If you need several identical frames, price the complete quantity as a multi-frame pack before buying anything individually. Kristi Linauer’s February 27, 2023 home-gym project is a useful example: she needed six 16 × 20-inch frames with mats for 11 × 14-inch prints, yet the individual frames she bought cost substantially more than the retailer’s six-frame online pro pack. Those figures are historical, not a promise about current stock or pricing, but the buying lesson remains practical.
The project: six framed prints in a precise grid
Linauer wanted a symmetrical, tailored arrangement on the entry wall of her home gym. Her preference was for gallery walls in which every frame is the same size and style, rather than an eclectic collection of mismatched shapes. She had six prints made at 11 × 14 inches and therefore needed six larger frames that could hold each print behind a mat.

That distinction matters: an 11 × 14 print is the artwork size, while 16 × 20 is the frame size. A listing that says “11 × 14 frame with mat” may be describing the intended print or mat opening rather than the frame’s outside dimensions. Confirm both measurements before ordering.
Her selected frame was named Home by Studio Decor Natural Walnut Stain 11 × 14 Frame with Mat. In the project description, Linauer treats it as a 16 × 20-inch frame with a mat sized for an 11 × 14-inch print. Preserve that distinction when comparing listings; otherwise, a frame can appear to match on paper while being too small for the finished arrangement.

Why the six-frame pack changed the calculation
Linauer bought individual frames on sale and reports paying $33.74 per frame. Six of those purchases totaled $202.44. She later found an online six-frame pro pack listed at $121.44, which works out to $20.24 per frame. The difference across the six-frame requirement was approximately $80.

These are Linauer’s reported prices from February 2023, not current prices from the retailer. Inventory, promotions, pack contents and regional terms can change. The durable point is the method: multiply the individual price by the number of frames you actually need, then compare that total with every available pack size.

Linauer’s recommendation was direct: “If you’re looking for frames for a gallery wall, I suggest looking there first.” In context, “there” meant the retailer’s online multi-frame pack offers. She also noted that packs were not offered for every frame, so finding one for a particular style or finish is not guaranteed.
How to compare a pack with individual frames
Use this sequence whenever a wall requires repeated frames. It prevents a low-looking unit price from hiding a quantity mismatch or a different mat configuration.

- Count the finished positions. Linauer’s grid required six, so a six-frame pack matched the project exactly. If your wall needs five, a six-pack may still be useful, but include the unused frame in your cost decision.
- Write down the artwork size and the outer frame size separately. Here, the prints were 11 × 14 inches and the frames were 16 × 20 inches.
- Check the mat opening. The mat must be intended for the print size, not merely described with the same numbers as the frame’s exterior.
- Match the design specification. Compare finish, profile, color, orientation and whether a mat is included. A cheaper pack is not equivalent if it changes the visual rhythm of a grid.
- Calculate both totals. Multiply the current individual price by the required quantity and compare it with the current pack total. Do not use Linauer’s 2023 figures as a present-day quote.
- Verify the listing before checkout. Confirm pack count, dimensions, mat opening, shipping or pickup terms and return conditions on the retailer’s current page. Linauer’s account does not establish any of those current details.
A simple worksheet can contain four lines: number of frames, individual total, pack total and effective per-frame price. Add a fifth line for delivery or pickup charges when those costs differ between buying routes.
Getting the proportions right for an 11 × 14 print
The 16 × 20 outer size gives the six pieces a consistent footprint on the wall, while the mats create a border around each 11 × 14 print. For a grid, consistency is more noticeable than it is in a loose salon-style arrangement: a single frame with a different outside dimension can interrupt the horizontal and vertical lines.
Before purchasing, measure a sample print and compare it with the stated mat opening. Do not assume that “11 × 14 with mat” means the visible opening is exactly 11 × 14; product listings can use the artwork size, the mat size or the frame size in their headline. The relevant question is whether the supplied mat is intended to present an 11 × 14 print inside a 16 × 20 frame.
Also decide whether all six prints will be oriented the same way. The source project is described as a six-picture grid, so the visual plan depends on repeated dimensions and aligned edges. A frame that can be rotated may still have a mat whose opening is directional; inspect the actual configuration rather than relying only on the outer measurement.

