- Markers
- Paintbrushes
- A hole punch
Construction steps
- Paint a winter scene on one paper plate. Add a sky, snow-covered ground, trees, a house or any other imagery you want inside the globe.
- Use a second plate to create a frame by cutting away its center, leaving a circular ring.
- Cover the opening of the ring with plastic wrap and secure it so the wrap forms a clear window.
- Punch small pieces from cardstock to make the loose “snow.” Use a hole punch for consistent shapes, or punch different colors for a playful effect.
- Place the punched pieces over the painted scene, then align the ring and the scene plate.
- Glue the plates together around their edges, keeping the confetti inside the layered picture.
- Decorate the front or rim with markers after the glue has set, taking care not to block the clear window.
What makes this version interactive
Because the cardstock pieces are loose inside the layered plates, tilting or moving the craft lets them drift across the painted scene. Crayola’s page lists age guidance beginning at six; use the supervision and cutting arrangements that fit the child making it. The activity is best displayed as a flat picture that can be picked up and tilted, rather than treated like a water-filled or glass ornament.
4. Turn a paper plate into a winter wreath
The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum’s wreath uses a paper plate as a circular base. Removing the center leaves a ring that can be colored, covered with small decorations and hung with ribbon or wool.

Materials
- A paper plate
- Green coloring material, such as paint, crayons or markers
- Pom-poms
- Optional sequins
- Ribbon or wool for hanging
Construction steps
- Cut out the center of the paper plate, leaving the outer rim intact as the wreath form.
- Color the ring green.
- Glue pom-poms around the ring as ornaments or berries.
- Add sequins if you want extra sparkle.
- Thread or attach ribbon or wool to the top so the wreath can hang on a door or window.
Use reused materials
The museum suggests old magazines as a source of green material. Tear or cut suitable green areas into small pieces and attach them to the ring instead of coloring the entire plate. Ordinary household paper and available art supplies can fill similar roles where they fit your design; not every substitute has been specifically tested in the museum’s instructions.

Choose by the finished object
- Want something suspended? Choose the six-segment snowflake and add string.
- Want a scene that stands on its own? Choose the accordion-folded village.
- Want an image that responds to movement? Choose the paper-plate snow globe with loose cardstock snow.
- Want a door or window decoration? Choose the plate-ring wreath.
Choose by the main technique
- The snowflake emphasizes repeated cutting, shaping and joining.
- The village emphasizes accurate folding, cut-paper silhouettes and drawing.
- The snow globe combines painting, layering and a confetti effect.
- The wreath emphasizes decorating a single circular base.
Choose by what you already have
For the strongest reuse angle, start with the materials explicitly identified by the sources: Cornell permits recycled paper, newspaper, wrapping paper and brown paper bags for the snowflake, while the museum suggests old magazines for the wreath. The other projects call for construction paper or cardstock, plates, glue and common drawing or painting supplies. You can adapt colors and decorations to your existing stash, but keep the structural steps that make each finished form work.

An optional, more elaborate wreath
If you want a fuller wreath than the paper-plate version, D23’s snowflake wreath tutorial specifies a 13.8-inch foam ring, two colors of tulle, ornaments, ribbon, scissors and hot glue. It recommends displaying that wreath indoors or on a fully covered door. D23 directs that an adult handle both cutting and hot-glue work. This is a more supply-intensive alternative, not one of the four core paper-plate projects above.
Plan your making session
- Pick the finished form you want before buying or gathering supplies.
- Collect the base materials first: equal paper squares for the snowflake, construction paper for the village, plates and plastic wrap for the snow globe, or a plate and decorations for the wreath.
- Prepare a clear work surface where cut pieces can stay sorted by project.
- Do cutting before gluing when several small parts are needed, so the scene can be arranged and adjusted dry.
- Leave painted, glittered or glued pieces undisturbed until they are set, then add string, ribbon or final details.
Whether you want a hanging snowflake, a standing village, a movable snow picture or a wreath, these projects keep the core materials familiar while giving the finished decoration a distinct shape and purpose.
