Yes—the classic wooden stool still has room for major design change. Four examples documented by Azure Magazine show how much can be altered without abandoning the basic idea of a raised wooden seat: the seat can be circular or semicircular, the support can use three legs or four, braces can become a visible part of the structure, and a cutout can turn a practical object into a characterful one.
The examples are Castor Stool Plus by Big-Game for Karimoku Case Study, Portado by Christian Haas for Favius, Lad by the Montreal studio Found, and Smile Stool by Jaime Hayon for Benchmark Furniture. The source feature, written by Evan Pavka and published May 31, 2021, is a dated design survey. Its availability statements describe the publication period, not confirmed stock today.

Is there still room to improve the classic wooden stool?
A stool has a deliberately simple brief: provide a seat with a compact support structure. That simplicity leaves designers with a visible set of decisions. How thin can the seat appear? Should the legs read as separate posts, a continuous turned form, or a sculptural frame? Is the brace hidden, emphasized, or omitted from the visual language? And should the object look neutral, architectural, or expressive?
These four designs answer those questions in distinctly different ways. Castor Stool Plus reduces the silhouette to a thin circular seat and four slender cylindrical legs. Portado uses a semicircular seat and angled tapered legs, with softly rolled edges tempering its geometry. Lad makes the support legible through three column-like legs and slender braces. Smile Stool turns the turned-leg construction into an image: viewed from above, its two circles and moon-shaped opening suggest a smiling face.

Because the feature does not provide a complete specification sheet for every model, the measurements should not be treated as a standardized performance comparison. They are the dimensions reported in that 2021 article, and some designs have substantially more published detail than others.
Castor Stool Plus: a restrained, universal seat
What the source reports
Castor Stool Plus was designed by Big-Game for Karimoku Case Study. The feature calls it an “essential and universal seat” and places it in a family with the Castor Dining Bench and Castor Chair. Its principal form is spare: four slender cylindrical wood legs support a thin circular seat.
The construction is not merely decorative. The source mentions a reinforced joint, indicating that the meeting point between the legs and seat was an identified part of the design rather than an invisible afterthought. It also describes an upholstered cushion intended to match three colorways. No overall height, seat diameter, wood species, or current retail price is given in the feature.
Why the silhouette matters
A circular seat has no prescribed front, so the stool can be approached from any direction. Four cylindrical legs provide a visually even rhythm around that circle, while their slenderness keeps the object from reading as a block. The result is a design that emphasizes proportion and family resemblance instead of a dramatic gesture.
The cushion introduces a second layer of interpretation. The stool can remain visually minimal in its wood-only form, or the upholstery can add color while retaining the same basic geometry. Since the article does not identify the three colorways, it is more accurate to treat them as a documented design option than to infer specific hues.

Portado: softened geometry in European oak
Construction and finishes
Christian Haas designed Portado for Favius. The feature describes a solid European oak stool with a semicircular seat, angled tapered legs, and softly rolled edges. It reports two finishes: oiled European oak and black-stained European oak.

The published dimensions are 45 cm wide and 46 cm high. Those figures establish the scale reported by the source, but they do not provide every dimension a buyer or maker might want, such as seat depth, leg spacing, or weight. The 45 cm width should therefore remain attached to the article’s stated measurement rather than being treated as a universal specification for every Portado version.
How Portado changes the familiar stool
The semicircular seat gives Portado a directional quality that a round seat does not have. Its flat side and curved front create a clear visual orientation, while angled tapered legs add a sense of movement compared with straight cylindrical supports. Softly rolled edges keep those changes from becoming severe or mechanical.
Material and finish also alter the reading. Oiled oak leaves the wood as the dominant visual subject, making grain and tonal variation part of the appearance. Black staining keeps the oak construction but shifts attention toward outline and shadow. The source establishes those two finish choices; it does not report how either finish performs under particular environments or maintenance routines.
Lad: three legs, visible braces, made to order
Reported details
Lad comes from Found, a Montreal studio that the feature says makes the stools to order. The design is described in black or natural oak, with a solid wood seat available in 45.7 cm or 61 cm diameters. Three column-like legs support the seat, and slender braces are part of the construction. The article says the stools arrive assembled.

