Havwoods’ interlocking click system is a named range of engineered-wood herringbone flooring designed so boards engage through a profiled joint rather than being sorted into separate right- and left-handed pieces. Havwoods says that arrangement can speed installation and produce tight joints, but those are manufacturer claims, not independently measured installation results.

The practical decision is model-specific. Havwoods’ US listing showed 11 click-system herringbone products on 13 October 2026, with differences in dimensions, construction, species, finish, wear layer and grade. Choose from the current regional listing, then use the applicable product instructions for the room, substrate and installation method.
What Havwoods’ interlocking click system is
Havwoods sells herringbone engineered timber flooring with a mechanical interlocking profile. Instead of relying on a separate left-hand and right-hand board for the two directions in a herringbone field, the system is intended to let compatible boards connect through the joint profile.

In Havwoods’ product announcement, the company says: “The Herringbone interlocking system allows for fast installation and eliminates the need for right and left handed boards.” That wording describes Havwoods’ intended product benefit. No independent named test in the available material measures how much time the system saves, how much tighter its joints are, or whether it outperforms another installation method.
The boards are described as having four-sided bevelled edges. Havwoods also says the blocks can be arranged in diagonal, doubled and brick patterns, and that the system can be used for wall cladding. Those are manufacturer statements; confirm that the exact model and warranty permit the pattern or application you want.
What is actually in the range
The US product listing displayed 11 products when checked on 13 October 2026. That count is a snapshot rather than a permanent catalogue: stock, regional ranges and model availability can change. A product shown in the United States may not be listed, stocked or specified in another market.
The listing’s filters show the distinctions that matter when comparing boards:

Examples in the US listing include 14 mm engineered European oak products with a 2.5 mm wear layer. Those figures belong to the corresponding listed models only; they are not specifications for every Havwoods click-system board. Verify the live model page before ordering or designing around a stated thickness.

How to choose a board without treating the range as one product
Start with the visual field
Herringbone concentrates attention on the direction and rhythm of every board. Compare shade, finish and grade together rather than selecting colour alone. A heavily characterful grade will read differently once repeated across a large chevron field than it does on a single plank.
Check the dimensions against the room
Record the exact length and width for each candidate. Narrower, shorter blocks create a finer pattern; wider or longer blocks make the chevrons more prominent. The dimensions also affect border details, door clearances and the amount of cutting at room edges. These are design and coordination decisions, not assumptions that can be made from the range name.
Reconcile thickness and adjoining surfaces
Use the model’s total thickness when checking thresholds, stairs, skirting, appliances and transitions to other floors. A listed 14 mm board cannot be treated as interchangeable with a model of another thickness simply because both are labelled herringbone.
Confirm construction and installation method
The click profile does not, by itself, establish that every model can be installed in every room or on every substrate. Ask Havwoods or the authorised regional supplier for the current product-specific installation instructions, permitted installation method and project conditions. If you plan a floating installation, the general Havwoods guide says underlay is required; select the underlay and any other layers according to the applicable model instructions.
What the interlocking design changes during installation
With a conventional herringbone layout, installers commonly have to manage handed pieces or sort boards for the two directions. Havwoods says its interlocking system removes that separate right/left-hand requirement. In practical terms, that can simplify board identification and reduce one source of sorting during layout.

