Choose a goth makeup direction
Goth makeup is an adaptable aesthetic, not one required set of features. Decide whether you want a soft, romantic, traditional, pastel or runway-inspired look before applying makeup. That choice guides how dark or graphic to make the eyes, how sculpted to make the cheeks and whether to wear a muted or statement lip.

How to do goth makeup step by step
1. Prep your skin and choose a base
Cleanse and follow your usual skincare routine, then allow it to settle before applying makeup. Choose a complexion product and finish that suit you and the look you want. A matte or smooth finish can work well, but you do not need to lighten your skin to create goth makeup.

2. Do the eyes before finishing your complexion
Dark shadow fallout can be conspicuous against finished complexion makeup, so begin with the eyes and clean up before perfecting your base. If you like, start with a transition shade. Press black or charcoal shadow where you want depth, then blend the edges so the result does not become one hard block. Use a small brush to place shadow beneath the lower lash line.

3. Adjust brows and cheek definition
Brows can be softly feathered, more defined or dramatically shaped, depending on the direction you chose. Brow pencil or gel can change their appearance without removing hair. Temporarily lightened brows are another possible stylistic choice, but not a requirement.

4. Choose and apply your lip
Black lipstick gives a bold result; deep plum, blackberry or burgundy offers a moody alternative. A similar-shade lip liner can help define the outline and reduce bleeding. Choose a matte or glossy finish according to your preference.

If you plan to wear both a particularly strong eye and lip, applying the lip first is one way to judge how the two features balance. It is an alternative order, not a rule.
5. Set the makeup to suit the finish
Set your base in a way that suits its formula and the finish you want. Powder or setting spray can be options; neither is necessary for every look. Follow the directions for the products you use.
