Choose GIMP if you need a free, open-source editor for Windows, macOS, or Linux, or want to build a flexible painting and image-editing workflow. Choose PaintShop Pro if you use Windows and prefer a guided, photography-focused editor with integrated RAW-oriented tools, AI-assisted adjustments, and commercial support. For digital painting alone, neither is a dedicated painting-first application; PaintShop Pro Ultimate’s Painter Essentials is a separate bundled program, not a PaintShop Pro feature.

This comparison covers GIMP 3.2.4, listed by the GIMP project as released April 17, 2026, and PaintShop Pro 2023, the newest version presented on the official product site when checked August 18, 2026. GIMP downloads · PaintShop Pro product page

At a glance: GIMP vs. PaintShop Pro

Question GIMP 3.2.4 PaintShop Pro 2023
Cost and license Free and open-source; no paid tier or trial expiration is indicated by the project. Commercial and described by the official site as subscription-free; a 30-day trial is offered. Check current checkout terms for purchase and license details.
Operating systems GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows, and other platforms. The listed macOS downloads require macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, under the official requirements. No native macOS or Linux edition is presented.
Best fit Cross-platform editing, compositing, extensibility, and users who value open software. Windows photo editing with guided workspaces, built-in photography features, and vendor support.
RAW workflow Can be part of a RAW workflow, often alongside a separate RAW developer; verify support for your camera and setup. Product page emphasizes RAW support and includes AfterShot Lab. A more integrated RAW-oriented workflow is the convenience advantage, not proof of better image quality.
Digital painting Brushes, layers, and extensibility support painting, though GIMP is a general image editor rather than a painting-first specialist. Painting-related extras depend on edition. Ultimate includes the separate Painter Essentials 8 application; it is not built into the core editor.
Plugins and automation Plugins and scripts, with broad customization; compatibility can vary, especially between major versions. Advertises 64-bit third-party plugin support, scripting, and batch capabilities; check individual plugin compatibility.
Photoshop files Opens and saves PSD files, but complex documents may not retain all Photoshop features. Explicitly advertises PSD import and export; this does not guarantee perfect round-tripping.
Native editable project XCF PSPIMAGE
Support Official manual and community resources; no equivalent conventional commercial vendor support is indicated. Commercial support resources, user guides, and tutorials.

What is the practical difference?

GIMP is an adaptable, cross-platform image editor

GIMP is free software: users can use, inspect, modify, and redistribute it under its free-software licensing model. It combines photo manipulation, raster design, compositing, color management, scripting, and third-party extensions. That flexibility makes it useful for illustration and painting workflows as well as photo work, but users may need to assemble tools and learn how its selections, layers, masks, paths, and filters fit together.

GIMP distributes packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Linux users can choose packages including Flatpak and Snap, alongside other installation methods. The official downloads page lists macOS 11 Big Sur or newer for its macOS downloads and Windows packages including x86_64 and ARM64 support. The project warns that it does not provide an Apple App Store package; App Store listings are third-party. Get the installer from GIMP’s official downloads page.

PaintShop Pro is a Windows-first commercial editor

PaintShop Pro focuses on photo editing and graphic-design tasks in a packaged Windows application. Its product pages highlight photography-oriented workspaces, one-click corrections, AI-assisted tools, RAW support, design features, and tutorials. The official site presents PaintShop Pro 2023 as its newest version in the comparison checked August 18, 2026; release status can change, so confirm the current product page before buying.

The product is described as subscription-free and has a 30-day trial. That description does not, by itself, settle every purchase, upgrade, or license restriction: check the current checkout and license terms. Installation and authentication require an internet connection. The Standard and Ultimate editions are not interchangeable: Ultimate adds software and content, and should not be treated as though every extra were part of the core editor. See the Standard edition and Ultimate edition pages.

Which one is easier to learn?

Choose PaintShop Pro for a guided photo-editing start

If you mainly want to correct photos, the photography-oriented workspaces, one-click tools, AI-assisted adjustments, and integrated learning materials may make PaintShop Pro feel more direct. This is a workflow advantage, not a guarantee that every beginner will find it easier: familiarity with other image editors and the task at hand matter.

Choose GIMP if you want control and can learn a more manual workflow

GIMP lets users customize the interface and expand the editor with plugins and scripts. Its tools support detailed work, but the user often has to choose and combine the operations needed instead of relying on a guided correction path. Tutorials can help, though check their version: instructions written for GIMP 2.10 may show obsolete menus or describe extensions that do not work with GIMP 3.x.

