When was Chinese New Year in 2025?
Chinese New Year began on January 29, 2025. The Chinese government identified that date as the beginning of the Year of the Snake. China’s State Council announced the new year, and Xinhua reported on the occasion.
What does the Spring Festival celebrate?
Spring Festival is both a calendar observance and a collection of social practices. It falls on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar. UNESCO describes its practices as welcoming the new year, praying for good fortune, bringing families together, and promoting harmony in communities. In December 2024, the practices were added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO’s listing describes the traditions; the Chinese government’s overview reports the inscription.

How to say “Happy Chinese New Year”
“Happy Chinese New Year!” is an appropriate greeting. On January 29, 2025, the Guangdong Provincial Foreign Affairs Office shared this message: “Wishing you a fantastic Chinese New Year from Guangdong province! May the Year of the Snake bring you abundant blessings, peace, and great prosperity.” The official greeting offers a ready example for a card or message.

Which Chinese New Year customs might you see?
Practices differ by region, culture, and family, so no one list describes how everyone celebrates. Examples associated with the holiday include family reunions, red clothing and lanterns, red envelopes, and firecrackers. The Chinese government describes firecrackers as a continuing tradition associated with the legend of Nian. Its overview discusses the celebration period and tradition.
Local practices can have meanings specific to a place. In Shanghai, for example, cleaning the home before the new year is described as “sweeping away the dust,” with wordplay connecting dust and oldness. That is a Shanghai example, not a universal requirement. Shanghai’s government explains the local tradition.

Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are not interchangeable names
Chinese New Year is one observance among the varied celebrations that take place around Lunar New Year. Communities in different countries may follow distinct customs and zodiac traditions; names such as Tet and Seollal refer to their own cultural observances, not other names for the Chinese Spring Festival.
