Greenfield Village’s Glass Shop is a working demonstration site in the Liberty Craftworks district, where artisans show glassblowing techniques. The Henry Ford currently lists demonstrations daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; check its visitor information before your trip, since schedules can change.
What happens at the Glass Shop?
Visitors can watch artisans demonstrate glassblowing using historical techniques alongside contemporary approaches. The Henry Ford describes glassblowing as a 2,000-year-old art; that is the institution’s characterization on its Liberty Craftworks visitor page, rather than a date independently established here. The page lists the Glass Shop demonstrations daily, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. That listing describes the demonstration schedule, not the opening calendar for Greenfield Village as a whole.
The Glass Shop is a demonstration venue, not a visitor-participation class. You can observe the craft, but the visitor information does not promise hands-on glassblowing.

Why does the building look historic?
The Henry Ford’s Glass Shop collection record says the building was constructed in Greenfield Village in 1931 and designed by architect Edward J. Cutler in the style of nineteenth-century industrial buildings. The institution says it was modeled after the Boston and Sandwich Glass House in Cape Cod and built to demonstrate glassmaking as practiced in nineteenth-century America. It is therefore a purpose-built historic-style setting, not a claim that the building itself dates to the nineteenth century.
The structure was rebuilt and enlarged in 2005, when modern equipment was added. The Henry Ford reports that its artisans create up to 10,000 pieces of historic and contemporary Studio Glass annually. The collection record does not specify the year for that production figure, so treat it as an institutional report rather than a current-year count.

How contemporary glass fits in
The shop’s work extends beyond demonstrations of historic methods. In a 2025 article, The Henry Ford described an artist-in-residence program it developed in 2017: visiting studio glass artists spent five days working with the institution’s glassblowers, exchanging techniques and styles while creating original work. Can you buy glass made at Greenfield Village?
The Henry Ford says many handcrafted pieces by its artisans are available in its gift shops. Availability, designs, and prices are not specified on the visitor page, so ask at the venue or gift shop if you have a particular piece in mind. The page does not establish online ordering for these items.

What should visitors expect?
The Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village Social Narrative notes that the shop may be hot and crowded, and that visitors may smell burning glass. These are possible conditions, not a guarantee for every visit. The Davidson-Gerson Gallery of Glass is nearby if you want to see more glass-related displays.
