Yes—Google’s Nano Banana image generator is officially available through Gemini. It is not a separate app: open Gemini, choose Create images from the tools menu, and generate or edit images in a conversation. The original Nano Banana launch happened in August 2025; in 2026, Gemini users may instead be routed to the newer Nano Banana 2 or the higher-end Nano Banana Pro, depending on their account, plan, location, and the Google product they are using.
What is Nano Banana?
Nano Banana is Google’s informal product name for a family of Gemini image-generation and image-editing models. The original version was associated with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Google later introduced Nano Banana 2, associated with Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, and Nano Banana Pro, associated with Gemini 3 Pro Image.

Nano Banana is different from Google’s Imagen image model family and from Veo, Google’s video-generation technology. It is also not a standalone mobile app, browser extension, or official third-party download.
How to use Nano Banana in Gemini
- Open the Gemini app or Gemini on the web.
- Start a new conversation.
- Open the tools menu and select Create images. Google’s interface may show a banana icon or slightly different wording depending on the device and rollout.
- Describe the image you want, including the subject, composition, style, lighting, aspect ratio, text, and exclusions.
- Submit the prompt, then use follow-up messages to revise the result.
- Download the finished image from the generated result.
For an existing image, upload it after choosing Create images and explain both what should change and what must remain untouched. A useful instruction is:

Edit the uploaded image. Keep the person, facial features, pose, clothing, camera angle, and lighting unchanged. Replace only the background with a sunlit botanical garden. Do not add text or alter the subject.
What can Nano Banana create and edit?
Typical uses include:
- Photorealistic scenes, portraits, illustrations, and character concepts
- Product concepts, packaging mockups, posters, and social graphics
- Object removal or replacement
- Changes to clothing, lighting, backgrounds, and settings
- Photo-to-illustration, figurine, sketch, or other style transformations
- Compositions made from several reference images
- Infographics, diagrams, and designs containing written text
Its main advantage is the conversational workflow. After generating an image, you can ask, “Keep the same character but show a rear view,” “Move the headline higher,” or “Change only the packaging from red to blue.” Targeted instructions generally work better than asking for many unrelated changes at once.

Nano Banana 2 is positioned as a balance of quality, speed, intelligence, cost, and latency. Google positions Nano Banana Pro for more complex graphic design, improved text rendering, factual visual material grounded with Google Search, and higher-resolution output. It is not simply a resolution toggle available to every Gemini user.
Google’s API and Cloud documentation describe model IDs, quotas, output capabilities, and lifecycle rules separately from the Gemini app. Do not assume that selecting Create images exposes the same controls or guarantees the same model as AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Cloud, Flow, or Search.

Is Nano Banana free?
Basic Gemini image generation may be available without a paid Google AI plan, but it is not unlimited and does not guarantee access to Nano Banana Pro. Google says availability and limits depend on the account, country, language, age, product surface, and current rollout.

Google does not provide a single permanent free-generation quota that applies to every user. Check the limit shown in your Gemini account rather than relying on a number from an older tutorial. A paid plan may be worthwhile for people who also need Google storage, Photos, Drive, Gmail, or other bundled services; Nano Banana alone may not justify the upgrade for occasional use.

Availability and Google Photos
Google says image generation is available in the languages and countries where Gemini is available, but individual models and features can have narrower eligibility. Work or school accounts may also be restricted by an administrator.
Gemini can support Google Photos-based workflows where the connected-app feature is available and enabled. Google has noted regional restrictions, and personalized Nano Banana and Google Photos features have been rolling out first to eligible U.S. Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers. Do not assume that a feature available in a U.S. personal account is available in every country, Workspace account, or managed account.

If “Create images” is missing
- Make sure you are signed into the intended Google account.
- Update the Gemini mobile app, then try Gemini on the web.
- Start a new conversation.
- Check your country, language, age eligibility, and account type.
- Try a personal account if you are using a school or employer-managed account.
- Check whether an administrator has disabled Gemini or image generation.
- Remember that a paid subscription may not change every interface immediately because access can be staged.
Important limitations
Nano Banana can preserve a subject or character across edits better than many older image tools, but exact identity preservation is not guaranteed. Repeated edits can introduce identity drift, alter clothing, or change details that were meant to remain fixed.
Text rendering is an advertised strength of Nano Banana Pro, but generated text still needs proofreading. Check names, prices, labels, legal copy, logos, dates, and data manually. Asking for “4K” in a prompt does not necessarily produce a native 4K file; available resolution is controlled by the model, plan, and product surface, and 4K availability may be limited or preview-only in some contexts.
When using personal photographs, review Gemini’s connected-app and account settings before granting access to Google Photos. The mobile app, web app, API, AI Studio, Cloud, Flow, Search, Chrome, and Workspace may all have different privacy controls, model routing, limits, and features.
Alternatives to Gemini’s image generator
- Google AI Studio and Gemini API: Best for developers who need explicit model IDs, automation, repeatable workflows, or programmatic controls. API billing and quotas are separate from Gemini subscriptions.
- Google Flow: Better suited to broader image-and-video projects, with a different creative workspace and plan-dependent limits.
- Adobe Firefly: A natural choice for designers already using Photoshop, Illustrator, or Creative Cloud.
- ChatGPT image generation: Useful for people who already use ChatGPT and want image creation inside a general-purpose assistant.
- Midjourney: A dedicated option for style-driven image creation and concept art.
Quality, limits, commercial terms, and available models change across these services, so no single alternative should be treated as permanently superior without a current controlled comparison.
The practical verdict
For casual users, Gemini’s Create images tool is the simplest way to try Nano Banana. It supports both generation and conversational editing without installing a separate Nano Banana app. Consider a Google AI plan if you need higher limits or Nano Banana Pro and will also use the included storage and Google services. Developers should use AI Studio or the API, while professional designers may prefer Firefly or another dedicated creative workflow.
