Good Friday is the Christian observance recalling the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday in the Western calendars discussed here and is part of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, the Church’s observance of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection.
What does Good Friday commemorate?
Good Friday is a solemn remembrance of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion. It is not an isolated observance: the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) describes the Sacred Paschal Triduum as the holiest “Three Days” of the Church year, recalling Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection.
The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy places the Paschal fast in this setting: “Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind.”

When is Good Friday?
The date changes from year to year because it is tied to Easter. In the USCCB’s United States Catholic liturgical calendar, Good Friday falls on April 3 in 2026 and March 26 in 2027. These are calendar dates for that Catholic calendar, not universal civil-holiday dates.
Western and Orthodox dates can differ
Christian traditions do not always observe Easter—and therefore Good Friday—on the same date. The Australian Government’s 2026 cultural and religious dates calendar lists April 3 for Protestant and Catholic Christians and April 9 for Orthodox Christians.
