Free charity quilt patterns are available from quilting publishers and guilds, but there is no single standard size or set of donation rules. Choose a pattern only after checking the intended recipient’s current size, materials, quilting, labeling, and delivery requirements.

Where to find free charity quilt patterns

Patterns with multiple finished sizes

AllPeopleQuilt’s “Free Charity Quilt Patterns,” credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors and updated September 10, 2026, lists seven easy patterns with instructions for multiple finished sizes. That makes it easier to adapt a design to a charity’s requested dimensions. Examples include Positive Effect, with large plus-sign blocks and a fast-sewing design; Inside Out, made from two simple blocks; Make the Connection, suited to scraps; and Square Knot, which uses precut 2.5-inch strips. Check the current pattern entries for complete instructions and available size options.

Guild pattern collections

Great Lakes Heritage Quilters describes its free patterns as approachable for new or time-pressed quilters and suitable for charity quilts. Its collection includes designs for NICU recipients, children, throws, and wheelchair quilts, such as Sew Fast, Through the Window Again, Candy Stripe 3-Yard Quilt, Super-Sized Nine Patch (which yields three quilts), and Baby Star. The collection also identifies Moda Love Charm Star as charm-pack friendly and gives its finished dimensions as 32 × 32 inches, describing it as suitable for a Tiny Miracles NICU quilt. Follow the linked pattern’s instructions and the receiving program’s current rules.

Choose a size for the recipient, not for “charity quilts” in general

Suggested dimensions vary by organization and recipient. These examples are program-specific guidance, not a universal standard:

Organization or program Recipient type Suggested or accepted finished size
Citrus Belt Quilters Baby Approximately 30 × 40 inches
Citrus Belt Quilters Child or teen Approximately 40 × 50 inches
Citrus Belt Quilters Adult lap Approximately 50 × 65 inches
Citrus Belt Quilters Wheelchair Approximately 40 × 40 inches
Citrus Belt Quilters Doll Approximately 18 × 24 inches
Charlotte Quilters’ Guild NICU cuddle quilt 36–40 inches wide × 36–42 inches long
Charlotte Quilters’ Guild Pediatric cuddle quilt 36–40 inches wide × 45–48 inches long
Charlotte Quilters’ Guild Cancer comfort quilt 40–42 inches wide × 48–50 inches long
Charlotte Quilters’ Guild USO quilt 55–60 inches wide × 65 inches long
Charlotte Quilters’ Guild Hospice veteran lap quilt 36 inches wide × 36, 42, or 48 inches long
Quilts of Valor Veteran or service member Ideal size approximately 60 × 80 inches; finished quilt must be at least 55 × 65 inches and no larger than 72 × 90 inches

Dimensions above come from each named organization’s own recommendations or specifications. Before cutting fabric, confirm the current size request with the group that will receive or distribute the quilt; a pattern’s size options may not match every program.

Check the donation rules before you sew

Requirements are not interchangeable between organizations. For example, Citrus Belt Quilters recommends quality 100% cotton and excludes polyester, velvet, corduroy, metallic or glitter fabrics, and embellishments such as buttons, ribbons, sequins, and beads. It also advises against food, religious, or holiday prints, except for quilts designated for Santa Claus Inc. The guild does not accept tied quilts: they must be machine quilted. Completed quilts must carry a Citrus Belt Quilters label, supplied free by its Community Service Team.

Fabric Café Weekend 3-Yard Quilts Book – 8 Fast & Easy Beginner Quilt Patterns | Make a Quilt in a Weekend | Uses Only 3 Yards of Fabric | No Half-Square Triangles | Lap, Twin & Queen/King Sizes
  • Weekend 3-Yard Quilts by Fabric Café features eight fast quilt patterns designed so you can start sewing on Friday and finish your quilt top by Sunday.
  • Each pattern uses three one-yard cuts of coordinating fabric to create a lap-size quilt, making these patterns budget-friendly and perfect for quick projects.
  • Simple construction, minimal seam matching, and easy piecing make these designs ideal for beginner quilters or anyone looking for a relaxing sewing project.
  • All patterns avoid half-square triangles and instead use efficient techniques such as strip piecing and stitch-and-flip construction to save time while sewing.
  • Instructions are included to enlarge each quilt design from lap size to Twin and Queen/King sizes.

Quilts of Valor has separate specifications for quilts intended for veterans and service members. It calls for quality adult-suitable 100% cotton, low-loft batting, and machine or hand quilting rather than tying. Patriotic colors are popular but not required; juvenile, gender-specific, or branch-specific fabric should be avoided unless the intended recipient is known. A label naming the veteran or service member is required. Its care guidance recommends washing with mild, unscented detergent and recommends a color catcher.

Sew4Service is another example of a program that accepts a range of sizes and sorts quilts for agencies. Its size guides cover baby, NICU, lap, throw, and veterans/twin quilts. It asks makers who can launder their quilts before donating to use unscented detergent. These handling suggestions belong to that program; ask the organization you choose how it wants quilts prepared.

Beginner-friendly ways to take part

If you are new to quilting, Charlotte Quilters’ Guild offers free simple kits, accepts donations from members and non-members, and says volunteers can quilt and bind a pieced top that a maker returns. Its suggested turnaround is two to three months, though it says makers may take longer. Sew4Service also describes free local chapter kits and patterns. Kit availability and participation arrangements depend on the local organization, so contact it before planning around one.

A practical order for choosing and making a quilt

  1. Choose the recipient or program. Decide whether you are making a NICU, child, lap, wheelchair, veteran, or other quilt.
  2. Confirm current requirements. Ask the organization for its size, fabric, quilting, label, washing, and delivery instructions. Requirements can differ even for similar recipient groups.
  3. Select a pattern and finished size. Check that the pattern includes the requested dimensions or can be adapted without violating its instructions.
  4. Check supplies before buying. Review the pattern’s yardage and the recipient’s material rules. Some designs use scraps or precut strips, and some organizations offer kits; do not assume a purchase is necessary.
  5. Finish and prepare the quilt as requested. Add any required label and follow the chosen program’s quilting and laundering directions before arranging delivery.
