Renri, or Human Day, falls on the seventh day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is traditionally associated with the birthday of humanity, but its date on the Gregorian calendar changes each year. Customs vary: historical and regional accounts describe human-shaped paper decorations and special foods, while Japan’s January 7 Jinjitsu is a separate observance with its own seven-herb porridge tradition.

What does Renri mean?
Renri (人日), literally “Human Day,” is the seventh day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The Palace Museum describes it as a day associated with the birthday of human beings. Because the date follows the lunar calendar, its Gregorian date changes from year to year; check a reliable calendar for the specific year rather than assuming it is January 7. The Palace Museum’s account of folk New Year customs gives the lunar-calendar definition.

Human-shaped paper decorations
The Palace Museum records cutting colored paper into human figures and wearing or displaying them as adornments. Xinhua’s 2016 account also describes human-shaped ornaments, known as rensheng (人胜). These are traditional decorations, not a requirement for celebrating Renri.
Seven-vegetable soup
Xinhua reports the custom of eating soup made from seven kinds of vegetables, called qibao geng (七宝羹), or “seven-treasure soup.” Its account cites a passage in the historical work Jing-Chu Sui-Shi Ji describing seven-vegetable soup alongside human-shaped decorations. This documents a tradition; it does not show that the meal is eaten everywhere or remains a current practice in every community. Xinhua’s 2016 report attributes the human-creation story to Tianjin folk-custom expert You Guoqing.

How Renri differs from Japan’s Jinjitsu
Japan’s Jinjitsu (人日) is observed on January 7, a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar. It is related in name and seasonal timing to the idea of Human Day, but it is a Japanese observance and should not be conflated with Renri’s seventh day of the Chinese lunar month. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries describes eating seven-herb rice porridge on Jinjitsu as a custom associated with wishing for health. The ministry’s seasonal-calendar guide identifies the date and porridge tradition.

Nanakusa-gayu and its herbs
The Japanese porridge is called nanakusa-gayu (七草粥), or “seven-herb rice porridge.” The Japan Doll Association lists its seven herbs as seri, nazuna, gogyo (hahakogusa), hakobera, hotokenoza (tabirako), suzuna (turnip), and suzushiro (daikon). The association connects the dish with Jinjitsu, picking young herbs, and the Japanese custom of eating porridge made with seven ingredients. It also notes the contemporary association with having a light porridge after New Year’s meals. The custom expresses a wish for health; the sources do not establish a medical benefit. The Japan Doll Association’s Jinjitsu explanation gives the herb names and context.

| Observance | Date | Documented customs |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese-calendar Renri | Seventh day of the first lunar month; Gregorian date changes each year, according to the Palace Museum | Historical and regional accounts describe human-shaped paper adornments and seven-vegetable soup; they do not establish these as universal or uniformly current customs (Xinhua, 2016). |
| Japanese Jinjitsu | January 7, according to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries | Nanakusa-gayu, rice porridge with seven spring herbs, is eaten with wishes for health, according to the Japan Doll Association. |
Choosing a date or food for a celebration
- For Renri: Find the seventh day of the first Chinese lunar month for the year you have in mind. Do not use January 7 as a substitute.
- For Japanese Jinjitsu: January 7 is the relevant date, and nanakusa-gayu is the documented seasonal dish.
- For either observance: Treat a custom as a tradition associated with a source, place, or context—not as something every person must follow.
