For an Earth image you can layer over another design, start with Wikimedia Commons’ Blue Marble transparent.png, which the file page identifies as a transparent Apollo 17 Earth image. For NASA’s broader selection of free global imagery, use its Blue Marble collections—but check each file’s background, dimensions, format, and credit guidance before downloading.
Choose the right kind of Earth image
“Earth PNG” can mean either a globe cutout with transparent pixels or a complete image of Earth with an opaque background. They are not interchangeable: a full image may look like a globe but still place a rectangular background over your design. If you need to layer the Earth over a color, illustration, or slide, confirm that the specific file has transparency.
- Transparent globe: suited to compositing over another background. Wikimedia Commons’ file page identifies its Apollo 17 Blue Marble PNG as transparent.
- Clouded global image: NASA’s Blue Marble: Clouds is a large image mosaic, not necessarily a transparent cutout.
- Map-like global composite: Blue Marble: Next Generation offers monthly imagery that may suit maps and other designs better than a photographic globe.

Transparent Apollo 17 Blue Marble
Download from the Wikimedia Commons file page. The record names NASA as the author and describes the image as public domain in the United States because it was solely created by NASA. Those are statements on that file record, not a blanket rule for all Earth images or every jurisdiction. Review the page’s rights details for your intended use.
NASA Blue Marble: Clouds
NASA Visible Earth’s Blue Marble: Clouds listing includes a 21,600 × 21,600-pixel PNG, as well as smaller JPEG and TIFF options. The image is a clouded mosaic; do not assume it has a transparent background.

NASA Blue Marble: Next Generation
NASA Visible Earth’s Blue Marble: Next Generation collection offers full-resolution, subsetted, and reduced-resolution images in JPEG, PNG, and GeoTIFF. The collection includes monthly imagery for 2004. NASA describes its monthly base-map composites as having 500-meter spatial resolution and provides global downloads and tiled full-resolution data on its Next Generation base-map page.
NASA’s original Blue Marble imagery
NASA Earth Observatory’s 2002 Blue Marble article describes a true-color global mosaic combining satellite observations of land, oceans, sea ice, and clouds. It says the imagery is freely available to the public and links to full-resolution downloads, with a stated maximum width of 21,600 pixels. NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio Blue Marble page also lists downloadable PNGs and requests credit to NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, with data courtesy of Reto Stockli and NASA Earth Observatory.

Pick a size and format that fits the job
A high pixel count is useful when you need room to crop or print, but it can be unnecessary for a small on-screen graphic. Check the actual pixel dimensions of the file you plan to use, then consider how large it will appear in the finished design. Collection pages may offer several sizes and formats, so choose the individual download rather than assuming every item in a collection has the same specifications.
