Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, originally nicknamed Nano Banana, is Google’s legacy image-generation and editing model: it accepts text and image inputs for conversational edits, transformations, and image blending. Its stable API ID remains gemini-2.5-flash-image, but Google now recommends Nano Banana 2 Lite as the transition target for new work; do not assume Gemini 2.5 Flash Image is selectable in the current Gemini app.
For an edit, identify what should change and what should stay consistent, then inspect the result and refine it conversationally if needed. The model’s documented capabilities are useful for concepts and iterations, not a guarantee of pixel-perfect edits.
What is Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image?
Google introduced Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, also known as Nano Banana, on August 26, 2025. Google described native image generation and editing, natural-language transformations, blending multiple images, maintaining a character or object across images, and using Gemini’s world knowledge. Examples included changing a pose, removing a person or stain, blurring a background, and colorizing a black-and-white photo. These are supported use cases, not promises of perfect local control. What Nano Banana is good at
Conversational image editing
Start with an image, ask for a change, inspect the result, and continue with another instruction if needed. Google documents conversational edits and iterative refinement, but this research did not test prompts or outputs. It is sensible to make a targeted request and review the result rather than expect a precise, unchanged surrounding image.
For example, you could ask to change a room’s wall color, restyle a landscape, or remove an object. Use it to explore a painting idea or make a concept image, not as a substitute for a faithful reproduction of a hand-painted original.
Targeted transformations
Google documents localized transformations such as changing a background, removing a mark, or adjusting a pose. Name the subject or region and describe the desired change. Nearby details may still be reinterpreted, so check them after generation.
Blending multiple reference images
You can provide multiple images and describe which elements to carry over—for example, placing a product in a new scene or applying one image’s style to an object in another. Explain each reference’s role rather than simply asking the model to combine them. Google’s launch examples
Repeated subjects and consistency
Google describes maintaining a character or object’s appearance across prompts and edits. Consistency and fine factual details were also improvement areas Google identified at launch, so inspect faces, hands, markings, clothing, and other details when continuity matters. Do not treat likeness preservation as guaranteed.
Natural-language instructions and visual understanding
The model accepts image and text inputs and can return image and text outputs. Natural-language instructions can be useful when you know the visual change you want but do not use conventional editing terminology. Google’s launch post identified long-form text rendering, character consistency, and factual representation of fine details as areas for improvement at that time; this is not an independent or current performance benchmark. How to generate or edit an image with Gemini Apps
Current Gemini Apps Help describes image creation and editing with Nano Banana models, including Nano Banana 2. It does not confirm that Gemini 2.5 Flash Image remains directly selectable in the consumer app. Gemini Apps may choose a Nano Banana model according to the model option selected, so check the current model choice and help information rather than assuming the app uses the legacy API model. Availability depends on supported countries and languages; image editing is unavailable to users under 18. Google Gemini Apps Help
- Open Gemini Apps and sign in. Check that image creation or editing is available for your account, language, and country.
- Start with an image or describe the image you want. Follow the current in-app controls to upload an existing image or begin image creation.
- State the requested change plainly. Identify the object or area and say what should remain consistent.
- Review the result. Check faces, hands, text, edges, shadows, and elements you intended to preserve.
- Refine conversationally if needed. Make a focused follow-up request and inspect the next result; precise preservation is not guaranteed.
A prompt structure for more controllable edits
A practical starting formula is:
Action + subject or area + desired result + preservation instruction + style or composition constraint.
The preservation clause tells the model what you want to remain consistent, but it does not ensure that every other part of the image will be unchanged.
1. Local edit prompt
Replace only the blue sofa with a warm beige sofa. Preserve the room layout, walls, windows, shadows, perspective, camera angle, and other objects as closely as possible.

2. Multi-image blend prompt
Use the person from image one, the product from image two, and the warm studio lighting from image three. Create a product portrait with the person holding the product at chest height. Keep the person recognizable and do not add extra logos or text.
Identify the role of each reference instead of merely saying combine these images. Add placement, crop, or camera-angle details if those matter to the concept.
3. Iterative correction prompt
Keep the previous composition as consistent as possible. Correct the hands and remove the extra object near the lower-right corner. Avoid changing the subject’s clothing, facial expression, lighting, or background.
Focused follow-up instructions can help refine a result. If it drifts, return to the best earlier version and restate the important constraints.

Transform this landscape reference into a loose watercolor study with visible paper texture and soft, transparent washes. Keep the mountain silhouette, horizon line, three-tree grouping, and warm sunset direction as consistent as possible. Do not add text or people.
For style exploration, specify both the treatment and the structural features you hope to retain. Treat the output as a concept or study, not a faithful reproduction of a hand-painted original.
Prompting checklist
- Name the object or region to edit.
- State what you want to remain consistent: face, pose, background, lighting, perspective, palette, or composition.
- Describe the desired material, color, style, or mood concretely.
- Specify placement and scale when combining references.
- Make one major change at a time if precision matters.
- Say when you do not want extra text, logos, people, or objects.
- Inspect the result; a detailed prompt does not guarantee a precise edit.
These are practical suggestions, not tested guarantees. Google documents conversational editing and iterative refinement, but the cited sources do not establish that every requested constraint will be followed.
Useful image-editing projects
| Project | Potential use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Personal photo variations | Explore changes to clothing, background, or lighting. | Identity features, hands, edges, and changes to other people or objects. |
| Painting concepts | Explore a stylistic treatment or visual concept. | Whether the composition remains suitable for the intended study. |
| Home-decor visualization | Explore a room palette or changes to furniture and artwork. | Perspective, scale, shadows, and how the replacement fits the space. |
| Product and lifestyle concepts | Explore placing a product in a new scene or combining references. | Product shape, labels, logos, hands, and commercial-use rights. |
| Social-media graphics | Create image variations, backgrounds, or themed concepts. | Small text, branding, cropping, and platform dimensions. |
| Storyboards and repeated scenes | Develop rough scenes featuring a recurring character or object. | Continuity of appearance, props, lighting, and spatial relationships. |
These are concept and image-creation workflows. A generative model is not a substitute for a layer-based editor when you need exact selections, non-destructive adjustments, or controlled print preparation.

