Free T-shirt quilt patterns vary in finished size and in whether they use uniform squares or accommodate differently sized designs. Measure the usable graphics first: choose a square-grid pattern when they fit a common block size, or a varied-block layout when a uniform square would crop important artwork. Most lightweight to medium T-shirt knits benefit from interfacing before final trimming, though some heavier, dense knits may not.
Free T-shirt quilt patterns and layouts compared
| Pattern or guide | Layout or dimensions | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Riley Blake Designs T-Shirt Quilt | 63 × 75 inches finished; 20 shirt fronts and/or backs; 12½-inch squares in a four-column by five-row setting. The stated block requires a graphic at least 13 inches wide. | The graphics fit a common square size and a conventional grid is preferred. |
| Riley Blake Designs Personalized T-Shirt Quilt | 62 × 72 inches finished. Review the pattern diagrams and instructions for its full block and layout details. | You want to compare a second finished size from the same pattern maker. |
| Moore’s Sewing Tech Talk, “An Easy Layout Method” | Uses varied even measurements and smaller fabric units to make different-size pieces fit a planned layout. | Preserving differently sized graphics matters more than using identical blocks. |
| National Quilters Circle tutorial | Suggests blocks up to 16 inches for adult shirts and about 10–12 inches for child or teen shirts; final size depends on the shirts. | You are planning block sizes around the collection you have. |
These dimensions are pattern examples, not a universal shirt-count-to-quilt-size conversion. Riley Blake says its measurements include a ¼-inch seam allowance and recommends checking its pattern-update information before beginning. Measure the artwork against the pattern’s cutting chart and seam allowance before cutting.
How to choose a layout for different-size designs
- Measure each usable printed design before choosing one block size.
- Choose a uniform grid if most graphics fit the same square and straightforward assembly is the priority.
- Choose a varied-size layout if a common square would crop important designs. Moore’s method combines differently sized blocks with smaller fabric units to fit a planned layout.
- Lay out the panels before sewing. Balance light, medium, and dark areas, and avoid clustering busy prints.
- Compare the planned finished dimensions with how the quilt will be used; do not infer a standard finished size from the number of shirts alone.
Do T-shirts need stabilizer for a quilt?
Most lightweight to medium T-shirt knits benefit from fusible interfacing, which helps prevent stretching out of shape while panels are cut and sewn. Some heavier, dense knits may not need it. Follow the interfacing maker’s directions, and test or protect unusual heat-sensitive fabrics and prints before applying heat.
