The Fused Circles Table Runner is a quilt pattern—not a listing for a ready-made runner. American Patchwork & Quilting’s project finishes at 22-1/2 × 42-1/2 inches and combines fused fabric-circle appliqué with pieced borders. The instructions use lightweight fusible web to attach the circles, then secure their edges with a narrow zigzag stitch.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplicity pattern includes everything needed for a well set table with instructions for (7) sewing templates. Patterns include chair cushions, tablecloths, place mats, runners, and napkins.
- Each dining accent piece comes in one size only. Runners and tablecloths have instructions for various lengths depending on table size.
- Table runner comes in two different styles with matching place mats. Tablecloth pattern can also be made to match these accent pieces.
- Washable fabrics such as cotton and broadcloth are recommended, as pieces will be used where food and drink is served.
- For patterned material, purchase extra to line up seams with stripes, polka dots, or other designs.
What the pattern makes
Published by American Patchwork & Quilting on June 14, 2013, the project was inspired by Bubble Runner, designed by Monica Solorio-Snow of Happy Zombie; Laura Boehnke is credited as quilt tester. The pictured version has a Zen garden-like look, using Asian prints from Hoffman California Fabrics’ Hanako’s Treasures collection. That collection is an inspiration for the example, not a required or confirmed-current fabric source. See the original Fused Circles Table Runner pattern.
The design places overlapping circles in assorted dark and light prints on a cream foundation. A fuchsia inner border frames the appliqué, followed by an outer border pieced from light and dark squares; black print is used for the binding.

How the fused-circle construction works
The defining technique is to fuse fabric circles to the cream foundation and stitch around their edges. The pattern calls for lightweight fusible web but does not name a brand or specify machine settings.

- Prepare the fusible web. Trace each paper pattern onto the web, leaving 1/2 inch between tracings. Cut about 1/4 inch outside each traced line. To reduce stiffness, the instructions also say to cut 1/4 inch inside each piece and discard the centers.
- Fuse and cut the circles. Following the web manufacturer’s directions, press the web to the wrong side of the designated fabric and let it cool. Cut the fabric circles on the drawn lines, then peel off the paper.
- Cut the foundation and border pieces. Cut 2-1/2-inch squares from the dark and light prints, along with 11 each of circle patterns A, B, C, and D from the remaining dark and light prints. Cut the cream foundation rectangle to 22 × 42 inches.
- Arrange and secure the appliqué. Arrange the A–D circles on the foundation, overlapping them as desired, and fuse them in place according to the fusible-web directions. Trim the foundation to 17-1/2 × 37-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Use a narrow zigzag and matching embroidery thread to stitch around each appliqué.
- Add the inner border. Attach the 1-inch fuchsia strips to the long edges first, then add the strips to the remaining edges.
- Piece and attach the outer borders. Each long strip uses 10 light and 9 dark 2-1/2-inch squares and measures 2-1/2 × 38-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Each short strip uses six dark and five light squares and measures 2-1/2 × 22-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Sew on the long strips first, followed by the short strips.
- Quilt and bind. Layer the top, batting, and backing; baste and quilt as desired. Finish by binding with strips cut from the black print.
Choices the pattern leaves to the maker
- Print selection: The specified quantities divide the prints into dark black-and-green and light tan-and-gold groups. Choose prints that retain a clear light-dark contrast; the original fabric collection is not stated as a requirement.
- Circle layout: The pattern allows the circles to overlap as desired, so their placement can vary while keeping the fused appliqués within the foundation area.
- Quilting design: “Quilt as desired” leaves the quilting pattern to the maker. The instructions do not prescribe a design, difficulty rating, time estimate, or care instructions.
