Google Whisk is no longer available as a standalone service. Google announced on March 12, 2026, that Whisk would be discontinued on April 30, 2026, with its best capabilities moving into Flow. Users were told to download their libraries or opt in to migration before the deadline; assets would not transfer automatically.
What Google Whisk was
Whisk was a Google Labs experiment introduced in the United States on December 16, 2024. Instead of asking users to describe every detail in a text prompt, it let them provide reference images for three elements:

- Subject: the person, object or character to feature

- Style: the visual treatment, such as a painting or illustration
Users could mix those references to generate a new image. Google described Whisk as a way to capture the “essence” of reference images, not reproduce them exactly. It was intended for fast creative exploration rather than exact image copying. See Google’s original explanation of Whisk.
How Whisk generated images
Whisk interpreted reference images through captions rather than simply copying and combining the uploaded pictures:
- The user provided reference images for the subject, scene and style.
- Gemini analyzed the images and generated captions describing them.
- Imagen 3 used those descriptions to generate a new image.
Because the references were interpreted through captions, the result was a remix and could differ from the original images. Whisk was not intended to guarantee an exact likeness or composition.

What “available in 100+ countries” meant
In February 2025, Google announced that Whisk was rolling out in more than 100 countries and territories, including Japan. This described an international rollout, not universal availability. Google later announced a further expansion to 77 countries, starting August 19, 2025.

Can you still use Whisk?
No—not as a standalone service. Google discontinued Whisk on April 30, 2026. Google’s notice said remaining library media would be permanently deleted after the deadline and could not be recovered.
Before the deadline, users could download their data or opt in to migration. Migration was not automatic. Google also warned that Flow was not available in every country, so some users had no migration path and were advised to download their content. Google said existing AI credits were already available in Flow because Whisk and Flow used the same AI credits platform.
What replaced Whisk?
Google moved Whisk’s best capabilities into Flow, its platform for AI-powered image and video creation. Google described Flow as the destination for Whisk’s best capabilities, but did not promise that every former control, interface element or output behavior would remain unchanged.

Whether Flow meets your needs depends on a few practical questions:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Availability in your country | Google warned Flow was not available everywhere when it announced the move. |
| Your saved Whisk assets | Assets did not transfer automatically; users needed to download or opt in to migration before the deadline. |
| Image and video features | Flow is a broader image- and video-creation platform, not necessarily an identical Whisk interface. |
| Account and credits | Google said existing AI credits were available in Flow through the shared credits platform. |
Check Google’s current Flow information for regional availability and account requirements rather than relying on old Whisk instructions.

Where it was useful
- Exploring a subject, scene and visual style by combining reference images
- Creating early visual concepts and remixes without writing long text prompts
- Trying visual ideas quickly as part of a creative process
Its limitations
- It interpreted references rather than guaranteeing an exact copy.
- It was an experiment, not a guaranteed long-term product.
- Its standalone service was retired, and migration to Flow was not automatic or available to everyone.
What happened to Whisk creations?
Google advised users to download their libraries or opt in to migration before April 30, 2026. The notice said remaining library media would be permanently deleted after the deadline. Because Flow was not available in every country, Google recommended downloading content for users who could not migrate.

FAQ
Why did Google discontinue Whisk?
Google announced that Whisk’s best capabilities were moving into Flow. The cited announcement does not give a further reason for discontinuing the standalone service.
Can I migrate my Whisk library to Flow now?
Google’s migration and download instructions applied before the April 30, 2026 deadline. The notice said remaining library media would be permanently deleted after that date. Check Google’s current support information for any available account-specific options.
Did Whisk work in every country?
No. Google announced rollouts to more than 100 countries and territories in February 2025 and 77 more beginning in August 2025. Those announcements did not establish worldwide availability, and Google later warned that Flow was also unavailable in some countries.
Did Whisk’s AI credits transfer to Flow?
Google said existing AI credits were already available in Flow because the two services used the same AI credits platform. This did not mean Whisk assets transferred automatically.
