For photo editing, choose GIMP; for digital painting, choose Krita. GIMP is better suited to retouching, compositing, image conversion and automation. Krita can edit photographs, but its tools and interface are built primarily for painting, illustration, comics and animation. Both are free and open source, and you can install both when a project needs photography and hand-painted work.

The deciding question is what you do most: change an image captured by a camera, or create artwork with a brush? GIMP is the better default for the first; Krita is the better choice for the second.
The core difference: photo manipulation or painting
GIMP’s natural starting point is an existing photograph or raster image. You might straighten a horizon, adjust color, remove a blemish, combine exposures or prepare a graphic for the web. Its documentation describes uses that include photo retouching, image creation, batch processing and format conversion (GIMP 3.2 documentation).
Krita’s natural starting point is often a blank canvas, sketch or image you intend to paint over. Its strengths include brush-based illustration, concept art, comics, textures and matte painting. That focus does not mean Krita cannot edit a photograph: it can open raster images, work with layers and apply edits. It means that ordinary photographic corrections are not the center of its design. KDE’s Krita overview describes its painting focus and color capabilities.
Why GIMP is the better choice for most photo editing
Choose GIMP when the job is primarily to improve or transform a photograph. It offers the kinds of tools that make sense for editing existing pixels: cropping and resizing, tonal and color adjustments, selections, masks, cloning, retouching and layered compositing. It can also prepare images for common outputs such as web graphics and standard raster files.

For example, if you want to remove an object, make a subject stand out from its background, combine elements from multiple images or apply a correction to a set of pictures, GIMP is the more appropriate of these two applications. Its plugin and scripting support also make it the more obvious fit for repeatable tasks such as resizing, watermarking or converting files in batches. The exact automation options depend on the plugins and scripts you install.
That is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that every GIMP feature is superior or that it replaces every photography application. A photographer working with camera RAW files may need a separate RAW processor, and someone organizing a large photo library may need cataloging software too.
RAW files: develop first, retouch second
RAW files contain camera data that must be interpreted and rendered before ordinary pixel editing. That development step can include demosaicing, white balance, exposure recovery and lens corrections. GIMP’s official FAQ describes using plugins for RAW processing and names darktable and RawTherapee.
- Open or send the RAW file to a compatible RAW processor such as darktable or RawTherapee.
- Make the development adjustments there, such as exposure and white balance.
- Send or export a rendered image to GIMP for retouching, masking and compositing.
- Export the finished image in the format your next step requires, and keep the original RAW file.
If a RAW file does not open as expected, check that the RAW processor is installed and configured, and that it supports the camera’s file type. Updating the processor or exporting a TIFF from it can be a practical workaround. Neither GIMP nor Krita should be treated as a Lightroom-style catalog and RAW-management replacement on the basis of this comparison.

GIMP’s color and print qualification
For many RGB photo and web tasks, GIMP is a practical choice. But do not assume that it offers the same documented CMYK workflow as Krita. GIMP’s FAQ characterizes improved CMYK support as ongoing work and a roadmap item. If your print job requires specific CMYK handling, confirm the complete color-management and delivery workflow with your printer before committing to an application.
When Krita makes sense for photographs
Krita is a reasonable option for basic raster edits, including cropping, resizing, simple tonal or color changes and layer-based work. It is especially useful when the photograph is a starting point for a creative piece: painting over a portrait, adding illustrated details, building a texture or combining a photo with hand-drawn artwork.
For a photographer who mainly wants to straighten, retouch and export pictures, Krita’s painting-focused interface can feel like extra machinery. Brush controls and illustration tools are valuable when painting is the task; they are less relevant when the job is routine photo correction. If the interface feels awkward for that reason, it may be a mismatch of workflow rather than evidence that the application cannot edit images.
Krita is the stronger painting app
If you draw with a tablet, make concept art or comics, paint textures, or need frame-by-frame animation, choose Krita. Its brush-centered workflow and painting tools are designed around creating artwork, rather than treating painting as one toolset among many. It is also the clearer choice when the project begins on a blank canvas.

