GIMP 2.10.32, released on June 14, 2022, was a substantial compatibility and reliability update rather than a major interface redesign. Its most useful changes were support for 8- and 16-bit CMYK(A) TIFF imports, BigTIFF files, JPEG XL importing, improved DDS export, safer PSD metadata handling, and more robust XCF recovery.
It is now a legacy release. GIMP’s official downloads page lists GIMP 3.2.4 as the current stable version, while GIMP 2.10.38 is the latest release in the older 2.10 series. The details below remain useful if you are maintaining an older system, plug-in setup, or project.
What was GIMP 2.10.32?
GIMP 2.10.32 was a stable release in the GIMP 2.10 branch. The project described it as being particularly heavy on bug fixes while also improving image-format support. Some of the work had been backported from the 2.99 development branch and incorporated newer versions of the underlying image-processing components, including GEGL 0.4.36 and babl 0.1.92.

For photographers, artists, designers, and game-asset creators, the release mattered most when opening or exporting files from other applications. It improved compatibility at the edges of common workflows instead of changing how GIMP fundamentally worked.

The biggest changes in GIMP 2.10.32
CMYK(A) TIFF import
GIMP 2.10.32 can import 8-bit and 16-bit CMYK(A) TIFF files. That is useful when examining or processing existing print assets, scans, and other images created in a CMYK workflow.
However, this should not be confused with the addition of a complete Photoshop-style CMYK-native editing mode. The precise improvement is CMYK(A) TIFF import at those bit depths—not full, end-to-end CMYK editing throughout GIMP.
BigTIFF import and export
The release added BigTIFF support for both importing and exporting. Traditional TIFF files use 32-bit offsets and can run into a limit around 4 GiB; BigTIFF uses 64-bit internal offsets for substantially larger files.

The TIFF export dialog includes a BigTIFF option, and GIMP can suggest BigTIFF or a different compression method when an ordinary TIFF would exceed its size limit.
BigTIFF does not mean that file size is unlimited. Memory, storage, application compatibility, and the capabilities of the program receiving the file still matter.
JPEG XL importing
GIMP 2.10.32 brought JPEG XL import support into the stable 2.10 branch. That allows users to open JXL files directly in GIMP.

The important limitation is that this was import support, not full JPEG XL export support. Export was added later in GIMP 2.10.34, initially with 8-bit lossless output limits. A separately maintained third-party libjxl plug-in also existed, but plug-in behavior and precedence can vary by installation. Do not install 2.10.32 expecting its standard export dialogs to save JPEG XL files.

Game-asset creators gained two practical DDS options:
- Flip the image vertically on export, avoiding a manual flip before saving a texture.
- Visible layers, allowing the rendered result of all visible layers to be exported instead of only the selected layer.
These controls reduce repetitive preparation work and make it less necessary to flatten a layered image merely to export the visible result.
Metadata and reliability improvements
Protection against problematic PSD metadata
Some PSD files contain enormous numbers of Xmp.photoshop.DocumentAncestors metadata tags. The GIMP project reported encountering files with more than 100,000 such tags, a situation that could make the application appear frozen while opening the document.
In version 2.10.32, GIMP begins dropping this tag when more than 1,000 instances are present. This is a targeted safeguard against pathological metadata, not a general promise that every large or complex PSD will open perfectly.

More tolerant XCF recovery
XCF import became more tolerant of invalid or damaged files. In some cases, the importer can salvage more information from a corrupted document than before.

That can help when recovering an older project, but it is not a substitute for backups. Keep versioned copies of important XCF files and save to a new filename when testing whether a damaged document can be recovered.
WebP metadata and thumbnail options
WebP export gained controls for including IPTC data through XMP and for exporting a thumbnail. These options are useful when a WebP file needs to retain more descriptive information than its pixels alone.

- Transparent EPS loading.
- Improved import and export handling for indexed TGA images with alpha.

