What Google Stitch actually is
Google introduced Stitch as a Google Labs experiment that turns prompts and visual inputs into UI designs and front-end code. Its original workflow focused on generating interfaces from natural-language and image prompts, refining them through conversation, selecting themes, exporting code, and transferring designs into Figma. Google’s original announcement describes that prompt-to-UI positioning.
Google’s May 2026 update presents Stitch as a more interactive “vibe design” environment. It describes real-time canvas generation, the Stitch Agent, voice input, support for existing codebases and design files, sharing through Google AI Studio, export to Google Antigravity, and web publishing through Netlify. Google’s update provides the current feature context.
Stitch is most useful when you have a blank page and want to see several plausible directions quickly. It can help a founder, developer, or product manager turn an idea into a visual artifact before committing to detailed manual design work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt should not automatically be treated as a full Figma replacement, a mature enterprise design-system platform, a UX-research substitute, an accessibility validator, or a guarantee of production-ready code. Stitch remains associated with Google Labs, and its features, availability, and export behavior may evolve.
What Figma means in this comparison
“Figma” covers several related products and capabilities:
- Figma Design: the core canvas, visual design, and prototyping environment.
- Figma AI: AI-assisted editing, organization, content, image, and interaction workflows.
- Figma Make: prompt-driven creation of interactive experiences and code-oriented prototypes.
- Figma Agent: newer agentic functionality for generating, remixing, automating, and modifying work.
- Dev Mode and MCP: developer handoff and access to Figma context for implementation and AI-assisted workflows.
Figma’s advantage is not simply having more manual controls. It combines components, variants, auto layout, variables, libraries, prototyping, multiplayer collaboration, comments, permissions, version history, plugins, APIs, developer inspection, and design-system governance. Current plan and feature details are listed on Figma’s pricing page.

Stitch versus Figma AI: generation-first versus workspace-first
The most useful distinction is the starting point.
Stitch starts with generation: describe an interface, provide a reference, use voice or other inputs, and steer what appears on the canvas. Its natural question is, “What should I generate?”

Figma AI starts inside a design workspace: it helps create, modify, organize, and prototype content in a file that may already contain components, variables, libraries, and product context. Its natural question is, “What should I change, organize, or build within this design file?”
That difference explains why Stitch may feel faster for blank-page ideation, while Figma becomes more valuable once a team has established design rules and shared assets.
UI generation and multi-screen flows
Stitch is a strong fit for a brief such as: “Create a polished personal-finance app with onboarding, an account overview, transactions, spending insights, savings goals, and mobile navigation.” It can quickly provide a visual direction and several connected screens.
However, attractive screens do not necessarily mean a coherent product flow. Review whether the generated result includes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Consistent navigation and repeated elements across screens
- Clear information architecture
- Responsive behavior on mobile and desktop
- Loading, empty, error, permission, and offline states
- Correct content hierarchy and realistic data conditions
- Accessible contrast, focus states, labels, and interaction patterns
- A usable prototype rather than disconnected visual mockups
Figma can also support complete multi-screen prototypes, but its advantage is explicit control. Designers can define components, variants, overlays, transitions, responsive constraints, and interaction states instead of relying primarily on regeneration.
Neither tool guarantees good UX. Both can make weak information architecture look polished, and neither replaces user research or testing with real users.
Editing, control, and consistency
Stitch’s advantage is speed. A conversational instruction can make a broad transformation without manually rebuilding every frame. That is valuable when you are exploring layout, hierarchy, color, and visual style.

The trade-off is determinism. A broad prompt may change more than intended, while a small requested change may fail to preserve a specific detail. Repeated regeneration can also introduce inconsistencies between screens.

