Google Stitch is a browser-based Google Labs experiment that turns natural-language prompts, screenshots, sketches, wireframes, and voice instructions into UI designs and front-end code. Google Stitch is a browser-based Google Labs experiment that turns natural-language prompts, screenshots, sketches, wireframes, and—on the newer version—voice instructions into UI designs and front-end code. It is free to try during its Labs phase, but it is not a guaranteed permanent unlimited service. Stitch is most useful for rapidly exploring interfaces and bridging an approved visual direction into code; it is not a dependable replacement for Figma, a professional designer, or engineering review.

The product has had two important stages. Google launched Stitch at Google I/O on May 20, 2025, with prompt-to-UI generation, image input, iterative refinement, Figma handoff, and code export. On May 19, 2026, Google announced a substantially repositioned experience built around a real-time “vibe design” canvas, voice input, the Stitch Agent, shareable links through Google AI Studio, Antigravity export, and direct Netlify publishing.

For a painter, illustrator, photographer, or other creative professional, that could mean quickly exploring:

  • a portfolio homepage;
  • a gallery or commission-booking flow;
  • a studio inventory dashboard;
  • a course or workshop landing page;
  • a responsive shop interface; or
  • a client-facing project-management screen.

The practical value is speed. Stitch can help turn a vague idea or rough sketch into something concrete enough to evaluate, discuss, revise, and eventually hand to a developer.

When did Google Stitch launch?

Google introduced Stitch on May 20, 2025, during Google I/O. The original announcement described it as a Google Labs experiment for generating desktop and mobile UI designs and front-end code from natural-language prompts and images. Google’s launch material identified Gemini 2.5 Pro, while launch reporting described Gemini 2.5 Flash and Gemini 2.5 Pro as selectable models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The significant current update arrived on May 19, 2026. Google described the newer Stitch as an AI-native design canvas with real-time streamed generation and an agent that can help steer the work while it is being created. The update also added voice input, support for existing code and design-file context, Google AI Studio sharing, Antigravity export, and direct Netlify publishing. Google said these updates were available globally from that date, although individual account, age, language, and regional eligibility can still affect access.

These dates matter because many articles still describe the 2025 product as though it were the current interface. They also repeat the original Gemini model names as permanent specifications. Google’s current design-to-code codelab shows a newer interface with Web/Mobile project selection and model labels including Gemini 3 and 3.0 Flash. Treat those labels as documentation for that workflow, not as a promise that Stitch’s model selector will never change.

What can Stitch create?

Prompt-to-UI designs

You can describe the audience, product, platform, visual language, screens, content, and primary action. Stitch then proposes layouts and visual treatments. A useful brief might specify that a portfolio should feel calm and editorial, use large artwork, keep navigation minimal, and make commission inquiries prominent.

Image-to-UI designs

Google’s original launch description specifically mentioned screenshots, whiteboard sketches, and rough wireframes. Stitch attempts to translate those references into digital layouts. The result should be treated as an interpretation, not a guaranteed pixel-perfect reconstruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conversational iteration

You can request variations, change a theme, revise individual elements, alter the layout, or ask for another direction. For better control, establish the overall structure first, then refine copy, spacing, components, states, and mobile behavior.

Voice and real-time generation

The 2026 version adds spoken instructions and streams work onto the canvas as it is generated. The Stitch Agent is intended to let you guide that process while the design is taking shape. This makes Stitch feel closer to directing a visual collaborator than filling out a static form.

Code and implementation handoff

Stitch can generate front-end code. The newer workflow also connects Stitch to Google’s Antigravity environment through MCP, allowing an agent to retrieve a Stitch project, extract design rules, and scaffold an implementation that reflects its typography, colors, and layout.

That is a bridge from design to development—not proof that the generated code is ready for production. Generated code still needs review for architecture, dependencies, routing, responsiveness, accessibility, security, API handling, loading states, error states, and maintainability.

How to use Google Stitch

  1. Open stitch.withgoogle.com and sign in.
  2. Start a new design.
  3. Choose Web or Mobile if that selector is present in your account.
  4. Choose an available model from the model dropdown.
  5. Describe the product, user, screen, visual style, content, and constraints.
  6. Generate the design using the send or arrow control.
  7. Use the chat sidebar to request focused revisions.
  8. Name the project, then use the export, sharing, or publishing controls currently available to you.

The exact controls may change because Stitch remains a Labs product. Google’s current codelab documents the Web/Mobile selector, model selector, prompt field, generation control, and chat-sidebar refinement workflow.

A prompt that produces more useful UI concepts

Short prompts can work, but detailed constraints usually make the output easier to judge. Try a structure like this:

Design a responsive web portfolio for a professional abstract painter
whose visitors want to view recent work, understand the artist's process,
and request a commission.

