Hand-painted tile works best when you treat it as both artwork and architecture: it can provide a durable, washable surface in a kitchen, bath, fireplace surround, or outdoor setting while adding color, narrative, and the unmistakable variation of a human-made object. The most successful rooms do not cover every surface in competing patterns. They give the painted tile a clear role, balance it with solids and quieter tones, and choose an installer who can execute a carefully planned design. From a small botanical backsplash to a 3,000-tile mural, the examples below show how to choose scale, style, placement, and collaborators.
What hand-painted tile is—and why the imperfection matters
Hand-painted tile is ceramic or another tile body decorated by an artist rather than finished solely with a mechanically printed repeat. Brushwork, color pooling, slight shifts in line, and variation from tile to tile are part of the result. That variation is not a manufacturing defect to hide; it is the quality that gives a wall or hearth the presence of an original artwork.

Interior designer and creative director Xavier Donnelly describes the appeal this way: “It inherently defies perfection, and there’s a warmth and joy that a material created by an artist brings to a space.” The practical case is equally important. Donnelly says, “Because tile is a durable, washable, and practical material, it’s ideal for a kitchen, bath, or even outdoors.” Suitability still depends on the specific tile body, glaze, climate, and installation system, so ask the maker and installer for those details rather than assuming every painted tile can be used in every exposure.
The phrase age-old describes a long-standing craft tradition, not a single invention date. One documented project uses 17th-century Portuguese blue-and-white tiles, but that example does not establish a complete history of painted tile. The recent interest described here comes from designers using the medium in both traditional and distinctly contemporary ways.

Where designers are putting painted tile
Kitchens: from a focused backsplash to a story wall
A backsplash is the most familiar application because it places a decorative surface behind a work area while keeping the pattern within a defined boundary. In Jamie Mizrahi’s Montecito retreat, designer Mike Moser used custom Dorset Delft tiles by Aviva Halter as the kitchen backsplash. In a San Francisco home, the Archers commissioned Bruno Grizzo to paint botanical tiles for the kitchen, turning a functional zone into a garden-like composition.
For a kitchen, decide whether the tile should read as a quiet repeated field or as a sequence of individual images. A repeated motif can sit behind open shelving without competing with dishes; a narrative or botanical scheme needs enough uninterrupted wall area for the imagery to be legible. Keep adjoining countertops, cabinetry, and hardware comparatively calm when the tile carries strong color or detailed drawing.
Bathrooms, hearths, and wainscoting
Bathrooms and fireplaces benefit from the same combination of practicality and visual focus. Jessica Jubelirer puts it plainly: “Kitchens, bathrooms, and fireplaces can all benefit from its practicality and beauty.” In a historic Connecticut house designed by Virginia Tupker, Delft and Portuguese tiles form wainscoting in the entryway and bathrooms and surround fireplaces. The kitchen backsplash in that home uses a William Morris-inspired motif, showing how one project can combine historical references without repeating the same pattern everywhere.
Wainscoting creates a strong horizontal datum, so select a pattern that can tolerate corners, doors, plumbing fixtures, and transitions. A fireplace surround is a smaller canvas with a natural focal point; a border, framed panel, or limited palette can make the artwork feel intentional instead of busy.

Architectural details that are easy to overlook
Jubelirer’s lakeside Wisconsin home demonstrates that painted tile does not have to stop at the backsplash. Tiles—most made in Portugal, according to the project account—appear on the hearth, in bathrooms, on baseboards, and inset into boathouse closet doors. The door tiles depict native flowers inspired by the garden. Baseboards and door panels are especially useful when you want a modest amount of art repeated through a house rather than one large statement wall.
Furniture and freestanding surfaces
Tile can become the skin of a piece of furniture. In Stacey Bendet’s New York City apartment, a 12-foot-long dining table is clad in hand-painted tiles by Lola Schnabel. A tiled tabletop changes how the object is read: it becomes a built-in artwork, while the repeated modules provide a visual rhythm across a large surface. Before choosing this approach, resolve edge treatment, weight, seating clearances, and how the surface will be cleaned with the fabricator and installer.

At the Brooklyn restaurant Deux Chats, Donnelly commissioned decorative painter Violet Oliphant to produce 3,000 hand-painted tiles for an Art Nouveau-inspired mural. At the opposite end of the scale, a vintage blue-and-white tile mural appears as wall art in a Palm Beach home by Frank de Biasi. Tile murals by Ángel Santos appear in a bathroom in a Punta Mita estate designed by RP Miller and Studio Antoine. These examples show two different decisions: commission a coordinated field specifically for a wall, or locate a finished mural and treat it as a framed artwork.
Choose a visual language before choosing individual tiles
Hand-painted tile is not one look. The projects use botanical and figurative imagery, Delft and Portuguese references, William Morris-inspired pattern, and Art Nouveau composition. Use the following distinctions to clarify your brief.