Matching the frame to the room
Linauer chose a natural walnut-stain finish because she wanted a darker walnut tone that coordinated with a walnut WaterRower and the room’s black-and-walnut palette. This is a useful example of choosing frames as part of the room’s material scheme rather than treating them as isolated holders for prints.
For a neat grid, select one finish and keep it consistent across all positions. Compare the frame color in the room where it will hang, especially if the wall receives different light during the day. If a retailer shows several walnut variations, use the same finish name and product line for the entire quantity instead of assuming two “walnut” labels will look alike.

The finished room needed a darker walnut appearance than the natural finish supplied on every frame. Linauer stained two frames with Behr oil-based Dark Walnut stain so the set would coordinate more closely with the room.

Her account describes removing the glass and mat before applying the stain. She also says she did not sand first because, in her observation, the frames did not feel as if they had a protective coating. That is a report of her experience with these particular frames, not a universal preparation rule. Frame materials, factory finishes and stains vary, so the account does not establish that another frame can be stained successfully without testing or preparation.
If you follow the same general idea, treat it as a customization decision made after confirming what the frame is made of and how it is finished. Keep the glass and mat out of the work area, and do not assume an oil-based stain is compatible with every frame surface. Linauer’s post does not provide a stain comparison, compatibility chart, curing schedule or product-safety guidance, so those details should be obtained from the specific frame and stain manufacturers before starting.

There is also a visual trade-off: staining only two of six frames creates intentional variation, while staining all six would produce a uniform set. Linauer used the two darker frames to solve a room-coordination problem; copy the color goal only if it suits your own wall and accept that the result is a personal project choice.
Print-making and other retailer context
For the 11 × 14 artwork, Linauer mentions using CVS for one-hour prints. She also associated IKEA with good frame prices, but explained that an IKEA location was not conveniently near her home in Waco. Those details describe her 2023 shopping circumstances, not a current retailer ranking or a guarantee of today’s print turnaround, frame selection or price.
When planning your own wall, separate the print decision from the frame decision. Order or produce one print first, place it in a candidate mat, and check the border and crop before committing to six. A six-frame pack only saves money if all six frames work with the artwork you intend to display.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing unlike dimensions: Treating an 11 × 14 print as though it were an 11 × 14 outer frame can leave no room for the mat or frame profile.
- Buying one at a time without checking packs: A sale price on an individual frame can still exceed a multi-frame total, as Linauer’s historical figures demonstrate.
- Assuming every style has a pro pack: Linauer specifically noted that multi-frame packs were not available for every frame.
- Using an old price as a current quote: The $33.74, $202.44, $121.44 and $20.24 figures belong to her February 2023 account.
- Ignoring the mat opening: A matching outer size does not prove that the included mat presents an 11 × 14 print correctly.
- Treating a personal finishing method as a guarantee: Linauer’s no-sanding observation applies to her frames and does not prove that another finish will accept stain.
- Mixing finishes unintentionally: A symmetrical grid makes small changes in color or profile easy to see, so document the exact finish before adding a replacement frame.
A practical checklist before you order
- Six finished positions, or the exact quantity your wall requires.
- 11 × 14-inch print size recorded separately from the 16 × 20-inch outer frame size.
- Mat opening confirmed for the print.
- One frame style, profile and walnut color selected for the grid.
- Individual total calculated alongside any multi-frame pack total.
- Current stock, pack count, delivery or pickup terms and return conditions checked on the live listing.
- One sample print tested in the chosen frame and mat before the full purchase.
- Any color-change plan treated as a project-specific finish decision, with the glass and mat removed before work.
A six-picture grid rewards exact planning. Measure the artwork, preserve the difference between print opening and outer frame size, and price the complete quantity before placing an order. Linauer’s home-gym wall shows why the pack check deserves to happen before the individual-frame checkout, while her two-frame stain experiment shows how a standard finish can be adapted to a room’s walnut-and-black palette without changing the project’s underlying geometry.