Create these screens:
1. Home page with a strong featured painting and primary Commission inquiry action
2. Gallery with filters for series, year, and medium
3. Artwork detail page with dimensions, materials, price status, and inquiry button
4. Commission form with budget, timeline, size, and reference-image upload

Use a quiet editorial style: warm off-white background, charcoal text,
muted terracotta accents, generous spacing, and large artwork imagery.
Prioritize the artwork over decorative UI. Use realistic copy, clear hierarchy,
accessible contrast, semantic labels, keyboard-friendly controls, and responsive
mobile layouts.

Include loading, empty, error, hover, focus, disabled, and success states.
Do not add social feeds, accounts, payments, or features outside this brief.

If you are working from a reference image, state whether it is an exact reconstruction target or only a style reference. For complex screens, ask Stitch to handle the page in sections and separately check typography, spacing, colors, imagery, interaction states, and responsive behavior.

Is Google Stitch really free?

The careful answer is: Stitch is free to try during its Google Labs phase, but Google has not published a permanent unlimited pricing commitment or a stable public quota table. Current public descriptions call it free, while Google’s official pages emphasize its experimental status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google has used generation limits, and those limits have changed. For example, a Google staff reply in August 2025 referred to 350 Standard generations and 50 Experimental generations per month. A later staff reply in September 2025 said the Experimental allowance had increased from 100 to 200 generations per month. Third-party pages repeat several different numbers, including daily-credit systems.

Those historical figures should not be treated as your current allowance. Check the live Stitch interface and your account status. If a generation fails or resets unexpectedly, quota exhaustion is one possible cause, but it is not the only one.

Does Stitch export editable Figma designs?

Stitch supported Figma handoff at launch, but it is inaccurate to say that it always exports an editable Figma file. Historical Google forum guidance indicates that Figma export was available in Standard mode but not Experimental mode, and users have reported export controls disappearing or becoming unavailable.

The safest description is: Stitch has supported Figma handoff, subject to the current product version, generation mode, input type, and account interface. The 2026 Google announcement places more emphasis on Google AI Studio sharing, Antigravity export, and Netlify publishing than on promising universal Figma export.

Before depending on Figma export for a client or team workflow, make a small test project in the mode you plan to use. Preserve the original prompt and reference files so you can reproduce the concept if an export option changes.

What does the Stitch-to-code workflow look like?

Google’s current Antigravity codelab documents a more structured handoff:

  1. Use Chrome and create or open a Stitch account.
  2. Install the Antigravity IDE.
  3. Create a Stitch API key from the Stitch profile menu under Stitch settings.
  4. In Antigravity, open Agent Manager, then MCP Servers from the editor’s MCP menu.
  5. Install Stitch and add the API key.
  6. Verify the connection by asking: List my Stitch projects.
  7. Ask the agent to fetch the Stitch project and create a DESIGN.md containing typography, colors, and layout rules.
  8. Ask it to scaffold a React/Tailwind implementation.
  9. Compare the implementation with the Stitch design in the integrated browser and correct visual differences.

The codelab lists Chrome, an Antigravity installation, a Stitch API key, Node.js 18 or newer, and a Google Cloud project with billing enabled for the MCP implementation workflow.

Protect the API key. Never place it in a public repository, prompt, screenshot, client-side bundle, or published code. Use the environment or secret-management method recommended by the relevant development tool.

Can Stitch replace Figma, v0, Lovable, or a designer?

Usually, no. Stitch occupies a useful middle ground: it is fast at turning an idea into visual directions and a rough implementation path. It is less suited to being the long-term source of truth for a complex product.

Tool or role Where it is stronger Where Stitch may be stronger
Traditional Figma Design systems, components, governance, collaboration, versioning, and precise stakeholder review Rapid generation from a vague brief, screenshot, sketch, or voice idea
Figma Make Figma-centered workflows, structured design references, functional prototypes, and visual/code iteration Fast independent exploration outside an established Figma system
v0 Generated code and deployment in a Vercel-oriented workflow Early visual exploration and design direction
Lovable Natural-language full-stack web apps with backend, database, and deployment concerns Interface concepts before application architecture exists
Bolt Prompt-driven websites, apps, application logic, and deployment Design-first exploration and visual reference handling
Professional designer Strategy, taste, accessibility judgment, brand systems, research, and nuanced trade-offs Producing many starting points quickly and cheaply

Google’s own launch positioning and contemporaneous reporting did not present Stitch as a full-fledged replacement for Figma or Adobe XD. It is better understood as an accelerator and design-to-code bridge.