| Approach | How it reads | Where the examples use it |
|---|---|---|
| Restrained repeated pattern | A controlled rhythm that supports architecture without becoming the sole focus | Wainscoting, a compact backsplash, or a border around a fireplace |
| Botanical or figurative tiles | Individual images that reward close viewing and can tell a place-specific story | Native flowers on boathouse closet doors and botanical kitchen tiles |
| Delft or Portuguese reference | Blue-and-white or historically informed decoration with a clear cultural precedent | The Montecito Dorset Delft backsplash, the Connecticut house, and the Bavarian retreat |
| Contemporary historical quotation | A new pattern that borrows a visual vocabulary without copying a period scheme | The William Morris-inspired kitchen backsplash and Art Nouveau-inspired restaurant mural |
| Mural-scale narrative | A single composition or coordinated image spread across many tiles | The 3,000-tile Deux Chats mural and vintage murals used as wall art |
These are design choices, not a ranking. A restrained blue-and-white field can be as expressive as a figurative mural when its scale and placement fit the room.
How to use pattern without overwhelming the room
Jessica Jubelirer advises, “We mix patterns with solids and quiet color tones to ensure the result is timeless, and [we] incorporate handmade materials such as wicker, rich stained finishes, and fabrics to soften and add warmth and layers to any space with tile.” Apply that principle as a sequence of decisions:
- Set the visual priority. Decide whether the tile, a view, a piece of furniture, or an architectural feature is the room’s primary focus. If tile is primary, simplify the other large surfaces.
- Limit the active palette. Pull two or three supporting colors from the tile and repeat them in paint, stone, wood, or upholstery. Quiet tones around a vivid pattern give the eye somewhere to rest.
- Balance pattern with solids. Pair a detailed backsplash with plain cabinet fronts, or a patterned wainscot with an unadorned upper wall. Repeating another high-contrast pattern nearby can erase the tile’s hierarchy.
- Add tactile, softer materials. Wicker, stained wood, woven fabrics, and upholstered pieces counter the hardness of ceramic and prevent a tiled room from feeling clinical.
- Account for sightlines. Map what is visible from the entry, dining area, and adjacent rooms. A mural may need a full view; a small border can work where doors or furniture interrupt the wall.
- Order a layout, not just a motif. Ask the maker to show grout lines, cuts, corners, and transitions. The composition should survive the practical divisions of the surface.
Ready-made, vintage, or bespoke: decide how much control you need
| Route | Best fit | Key decision |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made decorative tile | A defined backsplash, border, or small accent where an established pattern is acceptable | Confirm dimensions, finish, color variation, and whether the tile is rated for the intended location |
| Vintage tile or mural | A room that benefits from patina, historical character, or a one-off artwork | Inspect every piece, document the layout, and plan around irregular sizes and condition |
| Bespoke painted tile | A place-specific story, unusual dimensions, or a mural that must fit a particular wall | Allow time for artwork approval, sampling, production, sorting, and a carefully managed installation |
A bespoke commission offers the most control but also the most coordination. Donnelly’s advice is concise: “as with any commission, you’ll need a strong vision, good collaborators, and a detail-oriented installer.” Treat the tile artist, designer, architect or contractor, and installer as one team rather than handing the finished artwork to an installer who has not seen the design intent.

1. Define the story and the limits
Write down what the imagery should communicate: a native garden, a historical reference, a family narrative, or an abstract color field. Record the wall or object’s exact dimensions, all openings, and the viewing distance. Decide whether you want a repeat, a set of unique panels, or a continuous mural.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
2. Choose the maker for the visual language
Review relevant work for line quality, palette, density, and how the artist handles transitions. A botanical specialist may be ideal for a garden-inspired door panel, while a muralist is better suited to a large narrative wall. Ask how the artist supplies drawings, color samples, and a tile-by-tile layout for approval.
3. Resolve the tile system with the installer
Before production, have the installer verify substrate conditions, plane, corners, movement joints, edge profiles, and the planned grout width. The project examples establish the decorative possibilities but do not specify substrate requirements, grout specifications, sealers, or installation methods. Those technical decisions must come from the tile manufacturer and a qualified installer for the actual site.

Paint and glaze can look different at tile size than on a screen or paper. Approve representative samples in the room’s light, then approve the complete elevation or numbered layout. Include spare pieces if the maker recommends them, and record the intended orientation of irregular or figurative tiles.
5. Plan for variation instead of fighting it
Handmade variation may include shifts in color, brush marks, and slight dimensional differences. Decide which variation is desirable and which conditions would be unacceptable before fabrication. Sorting on site should follow the approved composition, not an attempt to make every tile look machine-identical.

6. Coordinate delivery and installation
Confirm packaging, inspection on arrival, storage, sequencing, and who is responsible for damaged pieces. The installer should understand the artwork, preserve the layout, and flag conflicts before setting tile. For a mural, photograph or label each section as it is unpacked.
What to verify for durability and maintenance
Painted tile is often selected because tile is washable and practical, but durability is not identical across every product. Ask for the tile body, glaze or surface finish, recommended cleaning method, resistance to the specific exposure, and any limits on freezing conditions, standing water, heat, or abrasion. For an outdoor application, obtain a written suitability statement for the local climate. For a countertop or table, clarify whether hot cookware, cutting, spills, and acidic cleaners are allowed.
Do not assume that a decorative finish can be treated like an unglazed quarry tile or a factory-printed ceramic. Use the maker’s care instructions, choose compatible grout and cleaning products with the installer, and keep a record of the product name and batch for future repairs. The source projects do not publish price ranges, maintenance schedules, or technical installation specifications, so those details must be established for your specific commission.

Questions to settle before you buy or commission
- Is the design intended as a repeat, a border, individual scenes, or one continuous mural?
- What are the exact tile dimensions, thickness, edge condition, and allowable variation?
- Is the finish suitable for the room’s moisture, heat, traffic, cleaning routine, and—if applicable—freeze-thaw exposure?
- Who supplies the measured elevation and controls the layout during installation?
- How will corners, outlets, plumbing penetrations, door openings, and exposed edges be finished?
- What cleaning products, sealers, and replacement pieces does the maker recommend?
- Which parts of the work are approved before production, and how are changes handled afterward?
Hand-painted tile earns its place when the artwork and the architecture support each other. Use a small application when you want a precise accent, expand to wainscoting or a table when the pattern can carry a larger field, and commission a mural when the wall itself is the canvas. In every case, preserve the handmade variation, control the surrounding palette, and make the installer part of the design team from the beginning.