Photo editing: compare the job, not a quality label

Everyday corrections and retouching

Both can handle common raster-editing work such as cropping, resizing, color correction, compositing, and retouching. PaintShop Pro’s product pages emphasize photo-oriented workspaces, one-click fixes, and features such as focus stacking and blend-mode previews. GIMP’s project describes photo manipulation, restoration, composites, and color management, and its extension and scripting options can support customized workflows.

Neither editor is inherently guaranteed to produce better-looking results. Source image quality, editing choices, color management, skill, and export settings all affect the result. If you rely on a particular retouching method, plugin, or print workflow, test that exact process rather than choosing on a broad “professional” or “better quality” claim.

RAW development and camera support

A camera RAW file contains sensor data that normally needs developing—adjusting exposure, white balance, color, and other parameters—before it becomes a rendered image such as a TIFF or JPEG. Editing a rendered photo in an image editor is not the same as having a complete RAW-development and cataloging environment.

PaintShop Pro’s official product page says it supports RAW files from more than 800 camera models and includes AfterShot Lab. That makes it the more convenient of these two for a Windows photographer seeking integrated RAW-oriented tools; the figure is the vendor’s stated compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every camera model, file variant, or workflow. Verify your camera’s files before committing.

GIMP can fit into a RAW workflow, but a separate RAW developer may be needed, depending on your camera and setup. Options include darktable and RawTherapee; check their current camera support and packages. Developing in one application and finishing in GIMP adds an application and a handoff to the workflow. The available evidence does not establish that the two editors deliver different image quality from the same source under matched conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batch work, metadata, and catalogs

PaintShop Pro advertises batch-editing and scripting capabilities, while GIMP’s scripts and plugins can automate or extend image tasks. The actual fit depends on the operations you need and whether your existing scripts or extensions support the current version. Neither product should be mistaken for a full photo catalog or digital-asset-management system merely because it can edit or batch-process files.

Layers, masks, compositing, and project editability

Both applications support substantial raster compositing workflows. GIMP’s core strengths include layers, masks, selections, channels, paths, filters, and scripting. PaintShop Pro provides layers and design tools within its photography-focused editor. The useful question is not simply whether a feature exists, but whether the edits remain adjustable in the project you save.

  • Keep an editable master: GIMP’s native project format is XCF; PaintShop Pro’s is PSPIMAGE. Preserve the native project while work is in progress.
  • Separate the image from its export: JPEG is convenient for photos but does not preserve layers or full editing information. PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency; TIFF can suit some print and archival workflows. Choose based on the destination and verify the receiving application’s needs.
  • Do not assume every operation is non-destructive: Masks, editable text, filters, adjustment workflows, and preserved project layers have different consequences. Check whether the particular edit can be changed later in your saved file.

Consult the GIMP 3.2 manual and PaintShop Pro’s Standard feature information for current details. A flattened export is useful for sharing or proofing, not a substitute for keeping an editable master.

Graphic design, text, and painting

Posters, thumbnails, and social graphics

PaintShop Pro’s official materials highlight text, vector editing, templates, alignment and snapping tools, and the Frame Tool, which can help with image-led layouts. GIMP can make raster graphics, composite images, add text, and prepare web exports. For work that depends on precise reusable vector artwork or multi-page layout, neither should be treated as a dedicated vector or publishing application. GIMP identifies Inkscape and Scribus as complementary tools for vector and desktop-publishing work.

Digital painting and drawing

GIMP offers brushes, layers, and customization that can support painting, but its broader role is image editing rather than a painting-first specialist workflow. PaintShop Pro’s product information describes tablet support, including mainstream and WinTab-aware tablets and Windows Ink. The Ultimate edition includes Painter Essentials 8, a separate application; its brush and painting capabilities should not be counted as native PaintShop Pro tools.

If illustration is your main work, compare each editor against a dedicated painting application using your own tablet, pressure settings, brushes, and stabilization needs. Choose based on the drawing experience itself, not on a bundle label.

Plugins, scripts, and automation

GIMP: broad extensibility, with version checks

The GIMP project emphasizes plugins, customization, and scripting in languages including Python and Scheme. This is valuable for users who want to automate repeated work or extend the editor, but community extensions do not all update at the same time. A plugin built for GIMP 2.10 may not run in GIMP 3.x; confirm its stated version support and installation instructions before upgrading.

PaintShop Pro: packaged scripting and third-party plugin support

PaintShop Pro advertises 64-bit third-party plugin support, including Adobe plugins or brushes, Topaz Labs, and Nik Collection by DxO, as well as scripting and batch editing. These claims do not mean every plugin works identically in every version. Check the plugin maker’s supported host, version, and architecture before depending on it.

PSD compatibility and moving projects between editors

Both editors can work with PSD files, but file-format support is not a promise that every Photoshop feature will survive opening, editing, and saving elsewhere. PaintShop Pro explicitly advertises PSD import and export; GIMP’s manual documents its file-format support. Simple layered documents are generally a safer test than files built around specialized features.

  • Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.

Pay particular attention to Smart Objects, adjustment layers, layer effects, advanced masks, linked assets, complex typography, higher-bit-depth workflows, and Camera Raw settings. A feature may be flattened, altered, or unavailable, and a saved PSD may not reproduce the original faithfully in Photoshop. Keep the original, test a representative working file, and share a flattened proof when collaborators need a predictable visual reference.

Platforms, hardware, and support

Operating-system fit

GIMP is the clear native choice in this comparison for Linux and macOS users. PaintShop Pro’s official requirements specify Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit. Running it through virtualization or a compatibility layer is a workaround, not native support, and should be tested with the peripherals and plugins you depend on.

Published requirements and performance

PaintShop Pro’s official requirements list Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, at least 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended for AI features), 3 GB of storage, a 1366×768 display, DirectX 11 or higher, and internet access for installation and authentication. The same page includes Internet Explorer 11 in its requirements text; treat that as vendor-page wording, not a recommendation to use that browser. See PaintShop Pro’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The GIMP download page identifies supported platforms and package architectures but does not provide a directly comparable minimum-RAM figure here. There are no controlled performance results establishing which editor is faster. In practice, image dimensions, layer count, bit depth, available memory, storage speed, drivers, plugin behavior, and native versus compatibility-layer operation all affect responsiveness.

Help and vendor support

GIMP provides an official manual and a community ecosystem; it should not be mistaken for a paid vendor-support service. PaintShop Pro offers commercial support resources, tutorials, and product guidance through its support site. That difference matters if your work depends on a defined support channel rather than community troubleshooting.

Which editor fits your workflow?

Your situation Better starting point Reason
Beginner Windows photographer PaintShop Pro Guided photography-oriented tools, tutorials, and integrated RAW-oriented features may reduce setup.
Linux user GIMP It is the native cross-platform option among these two.
Mac user GIMP The official GIMP downloads include macOS packages; PaintShop Pro is presented for Windows.
Budget-conscious hobbyist GIMP It is free software with no paid feature tier indicated by the project.
Windows user who wants commercial support PaintShop Pro It has vendor support resources and a trial; confirm current purchase terms before buying.
Painter who wants a flexible free editor GIMP, with a painting-first alternative worth testing GIMP supports brush and layer workflows. PaintShop Pro Ultimate’s Painter Essentials is a separate bundled program, not the core editor.
Designer focused on vector illustration or page layout Neither as the only tool Pair an image editor with dedicated vector or publishing software.
Photoshop collaboration with complex PSDs Test both on real files before switching Neither promises complete preservation of Photoshop-specific features.

Can GIMP replace PaintShop Pro, or the other way around?

GIMP can replace many raster-editing tasks

GIMP can be a practical replacement for cropping, retouching, compositing, raster design, and other image-editing jobs—especially when cost, Linux or macOS support, or open-source licensing is decisive. It is not necessarily a one-for-one replacement for PaintShop Pro’s packaged Windows workflow, integrated RAW-oriented tools, guided photography features, or commercial support. Depending on the job, you may add a RAW developer or another specialist application.

PaintShop Pro can replace GIMP for many Windows workflows

For Windows-based photo editing and image-led design, PaintShop Pro can cover many of the same broad raster tasks. It cannot replace GIMP’s cross-platform availability or open-source licensing, and it is not a native option for Mac or Linux users based on its official requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When neither is enough

  • Advanced vector illustration: use a dedicated vector editor such as Inkscape.
  • Page layout and publishing: consider a dedicated layout tool such as Scribus.
  • RAW cataloging and development: evaluate a dedicated RAW workflow, such as darktable or RawTherapee.
  • Professional digital painting, video editing, or collaborative cloud editing: use a tool designed for that specific workflow.

Switching editors: migration checklist

  1. Inventory your work: list XCF, PSPIMAGE, PSD, RAW, and other project files, plus plugins, scripts, fonts, color profiles, and batch jobs.
  2. Keep originals safe: make a separate backup before opening or converting files in the new application.
  3. Test real files: open representative PSDs, TIFFs, PNGs, JPEGs, and camera RAW files; inspect layers, text, masks, effects, and color.
  4. Check dependencies: verify plugin and script support for the exact application version and architecture you plan to use.
  5. Rebuild one complete project: take a representative job from import through editing, export, and any print or web handoff.
  6. Compare output: save a flattened proof, check fonts and color profiles, and confirm batch processing or tablet behavior where relevant.
  7. Retain the old application until the workflow is proven: do not delete it while important native projects still depend on it.