Figma offers direct control over individual layers, dimensions, constraints, typography, spacing, auto layout, components, variants, variables, styles, and interactions. This takes more setup, but makes the final artifact more predictable and editable.
The practical trade-off is therefore speed versus determinism: Stitch can reduce time to a first concept; Figma generally gives you more control over the final design.
Design systems: Figma’s clearest advantage
A set of screens that looks consistent is not necessarily a design system.
Figma supports reusable components, variants, shared libraries, variables, styles, organization-wide systems, multi-brand systems on higher plans, and developer references such as Code Connect. Those features help a team govern how design decisions are reused and changed.
Recommended Free Tools
It is useful to distinguish four levels of consistency:
- Visual consistency: screens look related.
- Structural consistency: screens use shared components and layout rules.
- Operational consistency: shared changes can be governed and propagated.
- Engineering consistency: tokens and components map reliably to implementation.
Stitch may generate visually consistent screens, but that does not establish the last three levels. If your product already depends on a component library or token system, Figma is the safer system of record.

Can Stitch export to Figma?
Google’s original announcement described a “paste to Figma” workflow, and secondary coverage has also described Figma handoff. But export paths, labels, eligibility, and layer fidelity can change as Stitch evolves.
Do not treat these outcomes as interchangeable:
- An image export
- HTML or CSS export
- Front-end code export
- A Figma paste or transfer
- Editable, structured Figma layers
- A screenshot imported into Figma
- Export to Google Antigravity
- Publishing through Netlify
Before relying on Stitch for production design operations, confirm the current controls and check whether the result remains editable, preserves useful structure, and can be mapped to your existing components. A transfer to Figma does not automatically mean perfect layer organization, reusable components, variables, or design-token mapping.
Code generation and developer handoff
Stitch is designed to bridge visual exploration and front-end code. Google says the current workflow can work with existing codebases and export into Google Antigravity; its original announcement also positioned Stitch as a source of front-end code. Google’s Stitch update and original announcement describe these capabilities.
Figma’s developer workflow is less about treating every generated screen as finished code and more about connecting an approved design system to implementation. Dev Mode, Code Connect, variables, libraries, inspection, and MCP-related workflows can give engineers more durable context.
Generated code from either product should be treated as a starting point. Review it for:
- Semantic and accessible markup
- Responsive behavior and browser compatibility
- Loading, empty, error, and permission states
- Real data, authentication, and backend integration
- Security and privacy issues
- Performance and bundle size
- Design-token consistency
- Maintainability, tests, and refactoring needs
A visually accurate prototype can still have poor component boundaries, missing business rules, inaccessible interactions, or code that is expensive to maintain.

