A graduation ceremony is a formal event recognizing graduates. It often includes check-in, a procession, speeches and a moment of recognition, such as crossing the stage—but the schedule, participation rules and venue policies depend on the institution. Use the current ceremony page from your school or university to plan your arrival, regalia, tickets, accessibility needs and travel.
What happens at a graduation ceremony?
Many ceremonies follow a broad pattern: graduates check in and line up, process into the venue, hear formal remarks, and are recognized individually or as a group. The event may be called commencement or convocation. Those terms and the ceremony’s relationship to degree completion vary by institution; attending a ceremony does not by itself establish that a student has met every academic requirement.
The exact order, timing and graduate instructions are local. For example, Stanford’s 2026 graduate instructions specify event-specific arrival and entry details, while Columbia’s University Commencement preparation guide says regalia is required. Treat these as examples, not universal rules.
What to check before the ceremony
Confirm your event details and tickets
- Verify the date, venue, graduate eligibility or registration, check-in location, and the required graduate arrival time.
- Check how many guest tickets are available, how they are issued, and whether guests need a ticket or identification to enter.
- Save tickets and instructions where you can access them at the venue. Stanford advises graduates not to rely on Wi-Fi to retrieve their ticket.
Check regalia and dress requirements
Before buying or borrowing a cap and gown, confirm whether the school provides, rents or requires a particular set. Check the correct gown, cap, hood, colors, sizing, pickup or return arrangements, and permitted adornments. Requirements can be strict: Palomar requires official cap and gown to participate, and Auburn says graduates without proper regalia may not participate. Toronto Metropolitan University’s regalia guidance illustrates how gown and hood details can vary by program.

Do not assume that any honor cord, stole or other accessory is acceptable. Follow the institution’s list of approved adornments. For comfort during waiting and sitting, choose suitable clothing under the regalia while observing the school’s dress rules; Fullerton’s etiquette guidance, for example, recommends light, comfortable clothing.
Review venue rules for guests and belongings
Check the venue’s current rules for bags, bottles, food, photography and prohibited items. A policy may differ between an indoor and outdoor event, even at the same institution. Stanford describes clear-bag requirements and screening; UCLA’s commencement FAQs distinguish venue conditions and restrictions. Do not assume a bottle or a small bag is allowed without checking.

Arrange accessibility support early
Contact the office named by the institution and submit requests by its deadline. Ask about the specific support needed, such as accessible seating, sign-language interpretation, captioning, assistive listening devices, Braille or large-print materials, mobility routes or accessible drop-off.

Available services and responsibilities vary. Stanford lists examples of accommodations and an event-specific request deadline in its graduate instructions. UCLA explains in its FAQs that an accessible venue does not necessarily mean the university provides mobility devices or transportation. Confirm arrangements directly rather than inferring them from the venue.

Plan transportation and a family meeting point
Check parking, shuttles, drop-off locations, accessible routes, guest arrival instructions and seating. Agree on where to meet after the ceremony, since crowds can make it difficult to find one another. Columbia recommends selecting a post-ceremony meeting spot in its preparation guide. For outdoor events, read the current weather guidance and contingency plan. UW–Madison’s day-of guide covers event-specific transport, entry, seating, accessibility, carry-in rules and inclement weather.
What to do on the day
- Arrive according to the ceremony instructions. Allow the time specified for security and check-in, and use the entrance and lineup location assigned to your group.
- Keep required documents ready. Have your ticket and identification available if the event instructions require them, and follow directions from ushers and marshals.
- Follow the procession and seating plan. Move promptly to your assigned place and pay attention to instructions for recognition or stage crossing.
- Respect the venue’s ceremony rules. Follow guidance on photography, noise and movement so guests can see and the proceedings can continue smoothly.
Which instructions take priority?
There is no single etiquette code or schedule that applies to every graduation ceremony. The school’s current page for your specific event is the authority for arrival, tickets, regalia, entry, security, accommodations and venue rules. If a general guide conflicts with those instructions, follow the event-specific guidance or ask the institution’s commencement contact.
