Yes, researchers have demonstrated methods to bypass Glaze under tested conditions—but that does not mean every protected image or version is defeated. The LightShed research, presented at USENIX Security 2025, describes detecting and removing perturbations from images protected by tools including Glaze and Nightshade. The practical takeaway for artists is that Glaze may raise the effort required for style mimicry, but it is not a permanent or complete barrier.
Glaze is designed to disrupt training-time style mimicry, not to prevent downloading or every kind of image transformation. Treat it as one risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee.
What Glaze is designed to do
Glaze is a University of Chicago SAND Lab project. It applies small image modifications intended to be difficult for people to notice but disruptive to text-to-image models learning an artist’s style. The original Glaze paper describes this as a style cloak and reports study work involving more than 1,000 artists.
Glaze’s stated target is style mimicry when a model is trained or fine-tuned using protected images. It is not a copyright registration, takedown mechanism, watermark, or technical command that prevents someone from downloading an image. The project’s FAQ also says Glaze does not provide consistent protection against image-to-image transformations such as style transfer or inpainting.

What the bypass research demonstrated
The LightShed research, presented at USENIX Security 2025, describes a generalizable method for identifying poisoned images and neutralizing their adversarial perturbations. The researchers report experiments against several perturbation-based protections, including Glaze and Nightshade. This is evidence that such protections can be circumvented in tested settings—not proof that every image, version, model, or workflow can be bypassed.
In experiments detecting Nightshade, the LightShed authors report a 99.98% true-positive rate and a 100% true-negative rate. These are the researchers’ experimental detection metrics; they are not the percentage of all protected artwork that can be bypassed, nor a guarantee of performance on other images or systems.
Earlier results and later bypass research can both be accurate: they concern different methods, periods, and experimental setups. The original Glaze paper evaluated its protection under its own conditions; it could not establish resistance to every attack developed later.

What earlier attack tests showed
The Glaze team’s v2.1 update discusses a noisy-upscaler attack. According to the project’s account of its local tests, the technique significantly affected Glaze V1 and had some impact on V2.0. The team also reported that image quality was often significantly degraded, particularly for faces, textured art, and high-contrast work. These are findings attributed to the project’s tests, not proof that every bypass will damage every image.
Together, the findings show why the exact protection version, attack method, image, and outcome measured matter. Detecting a protected image, removing perturbations, improving mimicry, and preserving image quality are related but distinct results.
What “bypassed” means for artists
Glaze’s modifications are embedded in the image. Once an image is public, an attacker may save it and try new methods to identify or remove those changes. A later update cannot reliably reach copies that have already been downloaded or shared.

That makes this an adversarial problem: defenses and attacks can change, and results depend on the tested conditions. The available research does not establish how often LightShed or similar methods are used outside research, which current models or platforms use them, or how well the latest tool versions resist every attack.

Glaze and Nightshade address different goals
Nightshade is intended to introduce incorrect associations into a model if a protected image enters training data. Glaze targets a model’s ability to learn and reproduce an artist’s style. These are different aims; Nightshade is not a substitute for Glaze’s style-mimicry protection.

What artists can do
- Use Glaze as a risk-reduction step, if its trade-offs work for you. Process a separate web export rather than your private master, then inspect the result at its intended display size. Do not treat the processed copy as secure against all future attacks.
- Do not treat Nightshade as a replacement for Glaze. Choose a tool based on its stated goal, and check the project’s current guidance before using tools together.
- Keep private records of your work. Preserve originals, working files, drafts, dated exports, and relevant commission or publication records. These do not prevent training, but may help document authorship and chronology.
- Consider how much to publish. A lower-resolution preview, selective release, or private delivery may reduce exposure, though it can also affect how people view or discover your work.
- Keep claims in perspective. A tool’s stated purpose, a project’s tests, and an independent attack’s results each describe particular evidence. None alone proves universal protection or universal failure.

Does Glaze stop people from copying a painting?
No. Glaze is designed to disrupt training-time style mimicry. It does not prevent downloading, reposting, tracing, or ordinary copying.

No. Nightshade aims to affect training-data associations; Glaze targets style mimicry. The tools address different concerns.
