For free ribbon graphics, start with Pixabay’s ribbon PNG search, Openclipart’s ribbon search, or Wikimedia Commons. Before using a file, check its format, confirm whether the background is transparent, and read that specific image’s license. A PNG is not automatically transparent, and a free download is not automatically unrestricted for reuse.
Free ribbon graphics on Pixabay
Pixabay’s ribbon PNG search collection labels results free to download and includes searches for styles such as gold, red, Christmas, nature, and transparent ribbons. Collection counts change over time, so use the search page to browse rather than treating a displayed number of results as permanent.
One example, “Ribbon, Banner, Curved Ribbon”, is listed as a free download under the Pixabay Content License. Its page lists PNG and SVG formats and a resolution of 1920 × 960 pixels. That example shows that one design can be offered in both formats; it does not mean every Pixabay result has both formats or a transparent background.
Ribbon clip art on Openclipart
Openclipart’s “Ribbon” asset offers an SVG download and PNG bitmap options in small, medium, and large sizes. This can suit simple clip-art uses when you want a bitmap in a selectable size or a vector file. Check the individual asset page for the formats actually available.
Ribbon files on Wikimedia Commons
Commons hosts individual ribbon files in formats including PNG and SVG. For example, “Template Ribbon.png” is a 930 × 330 pixel PNG. Its licensing panel lists GNU Free Documentation License and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike variants. Another file, “Blank ribbon.svg”, is marked CC BY-SA 3.0. These are file-specific examples, not a single license that applies to every Commons image.

Choose PNG or SVG for your project
| Option | What the cited example offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Pixabay: “Ribbon, Banner, Curved Ribbon” | PNG and SVG; 1920 × 960 pixels; Pixabay Content License. | A ready-to-place bitmap or a vector version of this design. |
| Openclipart: “Ribbon” | SVG plus PNG bitmap options in small, medium, and large sizes; check the asset page for license terms. | Simple clip art when you want a choice of bitmap size or a vector. |
| Wikimedia Commons: “Template Ribbon.png” | PNG; 930 × 330 pixels; licensing panel lists GFDL and CC BY-SA variants. | A bitmap file, provided its license fits your use. |
PNG is a bitmap: it is made of pixels and may become visibly soft if enlarged beyond its resolution. SVG is vector artwork, which can usually be resized without the same pixelation and may be editable in compatible graphics software. Availability and editability depend on the particular file and your software, so verify both before choosing.
Check whether the PNG background is transparent
The file extension alone does not tell you whether a PNG has transparency. Inspect the preview, then open the downloaded image against a contrasting background in your design or image software. A checkerboard in an editor often indicates transparent pixels; a solid white or colored rectangle may be part of the image. The cited asset listings establish that PNG files are available, not that every ribbon PNG has a transparent background.

A quick checklist before placing a ribbon in a design
- Format: Confirm the download is PNG if you need a bitmap, or SVG if you need scalable vector artwork and your software supports it.
- Resolution: Check the pixel dimensions or bitmap size against the space where you will use it.
- Background: Verify transparency in the actual file rather than assuming it from “PNG” or a search filter.
- License: Read the specific file’s terms and follow any attribution, modification, or share-alike conditions.
- Appearance: Check color, shape, and style at the intended size before adding the image to a finished project.
