Short answer: Frigidaire makes capable dehumidifiers, but the evidence available does not identify which model was behind the “we tested it” headline. A Tom’s Guide test of an unidentified Frigidaire 50-pint unit reported a drop from 90% to 35% relative humidity in 40 minutes after a shower, at about 60 decibels. Current ENERGY STAR records, meanwhile, list two different Frigidaire 50-pint models and one 22-pint model with materially different efficiency figures. Those facts are useful for judging the range, but they are not proof of performance for one specific machine in your room.
First, identify the exact Frigidaire model
Frigidaire’s dehumidifier lineup is not one interchangeable product. Capacity, efficiency, drainage hardware, controls and physical design can vary by model number. The model number is normally printed on the rating label, packaging, owner’s manual or the product page. Record the complete code, including letters and the final digits, before relying on a review or retailer listing.

This matters because a “50-pint Frigidaire” can refer to more than one current model. ENERGY STAR’s 2026 records list FHDD5033Y1 and FHDP5033Y1 at the same rated capacity and efficiency, while FHDD2233Y1 is a smaller, less efficient unit. A review that does not state its model number cannot safely be applied to all three.
What the current ENERGY STAR records say
The U.S. Department of Energy defines dehumidifier capacity as the amount of water removed in 24 hours under specified laboratory conditions. It is reported in pints per day, not as a promise that your basement will yield that much water every day. ENERGY STAR’s efficiency metric, Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), measures liters removed per kilowatt-hour and includes energy used while the unit is cycled off.

These figures come from ENERGY STAR’s 2026 model records. The two 49.95-pint models share the same listed rating, but that does not establish that they have identical controls, drainage accessories, dimensions or sound levels. The 22.27-pint model is rated for less water removal and has a lower IEF, so it should not be treated as a smaller version of the 50-pint machines without checking its manual and intended room size.
Why a pint rating is not a daily collection guarantee
A rating of 49.95 pints per day is a standardized result at test conditions. Actual collection depends on the room’s temperature, starting humidity, air leakage, moisture sources, thermostat setting, fan operation and whether the compressor cycles. A cool basement can produce less water than the laboratory rating even when its relative humidity is high, while a warm, freshly showered room can produce a short burst of heavy extraction.

If the appliance is placed in a sealed room with a continuous moisture source, it may run frequently. In a connected basement with air leakage, doors opening and closing, or a furnace room adding heat, the same appliance may collect very different amounts.
The DOE test-method change can make old comparisons misleading
ENERGY STAR says the DOE’s updated dehumidifier test procedure took effect with standards in June 2019. The revised procedure lowered the test temperature by 15°F, which can produce a smaller reported capacity than the old method. Therefore, a pre-2019 “50-pint” label and a current “50-pint” label are not automatically equivalent measurements.

When comparing a used unit, an older review or an older store listing with a current model, check which DOE procedure produced the number. Comparing the pint figures alone can make a newer appliance look weaker when the test conditions, rather than the hardware, explain part of the difference.
What the independent 50-pint test actually found
Tom’s Guide tested a Frigidaire 50-pint dehumidifier in a basement bathroom after a shower. In that test, relative humidity fell from 90% to 35% in 40 minutes. Tom’s Guide also reported operation at approximately 60 dB, passive drainage, a removable bucket option, a drain hose not included in the box and a unit weighing about 41 pounds.
Those are observations from Tom’s Guide’s test unit, not measurements made for this article. The report does not establish that the tested appliance was FHDD5033Y1 or FHDP5033Y1, so the result should be read as evidence about one Frigidaire 50-pint product rather than a guarantee for every current model. The humidity result is also a room-specific outcome: a basement bathroom immediately after a shower has a concentrated moisture load that differs from a large, leaky basement or a bedroom.
Tom’s Guide described that tested unit as lacking a smartphone app. Confirm the feature set on the exact model before buying; a missing app may be irrelevant if you use a simple humidity set point, but it matters if remote monitoring is part of your plan.

How to decide whether the capacity fits your space
For a basement or crawl space
Measure the area and note whether the space is open, divided by doors or connected to other floors. A 50-pint class unit is the more plausible starting point for a large or persistently damp area, but the rating alone cannot compensate for groundwater intrusion, plumbing leaks or unsealed foundation walls. Correct those sources first. A dehumidifier controls airborne moisture; it does not repair water entry.
For a bathroom or laundry area
Short, intense moisture events can make a dehumidifier appear extremely fast, as in the 40-minute Tom’s Guide result. Ventilation, an exhaust fan and keeping the door closed during a shower still reduce the load. Place the unit where air can circulate and keep it away from direct splashes.
For a bedroom, office or small room
A 22.27-pint model may be easier to position and may use less electricity in the ENERGY STAR estimate, but its lower capacity and 1.7 L/kWh IEF make it a different class of appliance from the 49.95-pint models. Use the manufacturer’s room guidance and your measured humidity rather than choosing solely by the lowest purchase price.
Drainage determines how much supervision you need
Bucket operation
The bucket is the simplest setup and works where you cannot route a hose. It also creates the most maintenance: the appliance stops when the container is full, so a damp room can become humid again while you are away. Check whether the bucket has a full indicator and a comfortable handle.