Who should use Stitch?

Stitch is a strong choice when you need several visual directions quickly, are starting from a rough product idea or reference image, or want to connect interface exploration to an AI coding workflow. Founders, product managers, developers, students, freelancers, and small teams without a dedicated designer may find it particularly useful.

For a creative business, it can be a practical first pass for a portfolio, commission funnel, course site, online gallery, or private studio tool. It can help you answer questions such as “Should the gallery be grid-based or editorial?” before paying for a full build or asking a developer to implement an uncertain concept.

Who should not rely on it alone?

Do not make Stitch your sole source of truth when a project requires a mature component library, tightly governed design tokens, multiple designers editing together, precise localization, thoroughly specified accessibility, or production code that cannot depend on manual engineering review.

It is also a poor sole foundation for a long-lived business-critical product if the company cannot tolerate a Google Labs feature changing, losing capabilities, changing quotas, or disappearing.

Privacy, confidential material, and usage rights

Do not upload passwords, API keys, private customer records, unreleased product information, confidential client work, or other material you are not authorized to share. Google’s Terms of Service place responsibility on users for the content they submit and for having the necessary rights to upload or share it. Stitch is also covered by Google’s service-specific terms and generative-AI prohibited-use policy.

Review generated assets before publishing. Generated or externally sourced imagery, icons, fonts, code packages, and other materials may have licensing restrictions. Figma’s documentation for its own AI prototyping workflow makes the same general warning: the user remains responsible for checking rights before publication. The safest practice is to replace questionable assets with artwork, fonts, icons, and packages whose licenses you have verified.

Common Stitch problems and how to recover

The generation hangs, resets, or stops

  • Check whether your account has reached its current allowance.
  • Refresh the page and sign in again.
  • Try a shorter, more focused prompt.
  • Remove oversized or problematic image references.
  • Try another available generation mode.
  • Wait for the allowance to reset if the interface indicates that you are limited.
  • Save the prompt and source files so you can recreate the work elsewhere.

Google forum discussions have linked some failures to generation limits, while other reports described regional or temporary availability problems. Do not assume that every stalled prompt is a prompt-writing error.

The result looks generic

Add the intended audience, information hierarchy, content density, brand attributes, layout constraints, and explicit exclusions. Ask for multiple directions before choosing one. The first generation is usually more valuable as exploration than as a finished design.

The result does not follow the reference

Say whether the reference should be reproduced closely or used only for mood and style. Break a complex page into sections. Check typography, spacing, color, image treatment, and interaction states one at a time.

The Figma button is missing

Check the current generation mode and export controls. Historical Google guidance indicates that Standard mode supported Figma export while Experimental mode did not. Because the product has changed, verify what your current project actually offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The generated code does not work

Use it as a scaffold. Install and audit dependencies, run it locally, inspect the DOM and responsive behavior, test keyboard navigation and error handling, review security-sensitive code, and adapt it to your real application architecture before deployment.

Bottom line

Google Stitch is worth trying if you want to explore an interface quickly from words, images, sketches, or voice. Its strongest role is helping you establish a visual direction and move that direction toward code. Its weaknesses are the normal weaknesses of an experimental AI product: changing models and quotas, inconsistent export availability, uncertain production quality, and the need to review privacy, accessibility, licensing, and architecture.

Use Stitch for the first 60–80 percent of visual exploration, then move the approved direction into a governed Figma workflow or a real engineering environment. That gives you the speed of AI generation without pretending that a generated screen is the same thing as a finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Google Stitch?

Google Stitch is a browser-based Google Labs experiment that generates UI designs and front-end code from natural-language prompts, screenshots, sketches, wireframes, and voice instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Google Stitch free?

It is free to try during its Labs phase, but Google has not promised permanent unlimited access. Generation allowances and features have changed, so check the live account interface for current limits.

Can Google Stitch export to Figma?

Stitch has supported Figma handoff, but availability can depend on the current product version, generation mode, input type, and account. Do not assume every project will always show a Figma export option.

Does Google Stitch replace Figma or a professional designer?

No. Stitch can accelerate ideation and produce a useful starting point, but Figma remains stronger for governed design systems and collaboration, while production code still requires engineering review.

Is Google Stitch code production-ready?

Yes, but treat the result as a scaffold. Review dependencies, routing, responsiveness, accessibility, security, API handling, loading and error states, licensing, and maintainability before publishing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Google Stitch is a free-to-try, AI-powered UI ideation and design-to-code bridge—not a Figma replacement or production-ready app builder. Use it to explore concepts rapidly, then review and rebuild the chosen direction in your actual design and engineering workflow.
