A grunge texture is a deliberately rough, worn-looking surface effect. You can simulate it digitally with an overlay or brushwork, or create real marks with paint and other materials. Choose the approach that fits your artwork, then control how much texture appears so it supports rather than overwhelms the image.
What is a grunge texture?
Texture describes the look and feel of a surface, as the National Gallery of Art explains. In graphic design and digital art, grunge texture usually means a simulated surface of rough, worn, splattered, scratched, or aged-looking marks. It is an intentional visual treatment—not evidence that an image or artwork is damaged. Adobe describes grunge brushes as a way to add a worn, weathered appearance, including splatters and patterns associated with graffiti and urban art: Adobe’s guide to grunge brushes.
Choose how to make the texture

How to add a grunge texture overlay in Photoshop
An overlay is a simple way to give a photo or graphic a well-worn appearance. Adobe’s workflow is to place a texture image above the artwork, choose a blending mode such as Overlay, and adjust the effect. Menu labels can vary by software version.
- Open the image you want to texture in Photoshop.
- Place the texture image above the target image so it sits on a separate layer.
- Select the texture layer and choose a blending mode such as Overlay.
- Adjust the blending mode and layer opacity until the texture suits the artwork.
- Save an editable PSD if you want to preserve the layers, or export a PNG or JPEG for a finished image.

How to create grunge texture with digital brushes
Brushes work well when you want texture only in selected areas—for example, worn marks at an edge rather than a uniform treatment across the whole image. Adobe describes using grunge brushes, changing settings such as gradient or shape dynamics, and keeping brushwork on a separate layer. Brush availability and installation steps can change, so check the current application documentation.
You can also make a brush from rough source images. Adobe’s outlined process is to desaturate and arrange texture images, adjust brightness and contrast, then save the result as a brush preset. Keep the brush marks on their own layer so you can alter or remove them independently.

How to make a grunge texture with paint
For traditional work, build texture through varied marks and surfaces rather than trying to imitate a digital overlay exactly. The National Gallery of Art describes ways artists create texture that can be adapted to a grunge look:
- Vary brush size and shape to create irregular marks.
- Layer paint, or apply it with drips and dabs.
- Add materials to change the surface.
- Scratch through paint to reveal layers beneath.
These are adaptable mark-making techniques, not a fixed recipe. Test them on a practice surface first if you need to preserve a finished painting.

How to choose the right amount of distress
There is no universal opacity or brush setting for a convincing grunge effect. Match the texture’s type and strength to the mood and image: a few localized marks can suggest wear, while a dense overlay gives the whole image a more strongly aged appearance. Adobe presents texture as a way to add visual interest or a vintage, well-worn feel; the appropriate intensity remains a design choice.
