GIMP 3.0 was a major upgrade, but it is no longer the newest release. The current stable line is GIMP 3.2, with GIMP 3.2.4 released on April 19, 2026. It keeps the 3.0 foundation—GTK3, improved HiDPI and tablet support, native Wayland support, non-destructive filters, stronger color management, better format handling and a new plug-in architecture—while adding linked and vector layers, brush and text improvements, and further stability fixes.

That makes GIMP one of the strongest free, open-source raster editors for painting, photo work and compositing. It is not a drop-in replacement for every Photoshop workflow: complex PSD documents, Adobe collaboration, proprietary plug-ins, cloud services and generative AI remain important dividing lines.

GIMP 3.0, announced on March 16, 2025, was a platform and workflow upgrade rather than a cosmetic redesign. The project describes it as the result of seven years of active development. Its technical changes affect everyday work on high-resolution displays, tablets, Linux desktops, filters, file exchange and scripting.

A modern GTK3 interface
Moving from GTK2 to GTK3 brought better HiDPI scaling, improved tablet-input support, CSS-based themes, native Wayland support and continued X11 support. It also allowed the project to fix interface problems that could not be backported to GTK2. The result is a more modern foundation for Linux and high-resolution screens, not a Photoshop-style rearrangement of every tool and shortcut.
Non-destructive filters
In GIMP 2.10, applying many filters permanently merged the result into a layer. GIMP 3.0 lets supported filters remain editable and removable, so you can revisit settings without repeatedly degrading the source layer. This is a significant change for retouching and painting experiments, but it is not a complete equivalent of Photoshop’s adjustment layers, smart objects or generative-editing system.
Formats, color and scripting
GIMP 3.0 improved color management and file-format support, including Photoshop-specific metadata in JPEG and TIFF files such as clipping paths, guides and layers. Its updated API supports plug-ins and scripts in C and Script-Fu, with JavaScript, Lua and Vala bindings available on platforms that build them; Lua was described by the project as experimental because of instability. The API change is powerful for automation, but it also breaks compatibility with some older extensions.
What GIMP 3.2 adds
Readers installing GIMP today should use the 3.2 branch rather than stopping at the original 3.0 release. GIMP 3.2 extended the non-destructive model and restored or refined features affected by the major-version transition.

Linked and vector layers
Linked layers can incorporate an external image into a composition and transform it without losing the original quality. Vector layers provide a more flexible way to retain vector content in a document. Together with the 3.0 filter model, they make iterative layouts and illustrations easier to revise, although they still are not identical to Photoshop smart objects and adjustment layers.
Brushes, text and formats
The release added new MyPaint brushes, text-editor improvements, Overwrite Paint Mode, additional non-destructive-filter improvements and support for more image and palette formats. Stability and regression fixes addressed problems exposed after the 3.0 transition.
The version to install
GIMP 3.2.4 is the latest stable patch release identified by the project in the supplied release record, dated April 19, 2026. Download it from the official downloads page, which provides Windows universal installers for x86 and ARM, Microsoft Store packages, macOS packages for Intel and Apple Silicon, and Linux Flatpak, AppImage and Snap packages. Source tarballs are also available. Distribution repositories can lag behind upstream, so check the version shown by your package manager.
Is GIMP a real Photoshop replacement?
The useful answer depends on the work you do, not on a feature-count contest. GIMP’s own documentation presents it as a paint program, photo-retouching tool, digital-art application, batch-processing system, image renderer and image-format converter (official introduction).

The project’s FAQ notes that direct Photoshop comparisons are natural, while also explaining that GIMP is not primarily organized around competing feature-for-feature. “Best” therefore means best for a particular set of priorities: free software, local editing, Linux support, extensibility and raster work favor GIMP; exact Adobe compatibility, collaboration and AI favor Photoshop.
PSD compatibility: opening is not preserving
Improved PSD handling does not guarantee identical rendering. Photoshop-specific layer effects, smart objects, adjustment layers, masks, text behavior and plug-ins may be altered, unavailable or flattened when a file is opened in GIMP.
- Keep the original PSD and work on a copy.
- Test the actual documents exchanged with collaborators, not just a simple sample file.
- When appearance is critical, request a flattened PNG or TIFF export alongside the editable PSD.
- Compare the file in Photoshop or another known-compatible editor before delivering production work.
- Rebuild unsupported effects manually in GIMP rather than assuming they survived import.
Plug-ins and scripts: the main migration hazard
GIMP 3 changed its API and plug-in architecture. GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts are not automatically compatible, and a favorite extension may need a new build or a port.