Text, themes, screenshots, and performance
Localized glyph variants
The Text tool gained support for localized glyph variants. Depending on the font and language, this can allow a character to use the appropriate regional or language-specific form without requiring a separate manual workaround.
Theme and icon refinements
GIMP 2.10.32 included improvements to themes and icons. These are quality-of-life refinements rather than a redesigned interface or a transition to the GIMP 3 architecture.
Improved Windows screenshots
Windows users received an improved screenshot facility. The change is useful for capturing working areas or screen content without relying entirely on an external utility.

Performance work in GEGL, babl, and ctx
The release incorporated optimization work in GIMP’s image-processing stack. Changes in babl addressed SIMD discovery problems that had been particularly troublesome on Windows, while automatic lookup-table creation could improve some pixel-format conversions. SIMD-related work also covered x86_64 and ARM NEON components.
These changes do not guarantee a universal speed increase. The benefit depends on the operation, image format, processor, operating system, and build. A conversion-heavy workflow may improve more than a workflow dominated by unrelated filters or disk access.
What GIMP 2.10.32 did not add
- It did not create a complete CMYK editing workflow. The headline CMYK change was 8- and 16-bit CMYK(A) TIFF import.
- It did not provide the later JPEG XL export workflow. That arrived in 2.10.34 with stated limitations.
- It was not a major interface overhaul. The most important work concerned formats, metadata, recovery, and maintenance.
- It did not mark the GIMP 3 transition. GIMP 3 is a separate major-generation release with its own compatibility considerations.
Who benefited most?
Photographers and archivists
BigTIFF support is the standout improvement for people working with exceptionally large scans, stitched images, scientific imagery, or high-resolution masters that approach the ordinary TIFF size limit.
Game developers and modders
The DDS export controls make texture preparation faster, especially when a pipeline requires vertical flipping or a composite of all visible layers.
Photoshop users
The PSD metadata safeguard can prevent a particular kind of apparent hang caused by huge DocumentAncestors blocks. It does not make GIMP a perfect replacement for Photoshop’s complete PSD feature set.

Print-oriented users
CMYK(A) TIFF import makes it easier to inspect and process existing CMYK assets. Users who require a full prepress workflow should verify color-management, separations, proofing, and export requirements independently rather than treating this release as full CMYK support.

Casual editors
For occasional crops, retouching, painting, and web graphics, the release offers useful maintenance improvements but few reasons to seek out this exact old version.
Should you install GIMP 2.10.32 now?
Usually, no. New users should start with the current version listed on GIMP’s official downloads page. As of 2026, that page lists GIMP 3.2.4 as current stable. The latest 2.10-series release in the project’s official coverage is GIMP 2.10.38, released on May 5, 2024.
You might intentionally need a 2.10 build when an older plug-in, script, operating system, or production pipeline has not been tested with GIMP 3. In that case, prefer the newest suitable 2.10 release rather than 2.10.32 unless a project specifically requires this version. The official 2.10 archive is the appropriate place to locate legacy packages.

Where to download it safely
Use GIMP’s official website and its linked distribution channels. At the time of the original release, packages included a Linux Flatpak, a Windows installer, and a macOS DMG. A separate Intel and Apple Silicon package for GIMP 2.10.32 followed on December 2, 2022; it was not part of the initial June release announcement. Details are available in the project’s Apple Silicon notice.
Avoid unofficial “GIMP Pro” or “GIMP Premium” installers and misleading download listings. The project has specifically warned users about potentially unsafe or confusing packages, including some Microsoft Store listings; see its Microsoft Store warning. Newer Windows distribution requirements should not be retroactively attributed to 2.10.32: current Microsoft Store packages have platform requirements described in GIMP’s 2026 compatibility notice.
Verdict
GIMP 2.10.32 was a strong, format-focused maintenance release. BigTIFF, CMYK(A) TIFF import, JPEG XL importing, DDS controls, PSD metadata protection, and XCF recovery made it especially valuable for specialized workflows. But it was not a full CMYK editing overhaul, did not initially export JPEG XL, and is no longer the version most users should install. Treat it as an important historical step in the 2.10 series, not as the best current GIMP download.