GIMP can still handle simple painting, annotations and graphic elements. It has brushes and other paint tools alongside its editing features. But if brush behavior, tablet response, painting ergonomics or animation is central to your work, Krita is usually the more natural fit.
Krita’s listed color support includes RGB and CMYK as well as 8- and 16-bit integer and 16- and 32-bit floating-point channels (KDE’s Krita overview). This is a documented advantage for some print-oriented artwork and high-bit-depth painting workflows, but it does not automatically guarantee that every print-production requirement is met. Confirm the needed profiles, output specifications and handoff process.

Both applications support layered work, but their strengths follow their purposes. GIMP is a natural place to build photo composites, masks and retouched images. Krita is a natural place to build painting and illustration documents, including work that uses its creative and animation features. Neither is the universal winner for every layer-based task.
Keep a native project file while you work:
- XCF is GIMP’s editable project format.
- KRA is Krita’s editable project format.
- OpenRaster (ORA) can be useful for layer interchange where the workflow supports it.
- PSD can help with cross-application exchange, but it is not a guarantee of perfect round-tripping.
- PNG, JPEG and TIFF are useful rendered outputs; they do not replace a layered working file.
PSD files can lose or alter application-specific features such as adjustment layers, editable text, layer effects, masks, vector elements or animation. Keep the original PSD, test a representative file before migrating an archive, and export a flattened TIFF or PNG when you need a predictable visual result. Save your editable work in XCF or KRA as appropriate.

Versions, platforms and cost
As listed on the official download pages checked on August 18, 2026, the current stable releases were GIMP 3.2.4 and Krita 5.3.3. Releases change, so use the projects’ GIMP download page and Krita download page to confirm what is current and available for your system.
GIMP provides builds for GNU/Linux, macOS and Microsoft Windows, with x86_64 and ARM64 options where available. Krita lists Windows, macOS, Linux and Android builds. Its official download page says iPads and iPhones are not supported. The same page lists Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15 and Linux, with 4 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended, plus OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 graphics requirements. Large canvases, many layers, animation frames, drivers and available scratch space can all affect real-world performance.
Both programs are free and open source. GIMP’s FAQ says it can be used commercially; Krita is free software under GPLv3. Krita also has optional paid store editions. Its installation documentation says the store versions are functionally identical to the free website version; they offer options such as automatic updates and provide financial support after store fees. Paying does not unlock extra editing features. If you want the free build, download it from Krita’s official site. On Linux, package versions and maintenance can vary; consult Krita’s current installation documentation for the appropriate method.
Download either application from its official project site rather than a third-party “paid download” listing. The applications being free also does not mean that hardware, training, stock images, cloud storage or separate RAW-management tools are included.

Choose by your actual task
- “I edit camera photos.” Choose GIMP for retouching and compositing; add a RAW processor if you shoot RAW.
- “I need to resize, convert or watermark many images.” Start with GIMP and its scripting or plugin options.
- “I draw with a tablet.” Choose Krita for a painting-centered workflow.
- “I make comics, concept art or textures.” Choose Krita.
- “I need frame-by-frame animation.” Choose Krita.
- “I need CMYK for print.” Krita has clearer documented CMYK support, but check that its workflow meets your printer’s requirements. Do not assume GIMP has equivalent handling.
- “I do photography and illustration.” Use both if the handoff suits the project: GIMP for photo work, Krita for painted elements.
A practical workflow using both
- Develop RAW photographs in darktable or RawTherapee.
- Use GIMP for photo corrections, retouching, masks and compositing.
- Move a suitable image or element into Krita for painted details, illustration or texture work.
- Exchange files using an appropriate format such as PNG, TIFF, PSD or OpenRaster, while remembering that cross-app features may not transfer perfectly.
- Keep the editable XCF and KRA files, as well as the original RAW, separately from the final rendered export.
Not every project needs two editors. The benefit is that each application can handle the part of the work it is designed around, rather than forcing one to serve as the other’s specialty.
