Gōng xǐ fā cái (恭喜发财 / 恭喜發財) is a Mandarin New Year greeting that wishes someone wealth and prosperity. It is often used socially like “Happy New Year,” but its literal sentiment is a wish for prosperity, not a word-for-word translation of “Happy New Year.”
What does Gong Xi Fa Cai mean?
The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary defines the phrase as congratulating someone on gaining wealth and notes its common use as a New Year greeting. The Shanghai Municipal Government’s English-language guide renders it naturally as “Wish you wealth and prosperity.”

How do you pronounce Gong Xi Fa Cai?
Say it in Mandarin as gōng xǐ fā cái, keeping the tone marks when learning or writing the pinyin. “Gong Xi Fa Cai” is an English-letter rendering of Mandarin pinyin; it is not the Cantonese pronunciation.
Is it the same as “Happy New Year”?
Not literally. Gōng xǐ fā cái wishes prosperity, while “Happy New Year” is a general seasonal greeting. In conversation, it can serve a similar role during New Year celebrations. If you want a more direct Mandarin equivalent, the Shanghai Municipal Government guide gives these options:

What is the difference between Gong Xi Fa Cai and Kung Hei Fat Choy?
Gōng xǐ fā cái is Mandarin. “Gong hay fat choy” is a common English approximation of the related Cantonese greeting, often written “Kung Hei Fat Choy.” The spellings are approximations, not exact phonetic guides, and the Cantonese form should not be presented as Mandarin pronunciation. Both expressions are used as New Year wishes, but the language and pronunciation differ.
When can you say Gong Xi Fa Cai?
It is commonly said as a New Year greeting. A National Chengchi University Office of International Cooperation cultural guide also places it in a lucky-money exchange: when receiving lucky money, the phrase expresses a wish for prosperity in the coming year. It is a greeting, not a required formula for giving or receiving money.
