To find and set a free desktop wallpaper, choose an image that suits your display’s resolution, aspect ratio, and composition, then check the image provider’s license before downloading. Set it through your operating system’s wallpaper settings: Windows offers background and theme controls, while Mac users can open System Settings and choose Wallpaper.
A free download does not automatically mean an image is free to reuse, share, or use commercially. Check the source’s terms for your intended use.

Choose an image library or the original creator’s page, and inspect the image’s available download sizes and license. Unsplash is one source for downloadable images. Its help page describes selecting a download arrow from the full image view and choosing small, medium, large, or original size. If none is suitable, Unsplash suggests contacting the photographer.
Windows users can also browse built-in themes in Settings > Personalization > Themes and select Browse themes to reach Microsoft Store. Microsoft describes a Windows theme as a combination of desktop background pictures and other interface settings. For a standalone image, use the Background controls in Personalization; labels may vary by Windows build.

How to choose the right wallpaper
There is no single ideal pixel dimension for every monitor. Check the target display’s resolution and aspect ratio, then choose the largest suitable image that avoids unnecessary upscaling. Also consider whether cropping will hide the subject and whether the image’s colors and detail leave desktop icons readable.

Windows 11 design guidance notes that backgrounds crop differently at different aspect ratios and recommends considering how an image works with the centered Start menu. That guidance is Windows-specific, not a universal rule for every operating system or desktop layout.

Check the image license
Free to download does not mean every image on the web is free to reuse. Check the provider’s license and any image-specific restrictions before sharing an image or using it commercially.
Unsplash says its images can be downloaded and used for commercial and non-commercial purposes without permission or required attribution, though attribution is appreciated. Its license prohibits selling images without significant modification and compiling images to replicate a similar or competing service. These terms apply to Unsplash; do not assume other wallpaper sites offer the same rights. Review the provider’s current license before reuse.

How to download a wallpaper
- Open the image’s full view on its source page.
- Check the source’s license for your intended use.
- Choose a download size that suits your display. On Unsplash, the documented choices are small, medium, large, and original.
- If the available sizes do not meet your needs, contact the photographer or choose another image.
How to set a desktop wallpaper
Windows
For a theme, open Settings > Personalization > Themes, choose a default theme or select Browse themes, then select a theme to apply it. For a standalone image, use Settings > Personalization > Background. Individual image controls and menu labels can vary by Windows version. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Wallpaper.
- To add an image file, scroll to Your Photos, choose Add Photo > Choose File, and select the image.
- Alternatively, drag an image file to the wallpaper thumbnail, or in Finder Control-click a saved image and choose Set Desktop Picture.
Apple’s Wallpaper settings also include built-in images, colors, shuffle options, and controls for using a wallpaper across Spaces and displays.

Not necessarily. Check the image provider’s license and any image-specific restrictions. Unsplash’s terms permit commercial and non-commercial use subject to its stated conditions; do not apply those terms to other providers.