The joint still has a prescribed engagement sequence. It is not a licence to force boards together from any convenient angle. The guide calls for a tapping block along the long edges and warns that forcing a plank vertically before its side is engaged can cause gapping, lipping or tension. The profile therefore changes the handling sequence, not the need for accurate preparation and controlled fitting.
Fitting click-system boards: the sequence in Havwoods’ guide
The following is a concise reading of the available Havwoods guide. Use the current instructions supplied for your exact model if they differ.
- Confirm the installation method and conditions. Establish whether the selected product is being installed as a floating floor or by another method permitted for that model. For a floating installation, the guide requires underlay. Do not choose layers or proceed on the assumption that one model’s instructions cover the entire range.
- Prepare the joint faces. Before attempting to connect boards, clear debris from the mating joints. A small obstruction can prevent the profile from seating fully and can make later tapping appear to solve a problem that is actually contamination.
- Position the boards in the intended pattern. Keep the herringbone direction and any planned border or transition in view. The guide’s joint instructions address engagement; they do not replace the project’s layout planning or the model’s edge and perimeter requirements.
- Angle the male joint into the opposing profile. Introduce the male side at the angle specified by the guide so the parts begin to engage. Do not start by pushing the board straight down.
- Engage the side before applying vertical pressure. Havwoods warns that forcing a plank vertically before its side is engaged can create gapping, lipping or stored tension. If the side has not seated, stop and reset the board rather than increasing force.
- Use a tapping block on the long edge. Place the tapping block against the long edge as instructed, protecting the finished edge from direct blows. The guide calls for lateral tapping until the joint engages.
- Inspect the connection. Check that the joint is fully engaged and that the surfaces sit evenly before continuing. A visible gap or height difference is a reason to disengage and correct the fit, not to conceal the defect in the next row.
- Repeat with controlled pressure. Continue the same angle-and-lateral-tap sequence for subsequent boards. Keep joints free of debris and use only the force needed for engagement.
This procedure explains the mechanical sequence; it does not establish that the work is a beginner project. A professional installer can assess the substrate, perimeter details, transitions and local requirements that are not determined by the click profile alone.
Floating floors, underlay and substrate questions
The guide’s explicit requirement is that underlay be used for floating installations. It does not mean any underlay is suitable for any model. Confirm the permitted product, thickness and performance requirements in the current instructions for the selected board and project.
The available material does not prove that the click system is suitable for every room or substrate. Before purchase, obtain a written answer on the conditions that apply to your project, including the installation method, substrate type, moisture or environmental limits, transitions and any restrictions on rooms such as bathrooms or other high-exposure areas. If the instructions are silent, treat that as a question to resolve with Havwoods or the installer, not as permission to generalise from another model.

Patterns and applications Havwoods describes
Standard herringbone
The interlocking blocks are intended for the familiar repeated zigzag field. Because the system is marketed without separate right- and left-handed boards, planning can focus on the pattern rather than on maintaining two board inventories.
Diagonal, doubled and brick arrangements
Havwoods says the bevelled blocks can be arranged diagonally, in doubled formations and in brick patterns. These options change the visual rhythm and may change the cutting and perimeter treatment. Verify the selected product’s compatibility before specifying one of these layouts.
Wall cladding
The product announcement also describes wall-cladding use. Flooring and wall applications can have different substrate, fixing, fire and moisture requirements. Treat wall use as a separate application requiring confirmation of the exact product instructions, rather than transferring floor-installation directions automatically.

Havwoods’ product pages offer sample ordering and project advice, subject to current regional availability. Order a physical sample when shade, finish and grade are important: a digital image cannot show the full variation of a timber floor.
An Architecture & Design article from 15 June 2020 said matching straight planks were also available in that context. That historical statement should not be read as a current stock promise. Ask the regional team to confirm whether matching straight boards are presently offered, in the same species, finish, grade and colour as the herringbone model you selected.

Common fitting problems and the appropriate response
A board will not engage
Stop and inspect both profiles for debris. Reposition the male joint at the prescribed angle, then use the tapping block laterally along the long edge. Do not compensate by striking the board vertically.
The joint shows a gap
Disengage and check the angle, the profile and the joint faces. Continuing across a visible gap can carry the error into the pattern. If the board or profile appears damaged, consult the installer or supplier before using it.
The surface is lipped
A height difference can result when the side was not engaged before force was applied. Reset the connection rather than hiding the lip with additional tapping or a neighbouring board.
The floor seems under tension
The guide specifically warns that incorrect vertical forcing can create tension. Remove the affected board according to the model’s instructions and correct the engagement sequence. Persistent movement or tension calls for professional inspection.
Questions to resolve before ordering
- Is the exact model available in your country and in the quantity required?
- What are its stated length, width, total thickness, wear layer, species, grade, finish and construction?
- Is the intended room and substrate approved for that model?
- Which installation method is permitted, and what underlay is required if it is floating?
- Are samples available, and do they represent current stock?
- Are matching straight planks currently available, rather than only described in the 2020 article?
- Does the supplier approve the proposed diagonal, doubled, brick or wall-cladding application?
- Who will install it, and will that installer follow the current product-specific guide?
Havwoods’ interlocking click system can make board handling more straightforward by removing the separate right/left-hand distinction the company describes. The useful way to evaluate it is not as a promise of universal speed, but as a model-specific flooring system whose profile, dimensions, appearance and installation conditions must all be checked before work starts.
