Kristi Linauer’s November 24, 2025 account begins with a renovation setback: heavy rain damaged newly installed grasscloth wallpaper. She first suspected the attic HVAC system or the roof, then identified a solar tube skylight that was still installed in the roof as the leak source. Linauer dates the incident to the heavy rain that fell on the Thursday before her November 24, 2025 post. When she checked the room the following morning, two widths of recently installed grasscloth wallpaper had been damaged. The account treats the timing as the first important clue: the wallcovering had been installed only recently, and the visible failure appeared after a major rain event rather than during ordinary use.

That sequence matters because the wallpaper damage was a symptom, not an explanation. The post does not claim that grasscloth inherently fails in rain or that every installation has the same vulnerability. It documents one leak in one house and the process Linauer used to work out where the water was coming from.
Why the first suspects were the attic HVAC system and roof
Her initial possibilities were the attic HVAC system or a roof leak. Both were plausible places to investigate from inside the house, but neither was established as the cause when she first saw the damaged paper. Linauer says an HVAC check took place on Friday and did not find the source.
That negative check narrowed her search without proving that the roof assembly itself was sound. The account then points to a solar tube skylight, which remained installed in the roof, as the culprit. This is Linauer’s reported diagnosis of her home’s incident. It should not be turned into a general claim that solar tubes routinely damage wallpaper, or that an HVAC inspection can rule out every other path for water.

The source she identified: a solar tube skylight
Once the HVAC system had not explained the wet area, Linauer connected the leak to the solar tube skylight. A solar tube is a roof-mounted daylighting component, so the relevant problem in this story was at the roof opening and its connection to the house. The post says proper repair was needed, but it does not describe the repair method, name a contractor, give a price, or confirm that the work was completed.

That distinction is central to the story. Finding the likely entry point and restoring the wall finish are separate decisions. The post identifies the skylight as the source she found; it does not provide a technical inspection report, a laboratory analysis of the wallpaper, or a universal repair procedure for similar leaks.
Two damaged widths, and a limited reserve of matching paper
Linauer says she had enough of the same wallpaper to replace the two damaged widths. That gave her a direct cosmetic option rather than forcing an immediate search for a new pattern or a visibly different substitute. After using the saved material for those replacements, she says only two pieces would remain for future emergencies.
The spare material therefore has two roles in the account. It can restore the affected area now, but it is also a finite reserve for a later accident. The post does not identify the manufacturer, pattern name, seller, or dimensions, so the availability of matching paper is specific to her renovation rather than a promise that replacement rolls will be easy to find for another grasscloth installation.

The post leaves Linauer weighing replacement against an experiment with a surface treatment. The practical differences can be stated without assuming that either path has already succeeded.

The comparison also depends on a condition that comes before cosmetics: whether the leak has actually been stopped. A new piece of paper or a coating cannot be treated as evidence that water is no longer entering from the skylight. The wording describes an investigation, not an endorsement. She did not name a coating, report a trial, or say that sealing made the damaged paper usable again.

What commenters suggested—and what remains only a suggestion
Reader responses mention painting or patching the damaged spots and emphasize stopping the roof leak first. Those comments explain the practical concerns surrounding the incident, but they are not professional findings attributed to Linauer, and the post does not verify either idea as a repair.
The distinction protects against a common mistake in retelling renovation stories: turning a comment into a tested method. In this case, the documented facts stop at the identified solar tube, the available replacement paper, and the author’s consideration of sealers. A comment about paint, a patch, or roof work does not supply a result that the original account lacks.
