To Gandhi, the charkha—the spinning wheel—was both a household tool and a symbol of nonviolent economic self-sufficiency. He promoted hand spinning and khadi (hand-spun, hand-woven cloth) as ways to connect everyday work with self-help, village livelihoods and India’s freedom movement. His writings show what he hoped the practice could mean; they do not by themselves establish its overall economic effects.
What did the charkha mean to Gandhi?
Gandhi treated spinning as more than a way to make thread. It was a practical activity people could undertake at home, and an everyday expression of self-help and goodwill. In his account, choosing to spin and wear khadi linked personal conduct to a wider commitment to economic independence and village-centered work.
He made the symbolism explicit in Young India on 8 February 1921: “The spinning wheel is a symbol not of commercial war but of commercial peace.” In Harijan on 13 April 1940, he called it “the symbol of non-violent economic self-sufficiency.” These statements express Gandhi’s ideals, not measured findings about the scale of the charkha’s economic impact.

Why did Gandhi promote spinning khadi?
Khadi connected spinning and weaving to swadeshi—the principle of relying on and supporting local production. Gandhi’s advocacy framed cloth as a means of encouraging self-reliance, widening participation in work and directing economic activity toward villages. He also argued that reviving khadi could provide a basis for broader village industries.
An introduction to Gandhi’s selected writings says he began the khadi movement in 1918 as relief for poor rural populations, and describes a later shift toward khadi serving villagers’ own needs. That is the introduction’s account of the movement’s development, rather than a complete independently established chronology. Gandhi’s arguments explain the purpose he assigned to spinning; they do not prove that hand spinning alone could solve India’s economic or political challenges.

How did the spinning wheel become a political symbol?
The charkha made Gandhi’s political ideas visible through an ordinary, repeatable act. Spinning at home and wearing khadi could signal participation in a national project without requiring a person to hold office or take up arms. The wheel thus joined individual practice to collective purpose: economic self-help, nonviolence and independence from reliance on outside cloth.
A Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya page attributes to Gandhi the statement, “The Charkha is an outward symbol of truth and nonviolence.” Read that short quotation as the museum’s attribution, not as a substitute for its fuller original-text context.

What the historical sources establish—and what they do not
Gandhi’s selected writings document how he described hand spinning, khadi and village industry, and why he believed they mattered. They support an account of the charkha’s intended ethical and political significance. They do not independently quantify how much spinning contributed to household income, employment or national economic change. No sufficiently verified named statistic is available here to state such an effect as a measured fact.

A present-day spinning wheel is best understood as a craft tool; modern designs should not automatically be described as Gandhi’s own wheel or as verified replicas. Anyone choosing a wheel for cotton spinning can compare its form, portability, intended skill level and suitability for cotton. No particular current product has been evaluated here.

Likewise, a present-day item labeled khadi should not be assumed to be hand-spun and hand-woven solely because of the label. Establishing that provenance requires information about the specific product and its maker.