Google’s May 2026 Stitch update describes real-time work with the Stitch Agent and shareable links through Google AI Studio. That is useful for sharing and iteration, but it should not automatically be equated with Figma-style multiplayer editing, structured comments, branching, approvals, enterprise permissions, or organization-wide design governance.
When comparing collaboration, ask specifically about live co-editing, comments, review workflows, permissions, version recovery, asset sharing, library enforcement, administration, and file portability.
Pricing and AI-credit economics
Prices and AI allowances change, so verify the live pages before purchasing.
Figma’s pricing page, observed on August 16, 2026, listed:
- Starter: Free
- Professional Full seat: $16 per month
- Professional Dev seat: $12 per month
- Professional Collab seat: $3 per month
- Organization Full seat: $55 per month, billed annually
- Organization Dev seat: $25 per month, billed annually
- Organization Collab seat: $5 per month, billed annually
- Enterprise Full seat: $90 per month, billed annually
- Enterprise Dev seat: $35 per month, billed annually
- Enterprise Collab seat: $5 per month, billed annually
Figma says AI uses a shared credit system across Figma AI features and products. See the current pricing page and pricing FAQ for current plan, seat, feature, and credit details.
Secondary coverage has described Stitch as free or without a paid tier, but the exact current limits and credit allowances should be confirmed on the official Stitch pricing page before publication or purchase. Do not assume that “free” means unlimited generations, permanent availability, or unlimited exports.
The relevant comparison is total workflow cost. A low-cost generator may save exploration time, while Figma’s paid seats may pay for themselves through collaboration, design-system maintenance, review, and reduced handoff ambiguity.
Which tool should you choose?
Choose Google Stitch if you:
- Are starting from a blank page.
- Want several UI directions quickly.
- Prefer conversational or voice-driven iteration.
- Need connected screen concepts before detailed design work.
- Are a founder, developer, marketer, or product manager who does not work fluently in design tools.
- Want an early bridge from a product brief to front-end experimentation.
- Are comfortable reviewing and correcting AI-generated output.
Choose Figma if you:
- Need exact visual and interaction control.
- Already have a Figma-based team workflow.
- Rely on components, variables, libraries, or design tokens.
- Need structured collaboration, critique, versioning, and permissions.
- Maintain a long-lived product or multi-brand system.
- Need dependable developer inspection and handoff.
- Require a stable source of truth rather than an exploratory artifact.
Use both if you:
- Write the product brief and constraints.
- Generate several directions in Stitch.
- Select the strongest concept.
- Transfer or recreate it in Figma.
- Replace generated elements with approved components.
- Apply variables, tokens, accessibility rules, and responsive states.
- Build the interaction model and prototype.
- Share the Figma file for critique and engineering handoff.
- Treat generated code as a prototype until it passes engineering review.
A practical Stitch-to-Figma workflow
Use Stitch for divergence and Figma for convergence.
- Define the brief: include users, goals, platforms, content, brand constraints, required states, and technical limitations.
- Generate alternatives: ask Stitch for multiple information-architecture and visual directions rather than accepting the first attractive result.
- Check the flow: inspect navigation, empty states, errors, permissions, responsive behavior, and cross-screen consistency.
- Choose one direction: keep the strongest concept and document why it fits the product.
- Move into Figma: use the current transfer path if it preserves useful structure; otherwise recreate the design using approved components.
- Systemize it: replace one-off generated elements with components, variables, styles, and tokens.
- Prototype deliberately: define interactions, states, overlays, and transitions instead of assuming the generated flow is complete.
- Review and hand off: use comments, version history, Dev Mode, and engineering review.
- Test the implementation: validate real data, accessibility, browsers, performance, and maintainability.
Common failure modes
Stitch
- Beautiful screens with weak information architecture
- A polished happy path with no loading, empty, error, or permission states
- Inconsistent navigation across generated screens
- Generic layouts or familiar visual clichés
- Large unintended changes after a small conversational request
- Inconsistent results after repeated iterations
- Code that looks correct but is difficult to maintain
- Output that does not map cleanly to an existing component library
- Changing export behavior because the product is still evolving
Figma AI and Figma Make
- AI-generated layouts still requiring substantial refinement
- Shared AI credits affecting usage economics
- Seat categories and add-ons complicating cost estimates
- Output that does not automatically honor every library, variable, or accessibility requirement
- Prompt-generated prototypes being mistaken for production software
- A well-organized file that still contains poor UX decisions
Both tools
- Neither replaces user research or product strategy.
- Neither guarantees WCAG compliance.
- Neither can infer business rules that were not supplied.
- Both can make weak UX appear credible.
- Both require human review using realistic content and data conditions.
Alternatives worth considering
- Framer is better suited to visual website design and responsive publishing than to general product-design governance.
- Vercel v0 is more code-centric and useful when the primary goal is prompt-to-web-UI generation.
- Lovable focuses more on functional, full-stack application prototypes.
- Uizard is approachable for beginner-friendly wireframes and mockups.
- Penpot is worth considering for open-source or self-hosted collaborative design workflows.
Final recommendation
Choose Google Stitch when your main problem is getting from an idea to several plausible UI directions quickly. Choose Figma when your main problem is turning an approved direction into a precise, collaborative, maintainable product design.
For most professional teams, the best answer is to use both: generate and explore in Stitch, then refine, systemize, review, and hand off in Figma. Stitch can replace parts of early-stage exploration for some users, but it is not a one-for-one replacement for Figma’s design-system, collaboration, governance, and developer-handoff workflow.
