Choose a format that fits how you like to reflect

Seven-day journals do not follow one standard layout. Some guide a weekly review, some give one prompt per day, and others pair a morning intention with an evening reflection or build toward a themed review. These examples illustrate different approaches rather than a universal template.

Format What it offers Example
Weekly review Looks back on what happened, feelings, skills used, and goals for the next week. Mental Health America’s journaling prompts
One prompt each day A short daily question, with room to write freely. Grinnell College’s seven-day challenge
Morning and evening reflections Pairs a daily intention with a later check-in. Kids Help Phone’s journaling activities and Soul Clarity’s guided journal
Themed practice plus review Uses a particular approach or theme, then leaves space to review the week. Lectio Divina’s free journal

The Lectio Divina example is a ten-page PDF with a worked entry, seven entries, and a weekly review; its publisher says it can be typed into or printed. Soul Clarity describes a 31-page guided journal with morning and evening reflections, and its page requires email access. Those page counts and access details apply to those specific resources, not to seven-day journals generally.

Seven prompts for a week of reflection

Use one question a day, or choose the ones that feel relevant. Write a few lines or more; blank space is an invitation, not a requirement.

  1. Day 1 — What feels new? What is one thing about your surroundings or routine that you noticed today?
  2. Day 2 — What mattered today? What did you make time for, and what would you like to prioritize tomorrow?
  3. Day 3 — What are you grateful for? Name something small or significant that you appreciated today.
  4. Day 4 — What did you feel? What happened today, and what feelings came up?
  5. Day 5 — What helped you through? What strength, skill, person, or source of calm supported you?
  6. Day 6 — What felt most alive? When did you feel engaged, curious, or most like yourself?
  7. Day 7 — What do you want to carry forward? What would you like to remember, change, or make a goal for next week?

The prompts draw on themes used by Mental Health America, Kids Help Phone, and Grinnell College, including feelings, strengths, gratitude, daily priorities, and next steps. They are adaptable examples, not a prescribed clinical program.

Optional weekly review

If you want a closing page, answer any of these after Day 7:

  • What stands out from the week?
  • What helped when something was difficult?
  • What would you like to do differently next week?
  • What is one small goal or intention to carry forward?

Mental Health America suggests reviewing the week, feelings, skills used, what could have gone better, and goals for the week ahead. Use the questions that help you reflect; it is fine to leave others unanswered.

Print it, type it, or use the prompts without a PDF

  • Print: Print the pages you want to use. The sources do not specify special paper.
  • Type: Enter answers in a PDF only if its fields support typing. Some PDFs are printable but not fillable.
  • Write or adapt: Copy the prompts into an existing notebook or app, or use them in a freeform journal.
  • Use speech-to-text: Kids Help Phone describes this as an option, but notes it may not work on every device, platform, or browser.

No special device or paper is required for the journaling approaches described by these sources.

Keep the routine flexible

There is no minimum frequency you have to meet. If you miss a day, continue with the next prompt or skip ahead to the weekly review. You can also shorten an entry, change a question, or leave a page blank. Kids Help Phone notes that journaling can take time to incorporate and that other tools may suit someone better.

What journaling can—and cannot—do

Mental Health America says journaling can sometimes help people process emotions or a difficult situation. Kids Help Phone describes it as a way to make time for reflection and work through experiences. These are possibilities, not a promise of a particular result; the sources do not establish comparative effectiveness or a guaranteed outcome for a seven-day template.

A journal is not a substitute for therapy. One Percent Counseling states: “This resource is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for therapy and does not establish a therapeutic relationship with One Percent Counseling.” If writing is not helping, it is reasonable to try another way of reflecting or seek appropriate support.