No seat height, total footprint, weight, or exact brace dimensions are reported. The two seat diameters are therefore the most useful direct measurements available: 45.7 cm and 61 cm. They describe the seat options, not a complete statement of how much floor space each finished stool occupies.
What the three-leg arrangement communicates
Three supports establish a triangular base rather than the four-point rhythm seen on Castor Stool Plus. The column-like legs make the supports read as substantial vertical elements, while the slender braces expose the logic of the frame. In visual terms, Lad balances mass at the seat and leg columns with finer lines at the braces.
The made-to-order context is significant because it distinguishes Lad from a design presented only as a fixed catalogue object. It suggests a production process organized around individual orders, but the feature does not state lead times, customization limits, geographic delivery, or current ordering conditions. “Arrives assembled” is the one assembly detail explicitly reported.
Smile Stool: turned wood with a visual punch line
Form and provenance
Jaime Hayon designed Smile Stool for Benchmark Furniture. The feature describes it as a solid cherry stool measuring 46 cm in height. Two circles formed by the turned legs and a moon-shaped opening create a smile-like face when the stool is viewed from above.
The design was originally made for the Connected initiative associated with the 2020 London Design Festival. The 2021 article reported it as available through Benchmark Furniture at that time. That publication-era statement should not be read as confirmation of current stock, regional availability, or an unchanged product specification.

Why the top view is part of the design
Many stools are judged primarily from the side, where seat height and leg profile dominate. Smile Stool adds a deliberate overhead view. The circular elements and crescent-like opening turn the support structure into an image, so the stool has a recognizable expression even when it is not being used.
Cherry gives the object a different material identity from the oak examples in the feature. The source identifies the wood as solid cherry, but it does not provide a finish schedule, seat diameter, leg thickness, or load rating. The smile is therefore the documented distinguishing feature, not evidence of any particular comfort or structural performance.
How the four designs compare
The table separates facts explicitly reported in the feature from specifications it does not provide. All dimensions below come from the May 31, 2021 publication.

The design decisions that connect them
Seat geometry changes the stool’s orientation
Castor Stool Plus uses a fully circular seat, which keeps its visual front open. Lad also offers circular seats, but its three-leg base gives the object a different structural rhythm. Portado’s semicircle establishes a front and back through its straight and curved edges. Smile Stool makes the top view consequential, turning the plan of the stool into part of its identity.
These distinctions matter when reading a stool as an object in a room. A round seat can appear more rotational and non-directional; a semicircular seat can align with a wall, counter, or conversation position; an expressive overhead pattern can reward placement where the top is visible. Those are design readings, not claims about comfort or suitability for a specific task.

Support structures can be quiet or expressive
Castor’s four slender cylinders aim for visual restraint. Portado’s angled, tapered legs make the stance more active. Lad exposes a three-legged frame and its braces, treating construction as part of the appearance. Smile Stool pushes turned support components into a recognizable graphic motif.
The feature does not include laboratory tests, load ratings, durability studies, or first-hand use. Consequently, the differences should be discussed as silhouette and construction language, not as proof that one design is stronger, safer, or more comfortable than another.

European oak appears in Portado, while Lad is described in oak with black or natural treatments. Smile Stool is solid cherry. Castor Stool Plus is identified as a wooden design, with upholstery offered as a coordinated option, but the source does not name a species or the three cushion colors.
That range demonstrates how finish can change the same category of object. Natural or oiled surfaces keep grain and species visible. Black staining gives oak a more graphic outline without changing the underlying material. Cherry supplies a separate wood identity. None of these descriptions should be extended into claims about maintenance, aging, or colorfastness that the feature does not establish.
How to evaluate a reimagined wooden stool
If you are studying these designs as references for a room, a furniture brief, or a painting project, use a fact-based checklist rather than assuming that a striking silhouette answers every practical question:
- Confirm the dimensions you actually need. The feature gives Portado’s width and height, Lad’s seat diameters, and Smile Stool’s height, but not a full set for every design.
- Identify the seat orientation. Decide whether a circular seat, semicircle, or a directional top suits the intended placement.
- Read the support structure. Look for four cylinders, angled tapered legs, three columns with braces, or turned forms with a cutout.
- Separate species from finish. Oak, cherry, natural treatment, oil, and black stain describe different aspects of the object and should not be treated as interchangeable terms.
- Ask what is documented about production. Lad is described as made to order and assembled on arrival; the other entries do not receive the same production detail.
- Verify current information independently. The source is a May 31, 2021 feature, so current price, stock, shipping, dimensions, and regional availability require confirmation from the relevant maker or retailer.
What the 2021 feature establishes—and what it does not
The article establishes a useful design record: four named stools, their credited designers or studios, the principal materials and finishes reported for each, distinctive seat and support geometries, and a limited set of measurements. It also captures the production context stated at publication, including Lad’s made-to-order description and Smile Stool’s connection to Connected and the 2020 London Design Festival.
It does not establish a current market survey, universal availability, pricing, performance ranking, comfort comparison, durability result, or standardized specification set. No named statistic or independently attributed quotation accompanies the designs. Treating the feature as a dated design reference keeps the conclusions precise: these are examples of how designers continue to reinterpret the wooden stool, not proof that one model is objectively better than another.
