The United Nations’ International Day of Friendship is observed every year on July 30. But “Friendship Day” and “Friend’s Day” celebrations do not fall on one universal date: local observances can differ. The UN day recognizes friendship’s role in supporting peace and building bridges between communities.
When is Friendship Day?
The UN’s International Day of Friendship is July 30 each year. The United Nations lists the date under General Assembly resolution A/RES/65/275. The UN’s observance page explains its purpose, while the UN list of international days records the date and resolution.
Other celebrations called Friendship Day or Friend’s Day take place on different dates. The British Council’s learning resource gives July 20 as an example for Argentina, Brazil and Spain, and the first Sunday in August for India and the United States. These are examples, not a complete or definitive current calendar of national customs. The British Council resource provides the examples.

Why did the UN establish the observance?
The UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Friendship in 2011. It recognizes friendship among peoples, countries, cultures and individuals as a way to inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The resolution also encourages young people to take part in community activities that foster international understanding and respect for diversity.
The day is therefore broader than celebrating a particular friendship. It connects personal bonds with dialogue, solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation across cultures. In his 2011 message for the observance, then-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wrote: “The idea of friendship permeates the work and ideals of the United Nations.” Read Ban Ki-moon’s 2011 message.

How do people celebrate Friendship Day?
There is no required ritual. Some people send a card or online greeting, spend time together, or exchange a small gift. The British Council resource mentions books, flowers and friendship bands as examples; none is necessary or universal.
- Send a message: A handwritten card or a simple online greeting can mark the occasion.
- Share time: Arrange a conversation or activity that suits the people involved.
- Give a small token: If a gift feels right, choose something personal and welcome, such as a book or friendship band.
- Make it intercultural: For the UN observance, consider a community activity that brings people from different backgrounds together and encourages understanding.
Choose a gesture according to the recipient and the relationship, rather than treating gift-giving as a rule. The UN’s emphasis on inclusion also makes a thoughtful conversation or shared activity as fitting as a physical present.
