You can find free forest pictures on image libraries such as Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay. For commercial projects, check the license on the specific platform and image, then look for people, logos, or artwork that may need separate permission. “Free” describes the platform’s terms; it does not automatically clear every right in a photograph.
Where to find free forest pictures
Search more than one library: results differ in scene, season, and visual style. Try terms that describe both the setting and the look you need, such as woodland, tropical forest, foggy forest, aerial forest, autumn woods, or forest landscape.
Compare the actual image results for subject, composition, and suitability for the intended format. A photograph that works as a presentation background may not fit a small crop or a detailed print. Check the available download options and resolution on the image page; there is no single library established as best for every project.

Check for rights beyond the photo license
A library’s license may grant permission to use the photograph without granting every right associated with its contents. Unsplash notes that identifiable people, brands, or other copyrighted works in an image may require third-party permission for some uses. Pexels similarly flags rights in depicted people, brands, and logos, and warns against suggesting endorsement.

A practical way to choose and document an image
- Define the scene. Decide whether you need, for example, dense woodland, tropical foliage, mist, an aerial view, a particular season, or a wide landscape.
- Compare libraries. Search Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay, then compare the actual results for composition and suitability for your project.
- Check image details. Confirm the available resolution and download option on the image page, and make sure the crop and orientation suit where it will appear.
- Read the applicable license. Check the hosting platform’s current terms and confirm that your specific use is allowed, including any restrictions on resale or redistribution.
- Review what appears in the frame. Look for people, brands, logos, or artwork that could require separate permission or make the use imply endorsement.
- Keep a record. Save the image page and the applicable license information with your project files, especially when the image is for commercial use.
What “free” does not guarantee
A free download does not guarantee that an image suits every purpose, has a particular resolution, or is cleared for every person, brand, or artwork shown. Pixabay’s forest search is a useful browsing route, but any displayed image count is live page information and can change; check the page rather than relying on a count quoted elsewhere.