- Check each developer’s documentation for GIMP 3 support.
- Install GIMP 3 alongside the older version if the workflow is business-critical.
- Test extensions and duplicate documents before moving production files.
- Do not copy an entire old configuration directory into the new installation; migrate settings selectively.
If a plug-in stops working, first disable third-party extensions and confirm that the stock installation works. Then install a GIMP 3-compatible build, or keep GIMP 2.10 for legacy projects.

Other practical limitations
32-bit systems
GIMP 3.2 ended distribution of official 32-bit binaries. This affects legacy Windows systems and older hardware. It does not by itself prove that every 32-bit system is incapable of running a source-built version, but users should not expect an official 32-bit installer.
Package differences on Linux
Flatpak, AppImage, Snap and distribution packages can differ in sandbox permissions, update timing and integration with themes or desktop files. The AppImage documentation notes that tools such as gimp-console* and gimp-debug-tool* require extracting the image first:

Regressions after a major release
Major releases expose edge cases across many hardware combinations, file types and extensions. The 3.2 series included stability and regression fixes; the 3.2.2 release specifically fixed a problem in which certain filtered layers inside groups stopped rendering. Use the latest patch release, keep backups of XCF, PSD and source assets, and report reproducible problems to the project’s issue tracker.
How to switch from Photoshop safely
- Define your must-have workflow. List the file types, plug-ins, fonts, color profiles, scripts and collaboration steps you use every week.
- Install from the official source. Use GIMP’s downloads page and choose the package for your operating system and architecture.
- Back up before migrating. Preserve original PSDs, XCF files, linked assets, brushes, fonts and the existing GIMP configuration.
- Test representative files. Use duplicates containing masks, text, effects, smart objects and large layer groups.
- Verify extensions. Install only GIMP 3-compatible plug-ins and scripts, one at a time.
- Run both versions when necessary. Keep the older installation available for projects that depend on legacy extensions or exact PSD rendering.
- Standardize hand-offs. Agree whether collaborators exchange editable PSDs, layered exports or flattened PNG/TIFF files.
Who should choose GIMP?
- Photographers and creators doing local correction, compositing, retouching and export.
- Digital painters who want a free, scriptable raster workspace with tablet support.
- Linux users who need a maintained desktop editor.
- Students, hobbyists and small teams avoiding recurring software costs.
- Automators who value scripting, batch conversion and open formats.
- Anyone prioritizing GPL-covered free software and reduced vendor lock-in.
Who should stay with Photoshop or consider another tool?
- Agencies that depend on Adobe Fonts, Libraries, Lightroom, Creative Cloud review or established team pipelines.
- Users whose income depends on exact Photoshop PSD fidelity or proprietary plug-ins.
- Artists who require integrated generative fill and other cloud AI features.
- Print-production teams with standardized Adobe color-separation workflows.
- People who need a polished Photoshop-like interface with minimal relearning.
Affinity Photo is a paid desktop alternative for users seeking a more Photoshop-oriented workflow without Adobe’s subscription model; verify its current edition and licensing at Affinity’s official site. Photopea (photopea.com) is convenient for occasional, browser-based PSD work but is less suitable for sensitive files, unreliable internet or very large projects. Krita (krita.org) is often the better fit for illustration, brushwork and animation. Mac users can also evaluate Pixelmator Pro at pixelmator.com/pro.
Bottom line
GIMP 3.0 delivered the long-awaited modernization; GIMP 3.2 and its 3.2.4 patch release are the versions that matter now. For painting, photo editing, compositing, web graphics and batch processing, it is a serious free Photoshop alternative with local operation, extensibility and no subscription requirement. It is not a universal replacement for Photoshop’s proprietary document features, cloud ecosystem, generative AI or commercial support. Try GIMP 3.2.4 on copies of your real files, keep a fallback for legacy projects, and judge it by the workflow you actually need.