Gravity hose
Continuous drainage can reduce emptying, but the drain outlet must be above the receiving drain and the hose must slope downward for its entire run. Tom’s Guide reported that its 50-pint test unit used passive drainage and did not include a drain hose. Verify the outlet size, hose thread and included accessories in the exact model’s manual; “continuous drain” does not mean every household hose will fit.
Pump-assisted drainage
A pump is useful when the only drain is higher than the appliance or far away. Do not infer pump hardware from a model suffix or a retailer photograph. Confirm that the selected unit includes a pump, identify its lift limit and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. If no pump is built in, an external condensate pump may be possible, but that adds another component and another failure point.

Noise, weight and placement are practical performance limits
Approximately 60 dB was the sound level reported by Tom’s Guide for its tested 50-pint unit. That is a useful reference, not a universal Frigidaire specification. Sound varies with fan speed, compressor cycling, floor vibration and the distance or direction of the measurement. For a bedroom or workspace, listen to the exact unit if possible and allow for the louder high-fan setting used during pull-down.
The same report put the test unit at about 41 pounds. A machine of that weight can be moved between rooms, but frequent stair carrying is inconvenient and increases drop risk. Set it on a level, stable surface with the clearances required by the manual. Do not block the intake or exhaust with a wall, stored boxes or curtains, and leave room to remove the bucket.

Controls and automation to check before purchase
- Humidity set point: Confirm that the control lets you select a target humidity rather than offering only a continuous mode.
- Fan choices: Low, medium and high settings affect sound, drying speed and energy use.
- Auto-restart: This is important if power interruptions are common or the unit is unattended.
- Defrost behavior: In cool basements, an automatic defrost cycle can prevent frost from stopping the compressor, though it temporarily changes extraction.
- Full-bucket protection: The unit should stop safely when the container is full.
- Remote access: Tom’s Guide found no smartphone app on its test unit. Check the exact model rather than assuming app support.
A step-by-step way to evaluate the unit in your home
- Record the model number and test method. Photograph the rating label and note whether the capacity is a current DOE/ENERGY STAR figure or an older listing.
- Measure starting conditions. Use a separate hygrometer to record relative humidity and temperature in the intended room before turning the appliance on.
- Choose one drainage configuration. Install the bucket, gravity hose or verified pump exactly as the manual specifies. Check for leaks before leaving the unit unattended.
- Set a realistic target. A target around 45% to 50% relative humidity is commonly comfortable, but follow any guidance for stored materials, instruments or artwork in the room.
- Log elapsed time and readings. Record humidity after 30 minutes, one hour and several hours, along with whether the compressor is running. These readings describe your room, not a laboratory capacity rating.
- Check the collected water and cycling. A small amount after a short test does not prove poor performance; a dry room or cool conditions may simply offer less condensable moisture.
- Inspect airflow and sound at the final position. Make sure the exhaust is unobstructed and note whether vibration travels through the floor or cabinet.
Common failure modes and fixes
The humidity number barely moves
Close doors and windows, confirm the hygrometer is not beside a shower or supply vent, clean the air filter and verify that the compressor is actually starting. If water is entering through a wall, floor or pipe, address that source instead of expecting longer runtime to solve it.
The unit runs but collects little water
Check room temperature, target humidity and airflow clearance. Low temperature can trigger defrosting and reduce short-term collection. A high relative-humidity reading in a cool room does not equal the warm, moisture-rich conditions used for the capacity rating.

The bucket fills overnight
Use a properly sloped gravity hose if a suitable drain is nearby, or a verified pump arrangement if the drain is higher. Confirm that the hose connection is secure and that the unit’s full-bucket shutoff still works.
It is too loud for the room
Move it farther from sleeping or work areas, place it level on a vibration-resistant surface and try a lower fan setting after the initial pull-down. Do not cover the appliance to muffle sound; blocked airflow can cause overheating or poor dehumidification.
Who should consider a Frigidaire 50-pint model?
Consider the 49.95-pint class when the space is large, humidity is persistent and you can provide a safe bucket or continuous-drain setup. The ENERGY STAR records show an IEF of 2.01 L/kWh and estimated annual energy use of 520 kWh for both FHDD5033Y1 and FHDP5033Y1, but those values do not answer questions about noise, hose inclusion, pump hardware or app support.
Consider the 22.27-pint FHDD2233Y1 when the room and moisture load are smaller and its lower capacity is sufficient. Its listed IEF is 1.7 L/kWh and estimated annual energy use is 276 kWh, figures that should be compared only with similarly tested products and under the same assumptions.
Verdict
The available evidence supports a qualified conclusion: a Frigidaire 50-pint dehumidifier can reduce very high humidity quickly in the right room, and current 50-pint models carry credible ENERGY STAR ratings. The headline’s “we tested it” claim cannot be assigned to a specific Frigidaire model without the model number and original test record. Buy by verified model, current test-method rating, drainage plan and placement—not by the generic 50-pint label or by another publication’s result alone.