Where results may fall short
Text and fine detail
Google identified long-form text rendering and factual representation of fine details as improvement areas at launch. Inspect lettering, labels, small details, and product features rather than assuming they are accurate.
Hands, anatomy, and edges
Look closely at hands, jewelry, reflections, thin straps, repeated patterns, and complex edges. A plausible-looking concept may still need correction in a dedicated editor.
Identity and continuity
Google describes maintaining a character or object across edits, but also identified consistency as an improvement area at launch. Compare the output with the source when identity or continuity matters.
Unwanted scene changes
A request to change one item may alter nearby details. State what you hope to preserve, inspect the result, and refine it if necessary. Pixel-perfect preservation is not documented as a guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteResolution and editing control
Google’s guide describes the model as a speed-and-efficiency choice with 1024-pixel output. The documented output dimensions vary by aspect ratio, so check the dimensions table above when planning downstream work. This is not the same as a layered master file prepared for print.
Privacy, copyright, and responsible use
Only upload material you have the right to use. Consider permissions, copyright, and the intended use of both the source image and the output.
- Get permission for people. Be careful with identifiable individuals, private photographs, children, and client images.
- Respect copyright and licensing. The ability to transform an image does not itself grant rights to the source or every element in the output.
- Do not use edits to deceive. Avoid presenting fabricated events or altered evidence as untouched records.
- Follow applicable disclosure rules. Disclose AI assistance when required by an assignment, marketplace, publication, or law.
- Review commercial assets manually. Check likenesses, trademarks, text, and visual errors before publication or advertising use.
What SynthID means
Google’s August 2025 launch post says images created or edited with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image include an invisible SynthID digital watermark. Google’s separate August 2025 Gemini-app announcement said images created or edited in that app included a visible watermark as well as SynthID. Those statements describe different contexts and dates; they do not establish that all current API, app, and enterprise outputs have identical visible marking. The model changed too much
Make the instruction more specific: name the object, describe the requested change, and list the details you hope to keep consistent. Then review the result and make a focused follow-up request if needed.
It edited the wrong object
Describe the object by color, position, shape, and relation to nearby objects. For example, identify “the small blue vase on the right side of the table behind the book” rather than just “the vase.”
The face or character drifted
State which features should remain recognizable and avoid unnecessary changes to pose or lighting. Compare the result manually; consistency is not guaranteed.
The lettering is unusable
Inspect text carefully. If accuracy matters, create the image without lettering and add the copy later in a dedicated editor.
The output is not large enough
Check the documented dimensions for the chosen aspect ratio. For more controlled enlargement, sharpening, color correction, or print preparation, use a suitable photo or design workflow.
The app does not offer the model I expected

Model status: legacy Nano Banana
Google’s current API image-generation guide classifies Gemini 2.5 Flash Image as the legacy pioneer of the Nano Banana family. It describes a speed-and-efficiency use case and recommends transitioning to Nano Banana 2 Lite for enhanced quality, faster generation, and lower API pricing. Those are Google’s stated comparisons; check the current guide for details before choosing a model. Google’s image-generation guide
The stable API ID remains gemini-2.5-flash-image, but the broader Nano Banana name now covers newer models. Confirm the model selected in your app or API before comparing capabilities, prices, or results.
FAQ
Is Nano Banana the same as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image?
Gemini 2.5 Flash Image was originally nicknamed Nano Banana. Google now uses Nano Banana as a family name for newer models too, so check the specific model and route.
Can I still select Gemini 2.5 Flash Image in the Gemini app?
Current Gemini Apps Help describes image generation and editing with Nano Banana models but does not confirm that Gemini 2.5 Flash Image remains directly selectable. Check the current model choice in the app.
Can Gemini 2.5 Flash Image edit an existing photograph?
Yes. Google documents image editing and targeted transformations through the model. Describe the desired change, inspect the output, and refine if needed; exact preservation is not guaranteed.
Does the model guarantee a person will look identical after editing?
No. Google describes consistency as a capability and identified it as an improvement area at launch. Compare the result with the source when likeness matters.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does SynthID tell me about an image?
Google says Gemini 2.5 Flash Image outputs include an invisible SynthID watermark. Google’s app announcement separately described a visible watermark in that app context in August 2025. These claims do not establish identical marking for all current products or prove an image’s full history.
What does Google recommend for new API work?
Google’s current image-generation guide recommends Nano Banana 2 Lite as the transition target from Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Check the live guide for current model details and pricing.
The Bottom Line
Gemini 2.5 Flash Image is the legacy model originally known as Nano Banana, not a confirmed current default in Gemini Apps. For documented API use, identify it by gemini-2.5-flash-image; for new API work, compare Google’s recommended Nano Banana 2 Lite transition target. Make a focused request, say what should remain consistent, and inspect the output. Treat generated images as concepts that may need human review and post-processing.
